If I were a digital rights activist, I would see this time as a golden opportunity.
#Grok, the #AI "assistant" powered by Musk's xAI, has become an engine of non-consensual image and video generation at a mass scale - including pornographic and pedopornographic content. Creating and distributing this imagery has never been quicker or easier. All one has to do is reply to an image posted by someone on X with a mention of Grok and a prompt. This feature was restrained recently but people who pay an $8 subscription to X can still do it. As Sam Cole writes on @404mediaco : "Masterful Gambit: Musk Attempts to Monetize Grok's Wave of Sexual Abuse Imagery" 404media.co/x-premium-grok-pay…
How many politicians pushing for #ChatControl are still using X? How many official government accounts? You know, the same people who screamed WE NEED TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN and pushed for the scanning of all digital communications and files (including E2EE encrypted ones) of European citizens? An "Orwellian nightmare" as @Em0nM4stodon wrote on Privacy Guides: privacyguides.org/articles/202…
In the Privacy Guides article by Em, the French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Irish governments (amongst many others) were in full support of Chat Control. As far as I can tell, prominent politicians, Prime Ministers and official government accounts from these countries are still posting on X.
Is there anything we can do to point out the hypocrisy? Or have the abuse machine that is Grok sanctioned and fined? And - this is key - use this horrible incident to push politicians to FINALLY quit X? It's about time.
#StopChatControl #LeaveX #QuitX #SaveSocial
In an attempt to push more people toward a paying subscription, Grok now refuses to generate images in replies. The paywall is pretty leaky, though.Samantha Cole (404 Media)

I've been having silly amounts of fun using this text through the various voices.

Starting Monday with a morning exercise in the fresh air at 15 degrees below zero. Let's get some solar power. The heat pump needs it.
I'm not fucking around anymore. If you're actively trying to make shit harder for me, I am going to let you know.
@bagder Is it double messaging when this is explicitly in every single release announcement?
> Just like the previous experimental releases, this is a timed release. It is a snapshot of what we currently have and is something we think other tinkerers and developers may want to start playing with, but again, it is not meant for end users.
@bagder To have goals which can drive development, for me to get a dopamine hit after being in 10 straight years of development hell, because it gives me a chance to look back and reflect on what we've been doing and determine if that's the correct path.
Are these good enough reasons for you?
@bagder Guess I should turn this into an FAQ somewhere which will be yet another thing on my todo list which will of course cut into development time...
Anyways here's the original announcement that described the whole thing.
But tl;dr we're open to feedback if it is actually usable/reasonable right now.
But between live and work finding time for Pidgin is hard and people are making it harder by forcing me through conversations like this.

Greetings Programs! This post was supposed to be made awhile back but I got busy and kept forgetting to write it. Anyways, we are officially announcing that we will be releasing the first experimental release of Pidgin 3 on December 31st, 2024.Instant Messaging Freedom's Discourse
@bagder Wow I love how people just love to suggest that I can't decide on my own autonomy. Which was kind of the point of the initial tweet...
FWIW I have been actively working on a pull request during this entire discussion.
There is something wrong with Trump.
At a meeting with oil industry CEO’s he suddenly interrupts his introductory remarks, gets up and looks out the window and starts talking about his ballroom. Trump then realizes his mistake and says “unusual time to look”, and sits back down to continue.
How many oil companies will invest in a Venezuelan oil project initiated by a man who loses track of the situation he is in?

Are you guys seeing this annoying GitHub bug on iOS where scrolling on some pages keeps forcing your browser to keep bouncing / scrolling back to top before you can get very far?
This is an example, one other person has reproduced it

Good morning from Gaza,
Despite the pain and the siege, we still believe that truth never dies and that the dawn of freedom will come, no matter how long the night lasts.
Our voices, our prayers, and our resilience are stronger than all injustice.
A morning of hope for Palestine and for everyone who stands for justice.

I have a lot to say about this weekend's big GNOME controversy.
So, I'm curious.
What is particularly special about #forkiverse, compared to other instances?
Is the hashtag being used just to promote the existence of a new instance?
Cool that more people are joining the fediverse. I'm just a bit confused, is all.

I have not updated my main Mac to the new OS. I have updated my laptop, and regret it. I am concerned about security updates but I believe Apple provides security updates for not-too-old versions.
This UI, though, I just do not feel comfortable with it. I am hoping I can skip this major version and that the next one will be more in line with Apple's historical attention to getting UIs right.
Please don't respond with discussion about the UI, but: please do respond if I am making a security mistake by holding off on the update.

I just had an interesting thing happen.
I have an old (needs-to-be-retired) Linux distro for amateur radio stuff, called HamVoIP, which is running a quite old Archlinux.

This system has Tailscale installed, and is using a node on my Tailnet to route both incoming and outgoing traffic.
This ISP is using CG-NAT, and I want to direct traffic from the internet to an Asterisk PBX, so I have a Tailscale exit node appropriately configured for this purpose.
The registration IP address must match, so outgoing traffic is also sent through that system.
It's been fine for a while, but just this afternoon, this system could no longer access the internet. LAN and tailnet resources were fully accessible, including the exit node itself, but nothing would pass through, until I disabled the use of that exit node and enabled it again.
Have you tried turning it off and back on again?
Anyway, it's working now, but I really should make this system go away in favor of it's more modern 64-bit replacement. It's definitely easier to deal with. Just getting Tailscale to use an exit node in the first place was made more complicated by the old implementation of netfilter.
Canada purports to be a pluralistic country. It recognizes many ideas, many traditions, many communities are valid and worthwhile, and the country can and should do the work to know and understand as many as possible.
X is the antithesis of pluralism. X games anger outrage ignorance and prejudice for gain. The algorithm pushes these idea far beyond the real value of these ideas.
Only the pathetically naive and willfully ignorant don't see this.
Misinformation and its manipulation and the outsized harm and impact is today's political reality.
Solomon is feigning outrage with the naive confidence that his party's own misinformation gains through X, is still worthy and justified, that it will compete with the anger and outrage capable of supporting the killing of an innocent woman.
Supporting X is supporting anger, ignorance fear and prejudice, not very Canadian, or its it?
