I upgraded an app from using #Gradle 8.13 to version 9.2.1. Not because I wanted to, I dread upgrading Gradle, but because I needed it to work with Java 25.
Predictably, my build definition (`build.gradle.kts`) broke, with some deprecated APIs being removed. This isn't some coincidence, Gradle's APIs get deprecated all the time, nothing's safe.
I don't think I have ever upgraded Gradle without noticing source compatibility breakage. I can't think of any other API I've used that's worse.

It was very popular in Europe back in 60's, 70's and even 80's. When people were somewhere far from their homes at vacations, then they used it pretty often. The post office where I used to use it, still have this service up and running.

@CedC Vous avez du mal à comprendre justement parce que vous ne comprenez pas une chose très simple : l'accessibilité d'une solution est *égale* à son utilisabilité. encore plus simple : si un système d'exploitation ou un logiciel n'est pas accessible, c'est comme si je vous prive de votre écran et de votre souris et demande d'utiliser votre ordi. C'est la même chose. si ça ne parle pas, si c'est pas accessible, ça signifie que moi en tant qu'aveugle ne peux pas l'utiliser. C'est pas une question du « confort » ou « s'habituer un peu » comme pour vous les voyants en passant de Windows à Linux, c'est pas la même chose ! Je ne sais pas comment l'expliquer encore plus simplement. donc si vous migrez « avant », on est foutu tout de suite, je veux dire, les non-et malvoyants. Au moment même.

@inso Je suis complétement aveugle. Ça veut dire, évidemment, que je ne vois rien du tout. Il existe des logiciels spéciaux qui s'appellent lecteurs d'écran. Ils s'appuient sur des moyens (APIs, interfaces) exposés par le système d'exploitation pour transformer le contenu visuel en parole et/ou Braille. Donc, quand vous voyez par exemple un bouton avec une icône engrenage, je dois apprendre, d'abord, que c'est un élément du type « bouton », et puis à quoi il sert, donc il me faut quelque part une représentation textuelle (« Paramètres », par exemple). donc, vous voyez un petit rectangle avec une icône engrenage, et moi j'entends « Paramètres bouton ». En gros, c'est ça l'accessibilité. Quand on parle de Linux, exactement, y a trop de distros, trop d'environnements de bureau et… affreusement peu de développeurs de lecteurs d'écran. En fait, il y a Madame Joanmarie Diggs (que j'estime profondément) qui est de facto la seule à développer Orca, le seul et unique lecteur d'écran pour Linux. et j'ai même pas commencé à parler des APIs manquantes, de l'accessibilité de chaque logiciel de la suite de bureau aux navigateurs, baladeurs média, processeurs de texte etc., etc., etc. Peut-être me faut-il écrire un gros article en français pour que tout le monde le comprenne.

À comparer, le lecteur d'écran le plus vieux sur Windows, JAWS for Windows, à fêté son trentième anniversaire cette année et il y a une grosse équipe qui le développe. En plus, il y a ce qu'a été appelé d'une façon magnifique par un podcasteur, splendeurs et misères de l'open-source. Ça veut dire que, dans la plupart des cas, beaucoup de choses des APIs à la documentation sont fragmentées, et quand on vient chez l'auteur et dit « Écoute, frère/sœur, je suis aveugle, c'est pas accessible, tu peux stp le réparer ? Stp stp ? » Et il ou elle vous dit : « Bah tu sais, je comprends ton problème, mais j'ai pas de temps, plus j'm'y connais en fait rien en accessibilité. Mais c'est open-source, tu peux le réparer toi-même, je vais accepter ton pull-request ! » et moi, c'est mon boulot, j'en gagne mon pain et en plus faut payer le loyer. Et je peux pas cloner moi-même pour faire plusieurs choses en même temps. Donc qu'est-ce que je fais ? J'allume ma machine Windows où je *peux* travailler. Dis-je que Linux est mauvais ? Loin, loin de ça ! C'est un système excellent pour serveurs, où il faut la stabilité et longévité des processus du fond ( « dæmons »). Mais pour le bureau… On n'est pas là.
Juste pour rassurer parce que j'y participe un peu et je pense qu'on est nombreux à faire le même constat : l'accessibilité des outils informatiques est un problème majeur. Et nous sommes aussi nombreux à vouloir que ça avance dans la bonne direction.
Les projets de passage sous Linux pour les écoles se font surtout avec la distribution Primtux. Je n'ai vu aucun projet se faire de force et sur tout le parc informatique sans adaptation. Ce n'est pas la feuille de route de @lelibreedu
@lelibreedu #Primtux est une distribution qui embarque un grand nombre d'outils en terme d'accessibilité pour les élèves de primaire et je vois de plus en plus d'enseignants se saisir de cette question. De même certaines communes reprennent en main une gestion plus fine des équipements informatiques en prenant en compte les besoins du terrain au lieu d'imposer du matériel homogène. Il n'est en aucun cas question d'imposer un ordinateur sous linux pour des élèves non et malvoyants

Год назад пересеклись со знакомым, у него на работе начальство обязало пересадить всех на Линукс (кроме себя естественно). Он, будучи админом, да и пользователи были просто офигеть счастливы. Когда половины нужного софта нет, а другая половина кривая как фиг знает что. Не знаю чем дело закончилось, но он оттягивал момент тотального пересаживания с Винды насколько возможно.

Антиамериканские настроения это модно. Вон в Канаде находятся деятели кто игнорируют американскую продукцию и сервисы, переходя на свои что по качеству хуже, особо одарённые snowbirds не едут в отпуск в южные штаты. Ну а чё, по телевизеру сказали "это хорошо, это так и надо".
А суды, фиг знает. Если найдутся заинтересованные и готовые пройти через всё, то да. Правда я не очень представляю о чём этот закон вообще и кому в случае чего можно кидать предъявы. Читать надо. Если разработчикам софта, у которого с доступностью полный здецпи и нарушено то то и это, тогда хорошо, особенно коллективный иск какой-нибудь, а лучше больше чем один. Может в таком случае будет какой-то прогресс.
Well, now I've bit the bullet and used Substack's editor for something, and it wasn't really as bad of an experience as I was making it out to be. I'll still write my initial draft outside of the editor, but I can paste it in to their control, and, where I need to make a link, I can select the relevant text, press ctrl-k, type in the URL, and I'm done. I'd still prefer to be able to write everything in markdown and directly import it somehow, but this will do I think.

Thanks for this. Louder than an Orbit makes it a deal-breaker for me, since I use braille and speech simultaneously much of the time during work. I like the fast refresh. I like everything about it, actually, at least from what I've read and what you said, but that loud refresh noise is a problem. Not that I can afford one either way.
Can you use TW Recorder, turn off iOS Processing, put the mic at ear-level, and record the refreshing again? Because that was super loud, but I imagine the mic was a couple inches away from the display.
Um, that's...the pins? Holy crap, this makes the orbit reader seem like a perfect display for silent reading time in a classroom. I imagine the mic on the braille sense didn't do it any justice, especially towards the beginning the refreshing created clipping artifacts like sharp sounds used to do on iPhone microphones, but it got the idea across, and sheesh.
@TheQuinbox ahaaha. I might do a short one with my iPhone's. and at a distance. I found out this thing uses magnets. So it's kind of like a VersaSlate stylus in that way, makes sense the refresh noise too. Now I know where it sounded familiar, of course. It's like an electronic VersaSlate
@johann same price as dotPadX, around 5400. Although on DotPad you get a 20-cell display along with an area that shows graphics separately. On this one it's combined but: Unlike Monarch, there's no gap from one line to the next, so if dots 7 and 8 (like underlining) is used, the lines will squish into each other. Monarch keeps line spacing the same as well as cell spacing like regular Braille.
for some reason when I hear that sound of the braille refreshing, I'm thinking if you were at a press conference, that sound would blend in with other sounds like cameras and such. lol

@JonathanMosen It definitely is. I was privileged to lay my hands on a proto type when it was still in development. I'm a friend of the Help Tech company, and supported them during the 2022 SightCity virtual conference. And I saw it at an exhibition or two recently, and now have my own Activator here. It must be the most beautiful display they've built so far. Although I was a huge fan of the BookWorm back in the late 90s, too. I know that 8 Braille cells are too few for many, but this little Braille reading device saved me and my sanity on hundreds of commutes to my computer science school back in the day. Remember, this was before even the Nokia smartphone era.

I thought they were two separate means to similar ends. Can't see how to get from mapcomplete to the 'Bench' quest that has screenshots of Maproulette's web application. Would love to link some of the nearby benches, but can't quite work out how to get it.
They arrived. the new multiline displays. Cadence tablets. Really interesting, and I love the cells are made of metal. Refresh is somewhat loud. Only 4 keys on top surface of device. I think they could use the outer thumb keys as dots 3 and6 though, if they really wanted to. As long as it is pressed together with another key, then quick double-press to enter just dot3 or dot6 alone. Trust me it is a viable way to type on one single unit. But the units are meant to fit together. Each has an opposing ril, that docks in. There are rails on the top and side of the device, so they fit together and slide-click into place. Fascinating. Thus, each display is mirror-flipped from the other, but you have flexibility in how to orient it: Side-by-side (as one long 24-cell-by-4 line) or up-down (as an 8-line by 12-cell display.) Either way you do it, it's going to have a seam and small gap where the two come together. Some might find this a bit annoying when reading content as it won't perfectly flow together, the middle of the line will always have a noticeable gap as words get placed on the next display, or a larger gap between two lines if you choose the top-orientation for docking them. Interesting indeed.
I'm curious ...these report as a braille display to screen readers, but how would you place (moving) images onto them in that case? Is that only something the internal software allows for or can I tell , say, Windows, to see it as a screen and just show a grahpical representation that way?
@twynn @zersiax The lines themselves don't have a break in it, like a gap that is with the cells, and they show random graphics when you wait after the pairing screen and nothing pairs. very interesting and odd. But iOS itself, no Graphics with VoiceOver. I wonder if it normally does.
@twynn @zersiax hmm, can we find the manual? It really threw me off when it displayed these random symbols that were not Braille but felt like Braille just longer LOL. Then I realized I waited too long at pairing screen and it does that weird thing. I've heard of Monarch users feeling the icons on their iPhone screen though and I'm not sure if that was VoiceOver printing the icons or through another method of connecting it to the iPhone screen itself. Hmm.
@twynn the website talks a lot about being able to see graphics and even animated graphics, being able to play videogames for example, but I feel those might be capabilities that might one day exist, not so much something that is possible now. Unless there's some kind of internal thing that does that ... maybe there's like a braille Snake or something
Cool! The braille community finally has our own version of the crease in a folding phone. Some won't notice, some will notice but consider the annoyance worth it, and some will hate it. Does slotting them together automatically tell the screen reader how many lines and cells there are, or do you have to configure that somehow?
