This Linux "what session owns what process" crap is, I swear, its biggest downfall. Oh, lightDM now owns your pipewire server socket because it started it first? Oh! No Orca for you then, sorry, it can't be started on a Bluetooth device, because then that Pipewire session grabbed the BlueZ service and poof it's now the one connecting to your headphones and its audio socket. Fuck Linux. Fuck it with a big, giant, wide, sharp cactus today.

Volvo (and Polestar) are in crisis mode as their flagship cars are plagued by software problems.

It’s said that car companies don’t “understand” software, but the larger issue is that they don’t *appreciate* software.

I mean, they don’t understand leather tanning or high-end speaker design either, but that doesn’t stop them from sourcing premium materials and great sound systems. But software is always bought from the lowest bidder (Infosys in the Volvo/Polestar case)

Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge?

It’s not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.

Well, that was a "productive" Saturday evening! I needed to combine some smart home data and made a mistake by asking the #AI to suggest some approaches. After two hours of going down blind alleys and being misled by the AI with things like old or completely made-up API endpoints, I finally studied the documentation and realised it was not the right path. I then did some old-school thinking and searching, found an open-source library on GitHub that did exactly what I needed, and solved the problem in 20 minutes.

Open source vs AI: 1–0

Business news are crazy today (well, as usual)…

Anthropic has settled its lawsuit with authors for 1.5B$. Which is 50% of their actual annual revenues (although the amount still have to be validated by a juge, and might be higher).

It’s 3000$ per book they stole, and represent only a fraction of of the number of books they stole.

That they are ready to pay this amount of money tells a lot.

Imagine if before every journey you had to give 48 hours notice to do it. That's the reality for disabled people across many countries. Wanna take a train? Gotta book the assistance 24-48 hours in advance. Relative gone into hospital and you need to go see them? Tough, should have planned in advance.

This is why I am so vocal about level access trains and working lifts. If we design accessibility into our infrastructure, it becomes more useful to more people.

Where Europe is dumping its problematic waste
correctiv.org/en/europe/2025/0…

Europe reveals that waste disposal companies from Germany, Austria and Italy continue to export old tyres and other waste – in some cases toxic – to the Czech Republic.

Over the past two decades, millions of tonnes of waste have been dumped in Mydlovary – including significant volumes from neighbouring Germany, a country championed for its waste separation and recycling systems. According to the managing director of one German waste disposal company, Mydlovary is ‘the biggest hole in Europe’ for rubbish dumping.

Excited to announce #Catima is in the top 5% of most popular apps on #IzzyOnDroid, ranking place 62 of 1307.

Even more excited to see our new IzzyOnDroid download statistics, supported by #NLNet, land in #NeoStore!

Curious as to how it works? It's actually pretty simple! Server logs are fed, per server, into codeberg.org/IzzyOnDroid/iod-s… and the results are summarized using codeberg.org/IzzyOnDroid/iod-s…, creating easy to consume JSON files. Then, Neo Store consumes them :)

We have a list of user agents of known clients on codeberg.org/IzzyOnDroid/iod-s…, so it's anything not matching those. Mostly web browsers, but may also include some crawlers or bots.

Ukraine’s first EU-gauge railway between Uzhhorod and Chop is now open, backed by €28.6 million from the EU’s Connecting Europe and Ukraine Facilities.

This means:

✅ Faster border crossing
✅ More trade
✅ Better links to 🇸🇰🇭🇺🇦🇹 – and beyond

Part of the EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes, this project will help bring Ukraine closer to the EU.

Anyone from Microsoft following me?

I’m going to leave GitHub (I’ve been a user since the beta days) and will incessantly ask everyone I know to leave it as well if you don’t roll back the “can’t opt out” force-feeding of “AI” nonsense.

You should also have no integration or collaboration with Xai at all, ever.

Make your management have some sense, this is hostile and disgusting and wrong.

For the first time since September of 2019, FX Radio lives again!

What is FX Radio?

Basically, it's a stream with a stack of three media players shuffling through a huge collection of royalty free sound effects, music, and sometimes other odd things.

Essentially, it's audible streaming chaos, and a possible drug substitution if you are so inclined.

There are still some things to be tweaked, so it may randomly disappear from time to time, but we here at NoiseBox HQ are mostly happy with how it's working so far, streaming live from a computer under @BorrisInABox's mom's desk, and she has no idea it's there.

More features will be added in the coming days, hopefully.

There is no website or anything fun like that, just a stream URL.

What I Wish Someone Told Me When I Was Getting Into ARIA

Today's #AndroidAppRain at the #IzzyOnDroid repo will come with a special: Neo Store updated to v1.1.2, and now does provide our download statistics inline (see attached images) 🥳

You cannot only see how well your favorite apps perform, but also sort your listings by "popularity" (actually, download counts). And also which F-Droid client is favored by those using a given app.

Currently only available for apps provided via the IzzyOnDroid repo – until other repos pick up the stats generator.

@kuroneko I guess the best place for that would be codeberg.org/IzzyOnDroid/iod-s… – it's definitely doable. Maybe you open an issue there to ask for it, so your question does not get lost? We'd then see what can be done.

Thanks, also for the suggestion – it's a good idea!

An article I read years ago about the "gig economy" lives rent free in my head. Its core thesis amounted to - in many companies particularly through the 20th century, it was at least possible for someone to come in at even a low entry level job and through hard work and effort and excellence, get promotion after promotion and make their way to senior management. You could get from factory worker to become foreman to become manager to become senior manager etc.

When you're an "independent contractor" with a megacorp as a monopsony over you, and your boss is an app, there's literally zero path from labor to management no matter how good you are.

And now with AI, that trend has entered a new stage. There's going to be that much fewer pathways from entry level AI wrangler to supervisor.

How good is AI.

IKEA order arrived with a damaged box. The return AI booked a replacement drop off and pickup scheduled for Friday. All good zero touch customer rep experience. Status updates telling us it’s on the way etc.

Except it never arrived.

Called IKEA this morning took 45m of waiting and dealing with humans to discover. The AI had hallucinated the whole thing. The schedule was too tight For the warehouse to load the goods. So the AI just faked the rest of the delivery updates.

Cust rep couldn’t fix it so just created two new deliveries, one for the replacement and one for the damaged part pickup.
So much time wasted and inconvenience to our family.

Grr.
