Other times I wonder whether there are deliberate attempts to poison and overwhelm the volunteer-driven, open, accessible, valuable-but-not-profitable Internet.

There is no well-meaning any more. We have monetized bug reports with bug bounties, and then even externalized that with orgs such as Hacker One.
Out there is a bunch of people thinking they can make a living off GenAI writing hacker bounties for them.
