@Steve Sawczyn Most likelly I'm saying the same, I just would like to make sure we all get it right. The federated timeline of an instance consists of all the public posts retrieved from timelines of individual users having account on that instance. For example we both are on instance1.social, I'm following user from instance2.social, you are following another user from instance3.social. Anyone looking at the instance1 federated timeline will see their public posts

I was thinking about the "Baseline" scene from Blade Runner 2049 the other day and idly tried to search for a transcript of it, and immediately fell down a rabbit hole learning

1. The script for that scene was written by Ryan Gosling
2. The test itself is fundamentally based on an actor's exercise Ryan Gosling had been trained in invented by a Massachusetts Shakespeare company

I wrote a blog post on Cohost about "Dropping In" and the ins and outs of how this happened:

#Friendica Server: No access in /tmp warnings

@Friendica Support :
Reviewing the local syslog there are thounds of messages from friendica that read:

Nov 4 13:45:04 localhost Friendica[237585]: worker [WARNING]: Path is not writable {"directory":"/tmp/friendica.mbbit.de","user":"friendica"} - {"file":"System.php","line":556,"function":"isDirectoryUsable","uid":"7d351a"}

Confirmed that the folder

/tmp/friendica.mbbit.de

is owned by www-data:www-data. Seems that PHP tries to acces the files with user "friendica" any idea how to fix that?

BTW: At the moment it does seem to have any negative effect on the site at all.

Offline mode has come to iOS! 🤩🥳 Now you can access your encrypted emails, calendars and contacts wherever you are - even without an internet connection!

Just heard from the Social Services and Community Select Committee. I’ll be giving an oral submission on the deeply flawed #Accessibility for New Zealanders bill on Wednesday. Submissions close on Monday, so there’s still time to submit if you have an interest. My submission is here. mosen.org/accessibilitybillsub…

I thought I would follow @aral's example and finally get around to deleting my two twitter accounts that have both been unused for over a year.

I deactivate the first one and get a stupid email telling me that I have turned off two-factor authentication. (But it does appear to be deactivated).

I try to deactivate the second one but am told that twitter has suspended my account (who knows why) and won't let me delete it. 😞

Imagine being able to travel anywhere in your country, using public transportation for just £1.40/day

That's what Germany is doing as of next year.

Germany introduces unlimited train travel for £1.40 a day
The digital Deutschlandticket, price €49/month

in reply to Frank I Am

this does seem like a nice deal, but with modern e-ticket systems I think it's even better to follow an "auto-pass" or "cost limit" model, where no prepayment is needed and instead it just charges you per journey until you reach the cap, and then any further usage is free until the next month.

Of course that does mean you don't get the revenue from folks who overestimated their travel needs, but public transport should be optimized for lowest possible friction and ease of use.

OCRbot is far from perfect, and should not be relied on as the sole method of captioning images. It's much better and more reliable to caption images yourself, if at all possible. If it's too long to fit in the description field, consider posting it in a reply (or multiple replies).

Here is a list of caveats and other flaws to be aware of when using OCRbot: github.com/Lynnesbian/OCRbot/b…

You may be aware that there is something called the #Fediverse.

But do you know about all the different types of applications that run on the Fediverse?

I made this visual to give myself and others something to point at when explaining "the big picture".

You may be surprised by how many services beyond Mastodon there are to explore.

Download it for free here and use as you please:

That post also has links to all the different applications.

I have version 1.1 of "The many branches of the Fediverse" ready for you. 😄

Thank you to everyone who pitched in with suggestions of improvement (all visible in the thread).

You can download PNG and PDF versions on my blog post, which also has a bit more info and links to the applications.

Download for free and use as you please. Preferably to spread the word about the benefits of federated publishing and local instances. 😊

It's Friday and version 1.2 of "The many branches of the Fediverse" is published. Thanks everyone for your interest and engagement.

There is a changelog at the bottom of the post with more info, and you are welcome to download hi-res PNG and PDF versions of the diagram.

Do feel free to use this visual in any way you like, in your presentations, publish in your own spaces, etceteras. I'm just glad if you find it useful.

Verification on the fediverse basically means proving that you own/control your web site.

For you, that should mean adding this snippet of code to kathygriffin.com:

<a rel="me" href="mstdn.social/@kathygriffin">Mastodon</a>

(You can find that info in the edit profile screen. I believe it should be at mstdn.social/settings/profile for you.)

We added a new option in #PureBoot called Restricted Boot that only boots self-signed kernels and distro-signed ISOs. I talk about how we approached this feature at length in this blog post: puri.sm/posts/introducing-pure… #firmware #security #coreboot #heads

Hello world! 👋😀
I've just been lurking for a few days since I've joined here. I definitely needed a bit of time to get used to Mastodon and the basic functionalities. 😅 However, I think I should finally introduce myself: I'm Eva, a hobbyist artist from Germany, mostly focused on photography (example below), plus various artisan crafts like crocheting, felting and leatherwork. I'm looking forward to seeing all your creative works and connecting with you! 😊 #art #photography #sunset #Seaside

Thank you, TEDx for viewing #accessibility as an important topic and for making it an Editor’s Pick. Thank you Shannah Hayley and TEDxPlano for the opportunity! Thanks to Thomas Logan, Makoto Ueki, and Ashley Coffey for making the talk possible

The difference between a closed, algorithmically-curated silo like Twitter and the fediverse.

Same post.

Twitter: ~43K “followers”, 8 boosts, 58 likes
Fediverse: ~8.43K followers, 57 boosts, 106 likes

Your thousands of “followers” on Twitter mean nothing because the algorithm (i.e., Twitter, Inc.) decides who gets to hear you.
