Did you know you could use Mastodon as a comment platforms on your blog? I blogged about this 2 years ago carlschwan.eu/2020/12/29/addin… but since there has been a lot of newcomers recently, it might be a good idea to share it again 😜

The lead attorney for GitHub arguing that #Copilot using #OpenSource is fair use following precedent from #Oracle Vs #Google is the woman who represented Oracle and personally argued against the verdict in public on Twitter.

Forgive me for sharing this via our company account, but this is a subject I am passionate about and is very important to us.

For some time now, it has become more difficult to link a Humanware Victor Reader Stream product with the Audible book service via its Audible Sync application.
This means that it is not possible for those people to use the Stream with the Audible book service.

Audible is one of the primary methods these days for listening to audio books and this is undoubtedly the device on which many people choose to hear them.

As a company, we often recommend that people use the Victor Reader Stream. As of this moment, anyone who wishes to link such a device to Audible cannot
do so and certainly the new upcoming version 3, to be released in February, will not be supported.

I urge you please if you have a moment to sign an accessible online petition to try to persuade Amazon and Audible to work with Humanware so as to ensure
this service is reinstated. Even if you are not a Stream user, I would be grateful please for a minute of your time so that those of us who use Streams
on a daily basis have a chance of protecting our listening to Audible books in the future.

Marie Kondo is trending again, so here's a queer reflection on Marie Kondo I wrote a few years ago: medium.com/@creatrixtiara/a-no…

Menno… 😭

To be honest – I have not really used Playhouse since I published it 4 months ago.

Just now, I needed to test mermaid rendering in #WebKitGTK to build a “lightweight” renderer for Apostrophe.

It was very satisfying to use Playhouse for that.

If you're curious:

I ended up making a CLI and #pandoc filter to render Mermaid to SVG.

Doesn't do as much but thanks to #WebKitGTK it's 50% faster than Mermaid tools.

Tomorrow I'll test the integration with Apostrophe.

"Cistercian Numbers" are incredibly cool

It's a rare numeric system designed by 13th century monks

Each number is a based on a single vertical stick, with patterns you draw in all four quadrants off it -- top right, top left, bottom right, bottom left

A single glyph can represent a number from 1 to 9,999

It's in my recent weekly "Linkfest" newsletter, here: buttondown.email/clivethompson…

Heard about #commonvoice (commonvoice.mozilla.org/)? This is an easy way to contribute to #FLOSS. Such projects need contributors (e.g. people who give data samples or review data).
We used this for teaching statistics (#rstats). Students should find out if there are gender differences by counting male vs. female contributors. There were significantly more men in our sample. Bad for unbiased #AI! If more use such projects, we can also grow the open datasets faster and fairer. #genderinequality

Episode 212: All that’s new in HumanWare’s Victor Reader Stream third generation, is it time for us to do visual interpretation differently, and an Australian bar says if you’re blind and by yourself, it’s a safety risk for you to drink mosen.org/episode-212-all-that…

In today's episode of 'website security theatre' we present the US Government's "TreasuryDirect" site.

They don't just disable copy-and-paste into the password field, they disable *keyboard entry* into the password field. You are required to click buttons on this virtual keyboard in order to enter your password. Kudos to them for making high-entropy random passwords difficult to use!

Oh, and the password is also case-insensitive, probably because implementing shift-key support in the virtual keyboard would have been too complex.
