Alright. My work on a solution to finally make screen reader input on Linux somewhat reliable is progressing, the Mutter side seems to work on Wayland, but I must likely find a different place where to hook the code to the X.org Mutter keyboard handling, oh, well...
Thanks for tagging me on this thread. Yeah, he's extracting that part of the work I did for STF earlier this year, and reimplementing the AT side of it in libatspi. As for the bit about X.org, it seems to me that Mutter shouldn't expose this new protocol at all when running in X window manager mode, since libatspi can already get keystrokes directly from the X server.
It definitely does not have to, but I'd rather make things consistent for ATs, ideally, I'd want to move the logic where a double press of a grabbed modifier (mainly caps lock and insert) to the protocol and mandate it in the spec, so Orca can ideally no longer need the capability to inject keyboard events at all (that's a long time in the future, because backward compatibility, I know).
Yeah, I am not sure about that either, so this plan might be only a dream, after all. It would be somewhat ironic if the AT input handling worked better on Wayland, though.
They very definitely do not. mutter on xorg is merely a window manager so it gets a few notifications from X when new top-level windows are created but all input is directly and exclusively between xorg and the recipient x client. there are workarounds using e.g. XI2 raw events ro maybe XRECORD but they won't be 100% complete either.

@Martin from Toronto I'm also using thunderbird. I do have local mail archive since 2007, and I'm self hosting my mail since 2018. In Thunderbird 115 performance for screen reader users has been improved dramatically, now my thunderbird install can handle very very largemailboxes. I was crazy enough to try out some 70000 messages inside single email folder.
In the past weekend, I did (two) walks in Ghent where we used https://mapcomplete.org/surveillance to spot surveillance cameras. The press was interested as well, resulting in some interviews and articles!

Is there one with one drawer, also, do you mind me asking if it's a permanent or temporary stay home for you? Mainly because when people but things like that, it's a bit more planned out, unless someone gives as a gift to you, which my aunt did, so now we have an airfrier, but not in this tiny apartment where four people live. Tiny is only the kitchen, everything else is fine though.
Wow, rent here is a lot of money, and we're generally poor, so, not a lot of people can rent a house without someone else, and even less people can allow themselves to buy an apartment or house, unless they have some leftover inheritance from grandparents and stuff they can sell, or from parents if it's the older generation.
Also, not poor to the point where the internet sucks, but poor enough that I have to think about the money I spent every month and budget, and tell myself that one day, I will get this and that, no matter how much I want something right now at the moment.
Haha I can't afford to rent a house with anyone. LOL. And with the looming thread of the country closing out my parents' jobs, the need for money is going to be a lot, and there'll be a time when I'll be the only one providing for three people, so now I am enjoying and saving up as much as I can.

@quanin although the only time I have seen this not be the case was with the temo microwave. smile. that one wasn't geared to the blind, but still. under 100 for a talking microwave. ok, in the presets, the sizes didn't talk, but still. perfectly usable other wize.
@JamminJerry Yup. That's the one I was left with when May and I split. Thing still runs perfectly nearly a decade later. When that thing eventually goes, it's back to puff paint for me.
@quanin @JamminJerry I miss the microwave at my old house. It has tactile buttons. They're flesh into the microwave, but there are raised outlines around each of them. It also mounts on the wall. I wish I knew what that one was called.
@quanin I still miss the microwave with built in oven under the microwave that I had wasy back in 2014 threw I think 2016 or 2017. it had actual buttons, and a dial that clicked when you turned it. it was very usable.
@JamminJerry The machines in my laundry room don't even have actual buttons anymore. I mean it's still noticeable if you pay attention, but we've gone fancy and overcomplicated I swear.
@quanin nah, you don't need that, just get dots. that is what we did even though one of our microwaves can be used with alexa. we still put dots on it. the microwave that came with the trailer doesn't work with alexa, but we just put dots on it that we baught from amazon.
@JamminJerry Eh, either way. Just give me a dumb microwave that I can use. Like, my kitchen's literally on the other side of the wall I'm facing. It does not need to ping my phone to tell me it's done. The problem with smart this and app that is eventually the people get dumb.

@JamminJerry And see, I don't get that either. You have to physically be in front of the thing to put the food in. We have not yet invented the technology that lets you do otherwise. So if you need to be physically in front of the thing anyway, then just... set the thing right there. Why would you go into the kitchen, put your supper in the oven, then go back to the living room or bedroom or wherever your phone's charging to start it? I mean okay, if you're one of those fitness tracker people who likes counting your steps then sure, you do you. But practically speaking, just... why?
@quanin unless I am completely wrong, and I very well could be, what boggles my mind is the air fryer we have that uses the vsync app, if you set up your cooking stuff in it, you have to hit the start button on the actual device, but if you use alexa, or google to tell it how long to cook, and at what temp, it will starts it. now tell me that makes perfect sense? I don't think so!
@JamminJerry Yeah that's a little sideways, but doesn't surprise me. I mean, I pay for my laundry using an app, which means I need to tell the app which machine I'm using. Once the app charges me, the machine beeps at me to let me know I'm good to go as if I'd paid to do it right at the machine itself. I still need to hit the start button on the physical machine. Like... bro, my phone took my money. My phone told the specific machine it took my money. Why can't my phone just start the physical machine? It already has all the info...
@JamminJerry Sure is. The only reason I'm even bothering with the app is because the machine to load the physical laundry card is a pain in my ass. Otherwise, there's no difference.

Also I think they're still largely too expensive for your mom and pop landlords to get hold of. The brand we're using in this building apparently goes by two names. In Canada they're Coinomatic, in the US they're Wash.

@JamminJerry @tardis I will say other than the requirement to physically reload the laundry card, which I've already done away with, I haven't had a problem with mine. And if they might be a problem, the landlord's usually pretty on top of it. And, like, there's a laundry room on every floor, so I mean, if my floor's out I just cart my clothes upstairs. That's what elevators are for.
@tardis @JamminJerry Nope. With the exception of a couple years where I lived with May, I've been using communal laundry for the 18 years I've been renting. Sure maybe a sock or two goes missing but, like, that would happen regardless. And the app I use will notify me a couple minutes before the cycle finishes, so I mean, if they want to race me to the laundry room they can have it.

well, I suppose here's to hoping bluesky acrually starts getting decentralized, but as it stands it's under control of Jack, and as such will at some point go through enshittification. That's not something I, for one, am happy about.
@malford ah, right. That doesn't invalidate the point that control over bluesky is fundamentally centralized, but I indeed was not aware that Jack stopped being involved.
@mvgorcum I think given that BlueSky runs on a theoretically open protocol I would say that it's not fundamentally centralised, but certainly it is effectively centralised as pretty much every user is on the same server. It was born out of a team at Twitter who were making an open protocol.
@malford the point is that it is not even technically decentralized: there is still a single server under control of the bluesky company that can determine what the whole network does. You can't currently host bluesky yourself without still going through the bluesky servers.
@mvgorcum I see. I know that you can host your own servers on BlueSky, but I don't know anything about how that interacts with BlueSky's own servers etc
@malford specifically the DID (distributed identifiers) and BGS (basically a proxy where all data of the bluesky network goes through) are currently centralized. Whether that will change in the future remains to be seen, but as it stands bluesky is about as centralized as twitter, except with extra steps.

@mvgorcum Jack Dorsey currently has no direct involvement with Bluesky. While he played a key role in founding and funding the platform, he stepped down from its board in 2024. Dorsey is now focused on other ventures, such as the decentralized platform Nostr.
@phonedesigner right, this was mentioned by @malford as well. While apparently true, it does miss the main point of the message, bluesky in its current form is not decentralized, but is still fully controllable by a single entity. Whether that's Jack, Bill Gates, or whoever is currently in control of bluesky, is not really the point.

Another random thing that made me happy tonight: I discovered that at some point #wordweb added a feature to disable linking of words in addon dictionaries. That makes reading definitions with a #screenreader much faster. It's a bit expensive, but if you frequently find yourself resorting to Google, or even worse #AI, to define words for you, it's worth the money and is largely #accessible as well: wordweb.info/#a11y
Great to hear! I used to use WordWeb. I'm trying to remember why I stopped, whether it was an accessibility issue, or I just didn't want to pay for it. Someone was asking about a program which did basically what WordWeb does the other day, so it's good to know it IS accessible in any case.

Putting the issue of what should and should not be taught in schools aside, I challenge the statement that Christianity is not being taught in church. This is nothing more than a hateful statement from atheists or from other non-Christians with no basis in reality and I'm not letting that go unchallenged or unnoticed. Which church? Which pastor? What doctrine has consistently and specifically been taught that contradicts Christian teaching? As a practicing Christian who has attended many different churches for decades, I can say that anyone who makes such a stupid statement doesn't know what he or she is talking about.

Sure, you do. But does your medical clinic do? Does your therapist do? Does your family member typing a personal email to you in Word before sending it do too?
This is a systemic problem.
You cannot protect your own data only by using Linux yourself. You must also demand stronger regulations and enforcement to obligate organizations around to protect your data as well.
