TL:DR Mat is a corporate slave, is really tired, and is getting fucked over

Now I don't need to tell you all capitalism is shit but it's wearing me down right now. A whole year with no more than 6 days in a row off, I'm set for 2 full weeks holiday over Christmas, starting last Friday.

Yeah, so some fucker makes comments in a meeting with the fucking CEO of the company, trying to deflect from a shit job they did, risking tens of millions of dollars, and put it on me and my team because I wasn't there to defend us, despite us being the only group to actually do a good job and not fuck up.

So yeah, worked the first 3 days of my Christmas "holiday", including a conference call in the middle of a family celebration meal. Tomorrow I have to find a quiet place for a call with the CEO and all the global Executive leadership to defend my team, who have done an amazing job cleaning up other people's shit, during a day out with friends visiting an exhibition, having a meal and going to football match.

This was my reward for the year, some carefree time, and it's just been laced with anxiety and, frankly, unpaid labour.

Apologies, I'm ranting.

Please don't reply with "fuck them, don't do it" or, "get a different job man" or whatever. It's really not that simple. I've been in this game 25 years but the timing is particularly bad this time.

Need help asap.
So my NVDA doesn't wanna speak other than in login or user control dialogs. Reinstalls didn't help, and of course restarts arn't the magical quick fix. :p. At the same time, wifi doesn't appear to work. Sometimes it barely works, and I thought it was a tailscale issue, but that doesn't seem to be the case now. It only worked the first time when quitting processes. I should point out that it's a pc issue, not an internet itself issue as it works just as it should anywhere else, for example, this work laptop I'm posting on now.
What kinda messed up conbination is this?
The wifi thing started yesterday in the morning, by the way. Only today nvda thought it wanted to just quit working.

I wasn't aware of @Tutanota 's contact synch fonctionnality on Android. Since i had #tutanotamail on my old phone that I have lost, today I installed #tutamail on my current phone to find out that I had unexpectedly recovered all my old contacts that I thought was lost forever.
I'm happy about it. That unknown feature gave me a new life today.
I want you to know that. Thank you for the job!

Question for the Mastodon hive mind:
Primer:
I have a need to convert, resize, reorient, and transcode video for various stages of our video edit and distribution pipeline. I've been doing all of this in ffMpeg, via command line arguments and custom-coded scripts. However, the needs of this thing just simply don't scale that way. And no one but me gets access to the CLI on these systems. So that's just not feseable.
Now finally, to the question.
I am looking for an open-source web frontend to ffMpeg that is, if not fully accessible, as that is a very tall order, but at least usable by an experienced screen reader user with the typical tools and hacks learned over twenty years of experience. Just something that doesn't make accessibility a barrier and most importantly, a time waster.
Please boost far and wide for reach, with thanks.

Ready! Set! Fire!

My apologies folks, there will be no archive on YouTube for this stream, as it was full of gremlins, and not the fun kinds. I didn't even know until I checked the video archive. Unfortunately there will be one in game day off screen, and I'm going to have to do some tinkering with OBS to figure out what it's major malfunction is this time. Thanks for your patience everyone, and I hope so much to be up and running again soon.

RE: social.anoxinon.de/@codebergst…

Having received some of this spam it is interesting to see the type of language used:

"what's the point of using [...] if it can't be trusted"
"I expected better"
"This is very frustrating!"
"it's entirely unacceptable"
"Not addressing this is just pointless and leads to wasted time for users like me."

Makes you wonder: is abusive behaviour in project issues so common in LLM training data or did they explicitly ask to be so mean?

Food for thought, but no matter what this is quite sad stuff...

in reply to Sylvia

"user activity"? The ones I've checked (I've reported a few of them) had their activity tab explicitly disabled (I guess to rob you of the possibility to check their other issues, and see they all follow the same 3-paragraph-pattern: wrong assumption by the repo name, constructed problem with some terms gathered from the content, blaming the dev to be totally incompetent). User created maybe 2 weeks ago. @odd

Vanadium version 143.0.7499.146.0 released

Changes in version 143.0.7499.146.0:

  • update to Chromium 143.0.7499.146

A full list of changes from the previous release (version 143.0.7499.109.0) is available through the Git commit log between the releases.

This update is available to GrapheneOS users via our app repository and will also be bundled into the next OS release. Vanadium isn't yet officially available for users outside GrapheneOS, although we plan to do that eventually. It won't be able to provide the WebView outside GrapheneOS and will have missing hardening and other features.

So RedditForBlind seems to have a broken API key, and with that one of the easiest ways to browse Windows has been taken down until the dev who has largely abandoned the project does something. Gotta love losing nicely packed and accessible ways of doing something that just vanish. But on the positive, I have more free time now.

I don't know what you mean by loopholes, but, I am thinking on it now. I already downloaded it, before I realised it's for windows. LOL. There would need to be additional things added to it, like apple's broken speech API, unless accessible output solves that, but I don't think so, or maybe it does, but it'd be fun on mac. Not sure how to compile it, but if you want, we can try. I am not a bad tardis, I follow instructions. Grins. Haha.

We’ve got two specials for our regular listeners coming up. On the 23rd December we spend the hour with Mr F, the boss man of our radio network. And on the 24th we meet the mysterious voice behind our emails, and learn about her part in bringing Harry Potter to life for Audible listeners. Stay tuned for that and one more rant from Steven before the year is out. Happy holidays!!

I enjoyed your interview with Sharmin Co, and I love to highlight other people that are doing a great work in training people using mac.
the folks at IBug has done mac and iOS voiceover training for free since the pandemic. they have many free content over at ibugtoday.org/
The late John Panarese Mac For The Blind have done paid Mac custom and purchasable training modules for mac with voiceover,

TalkBack does not offer an option to use computer vision & LLMs (“AI” for the scope of this thread) to describe images lacking alt text.

If you do it in Chrome, it overwrites all the good alt text with, well, crap.

Try it on this page:
srt.csb-cde.ca.gov/jaws/jaws-l…

See how the authored alt text has been replaced by the file name?

Reloading the page does not reset it to the original alt text (nor loading in incognito nor appending query strings).
