Are there any sounds that just utterly creep you out? For me, the 3DO boot up sequence does. Even though I'm an adult, I imagine hearing it as a child coming out of a big grumpy CRT at about chest-height late at night for some reason, and the sound jumping out of the screen and eating me alive. Spent the last 6 hours trying to get a hello world equivalent gui window with a button on rust under windows.
This task which one might think is simple ended up taking literal hours and still hasn't been achieved because: the tutorials for gtk on windows and rust suggest putting msys2 bin directory on the path. This causes rust to fail to build correctly because it uses the wrong gcc and linkers. Afterwards I managed it by using the appropriate environment variables. But then I found out the dynamically linked libarries weren't found. I tried getting a way to copy them but it turned out to be too much work so I just moved the executable to the same dir. Only to find out that gtk4 has no accessibility on Windows. Not bad accessibility, not accessibility that needs to be turned on. No. Accessibility. At all. So then I decided to try Qt, which wants me to create an account to get an installer. Absolute no. Got the 1.5gb sources and trying now to get an off-line installer out of it.
To get a fucking window with a button in it.
I don't think it's unreasonable for me to say this state of affairs is complete bullshit, and that most people with a normal level of motivation would have found plenty of opportunities to have given up. I still might.
(Not using NWG because tying the data to the GUI elements is non-trivial, it seems to require copying a lot and using twice the memory.)
I gave it a quick look and it seems it has no accessibility support. This means it doesn't exist. I can't exactly use a GUI toolkit if I can't navigate the programs I produce. Thanks for the suggestion.
Alright, I've checked out egui, through eframe, and slint. Both work for some values of work. Unfortunately eframe is quite limited in terms of the widegts it offers, and the direct mode seems a little unsuited to my application idea. Slint fits better, but it's still missing a lot of widegts I need, such as menu bars.
Yes, I was looking at that as well through eframe, but it doesn't seem to support some of the widget types I need. Slint gets closer but is still missing menus.
I thought @matt's work to renovate the Linux accessibility stack was going to result in some level of GTK accessibility on Windows (because of AccessKit), but I haven't heard any updates about the project in a while. And I could also be completely wrong.

I mean, PyQT kind of sucks on the accessibility side in some places, or at least did the last time I tried. WX makes your app look extremely Windows-like if you run them on the Mac, not to mention its abhorrent and unpythonic style.
I wasn't aware of a11y issues with py-qt. Not so fussed about how things look, much less on the mac, for obvious reasons. But, sure, if someone wants to make multiplatform stuff that looks similar it does get more involved.
Oh, Qt has improved, as far as I know. At least I've used some Qt programs that seemed to be alright. Really disappointed that gtk's accessibility is limited to linux though.
it's not just about how things look visually, even if you're using VO, you get yes/no buttons instead of something like "keep"/"delete", very Windows-like shortcuts etc.
You can probably fix this if you go the extra mile, though.
One program I've seen, although I'm not totally sure what Toolkit it was using, used option+f4 to quit instead of command+q. That's what I mean by "apps looking Windows-like."
Ah yeah, functional issues. I never got along with macs is the thing, so I wouldn't really think of producing software for them. Of course if you can let the library deal with it that's great.
Iced has no accessibility. Thanks for the suggestion of Slint, that might work. Unfortunately up to now windows has the best accessibility around, so that makes it imperative for me to keep using it. Hopefully this changes one day.
Mm, from a quick look at eframe it seems it's quite limited about the sort of widgets it supports, but maybe I need to read more docs. Looking for things like listviews, menu bars, etc.
Gtk .18 will have a11y support on Windows thanks to the Accesskit backend, so, just wait a few weeks or compile it from source? Did not try that on Windows yet, though.

@graydon May I recommend FLTK? I can’t say I’ve completely mastered it, but it seemed easier to get a basic GUI working than what you have suffered with.
I'm a bit nervous about the fact it uses an external crate for a11y, so it's not on by default, and it says some widgets have a11y support, so it's not clear if all of them do. Also can one do list views? I haven't seen them on the list of widgets.
PS Still trying to build Qt, got failures due to: lack of ATL, mismatch in architecture, and now some weird openssl link failure.
I've been trying FLTK after running out of other options. I can see why you recommended it, the building situation is so much easier, just cargo add with the bundle feature and it's done.
Unfortunately the accessibility implementation isn't good. I've only given a quick look, but the example provided already doesn't work well. Specifically, the screen reader re-reads every time an input field is changed, so it reads the entire input whenever a new character is entered.
However if one day the accessibility situation improves I will definitely look into it again. It seems much easier to deploy.
If you're a #blind user, you should really consider #Kagi for web search. Especially if you pay for chat GPT pro, you can subscribe to Kagi instead for cheaper and get more features. But even if you don't want AI, the search page is #accessible, fast, and light-weight. And unlike other big tech companies (Microsoft and Google) Kagi still offers a cheaper plan with no AI if you don't want it. Also, because they downrank websites with ads, the more accessible results tend to be at the top. Kagi also lets you block domains from your results. So I got rid of inaccessible stuff like instagram and pinterest, and downranked YouTube, because those results aren't usually #screenreader accessible. While I don't agree with many of the opinions of the @kagihq founder (especially his decision to do business with Yandex for image search), I still feel like using Kagi is more ethical than dealing with Google or Bing, and that these are reasonable differences of opinion that reasonable people can have, not just another clownishly evil tech company. I also find the idea that if you're a paying customer, that somehow guarantees the business will treat you better, really strange. I pay a lot to my ISP and they still treat me like dirt! Kagi will almost certainly sell out at some point. But for the moment, it's where it's at for search: www.kagi.com/
Funny how you just settle into using a product like this. I signed up in December 2023 and have been a happy customer since then, but that's probably also around the last time I looked at the preferences pages. I should really set up some prioritisation rules too.
@jscholes@kagihq You can also do it by pressing the domain info link beside a search result that you don't like. Just select the block radio button and hit escape to close the dialogue. The only real issue is that answers from the assistant aren't read out automatically in real time as they come in. I did this a few months ago and have been very happy. I pay $5 per month and have yet to run out of searches, even running it on my computer and phone.
@alexhall I did the $25 a month plan because I was previously paying for Chat GPT, so why not cancel that and have everything on one bill. Plus Kagi gives GPT4o, as well as a ton of other models for when OpenAI starts censoring too hard.
That makes sense. I use the free ChatGPT site, mostly for the odd coding problem. I haven't yet found a use case in my life that would make it worth paying for.
@alexhall I use it for pulling data out of graphs or CSV files and answering questions about it. At least on Windows, there's still no good sonification tools for random online graphs. But AI does good enough if you just give it an image. And when it goes wrong, at least for graphs, it's usually completely obvious.

Most clients are on an earlier version of the XEP (0.3.x).

Because my brain likes to supply me with junk that I haven't heard in years... I was just sitting at the kitchen table having some pizza, when this sequence from a NES game popped into my head. Problem is, I don't know what game it's from, and I haven't heard it since probably 1991 or so, but I sequenced it as close to what my brain remembers. Has to be confusing when it leaks into TV and such, though. E.G. I watched a BBC documentary on the history of electricity, and half the electrical noises in there were obviously from a 120 Hz base! Because hollywood sound libraries contaminated the space. And then some of them were 50 Hz based too, just to make it more confusing.
