In an attempt to enforce Prohibition, the Prohibition Bureau began adding poison to industrial alcohol to prevent its consumption, killing between 10,000 and 50,000 people. This was supported by people like Wayne Wheeler, who argued that the victims had...

Tell me if you can relate to this:

When you were a kid, you were Smart. You grasped concepts, skills, and ideas right away, and were frequently praised for it. You did well in school and being Smart became part of your identity, to the point that when you weren’t immediately good at something, you tended to avoid it or give up on it. After awhile you stopped risking having the wrong answer to a question...

When I was a teenager and my voice dropped, I wasn't immediately good at singing high notes, so I figured I must just be a baritone. It wasn't until almost 20 years later, when I started singing karaoke, that I started to experiment more and found that I could actually hit high notes with some practice. But to get there, I think I had to be free to experiment in a low-stakes environment, particularly without the pressure to be the musical prodigy that I had been as a child.

JW's cautioned against using AI tools

JW corporate location volunteer residents, including world headquarters residents, just received a letter, dated May 11, 2023, notifying them of rules surrounding the use of AI. Corporate location representatives have been asked not to use AI tools to write code that will be used in internal apps. AI is also not to be used to improve articles that are being written for JW literature.

The letter is read about 13 minutes into the video.

Additionally, this article was recently posted on jw.org for the general public to read.

Why do I care? I have family in this organization, including my parents. JW's are usually skeptical when it comes to utilizing new technologies, so the article is not a shock to me. I have no problem with JW leadership teaching their members how to use AI safely. However, I'm worried that the way they speak about AI will cause their members to fear AI tools or shy away from using those tools.

Thank you to my exjw allies on exjw Discord for bringing these items to my attention.

@miki OMG hahaha. "Years after Conan Doyle's death, Levi Edgar Young, a descendant of Brigham Young and a Mormon general authority, alleged that the author had privately apologised, saying that "He [Conan Doyle] said he had been misled by writings of the time about the Church"[6] and had "written a scurrilous book about the Mormons."[7]"

So much fragility! That is really telling. Do not believe for a second that this happened. Just LOL.

@objectinspace @miki I'm old enough to remember when JWs forbade the internet. They did this for an incredibly long time. Oh and that weird registry hack they did to enable accessibility in their library, which they refused to put online until relatively recently. Those were some interesting times. Note: Wasn't a JW myself, just new several.

@objectinspace @miki Yeah there used to be a key you'd have to add under local machine I think and then their application would be reasonably accessible. If you didn't do that, the text displayed pretty weirdly at least for screen readers. Then they added a toggle, but all it did was do the work to add that key for you.

@arush @objectinspace @miki They have an iPhone app called JW Library now as well. Edits to publications have become commonplace, which is why they encourage their users to view the electronic copies of their literature. Re: oral sex edits. That's what you'd see in even my members only copy of the tool.
in reply to Amanda Carson

JW’s cautioned against using AI tools
@arush @objectinspace @miki Oh yeah. Back in the day, that was pretty much the only accessible access we had to their literature. And like, you need that literature to prepare for leading a bible study or participating in comment-based discussions. Without the literature, you can't participate and are basically seen as just filling a seat and not contributing.

JW’s cautioned against using AI tools
@objectinspace @miki Yeah and apparently they penalize you for not contributing. That's why I got involved. Because my friend was being penalized by her congregation's elders along with family members. I did it for her but I swear that was the crepiest bit of accessibility related tech support I've done.

JW’s cautioned against using AI tools
@arush @objectinspace @miki Oh yeah. That's why I got it working too. So I don't blame you for helping. Of course, now there's an email list where this guy just emails out the study material each week. I'm still on that because me leaving would raise suspicion and cause more questions. It just goes into spam now.

@arush @objectinspace I’m mildly curious about what they do for other languages. I know they exist here as an organization, I’ve heard through the grapevine that they supposedly have excellent accessibility of their materials and even provide them in Braille, but I don’t even know anybody, or even of anybody, who would be a blind member outside the US.

While I was having a drink on Retro at the weekend, I was approached by a despairing woman asking for support at a counter Posie Parker protest on Sunday 28th in Hyde Park. Apparently numbers last time were distressingly low.

I apologised that I wouldn't be able to make it what with being a visitor, but said I'd spread the word. London queer folks, please go if you can! posieisafascist.com/

It's been a while since I've taken a photo! This is the Zizkov Tower in Prague, Czech Republic. It's said to be the second ugliest building in the world (second only to the Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore). However, living in the area around it, you can't help but love it. It's a symbol that watches over you when you come home from a pub, and sits on the horizon when you're out with your family. Plus, it'll look amazing in 700 years! #photography #prague

🦀 I wrote a proposal for an #[export] attribute in #rustlang to allow for *dynamic* linking between Rust crates, without losing memory safety at the linker boundary.

This will make other ABI work aimed at Rust FFI directly usable between Rust crates as well.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a big tech company humbled this badly by a startup. Sundar keeps shipping interviews and op-eds to the press about the dangers of AI instead of product to compete with OpenAI.

The company is cooked.

Amazon-owned online pharmacy PillPack.com has confirmed a data breach. PillPack said it was due to credential stuffing, where passwords from other breaches are used to break into accounts on other sites — in this case, PillPack.

Here's the kicker.

"The unauthorized person logged into 19,032 accounts in total, and 3,614 of those accounts contained prescription information."

How did Amazon not notice that hackers broke into 19,000 accounts — especially since it allegedly offers MFA?
