@thunderbird Yes, this was really weird. Esp. because it used to be a tab or message pane tile. I was trying to open Thunderbird and Firefox boots up; why? This is esp. bad if the browser is left closed, maybe due to a 20 windows 700 tabs session and then boom: either all overwritten (less likely) or it cogs the system when not expected. Please roll back this change. @fluepke

Re last boost about the Tape It app this is looking pretty neat, and VoiceOver doesn’t start sounding quiet or start lagging when you record, I think this also may be the first app outside Voice Memos to support lossless recording. Not sure yet I like the UI, but definitely worth looking at if you record on your phone a lot
@pitermach I'm not interested if it doesn't support the ability to bypass iOS audio processing, which is coincidentally what causes Voiceover to sound all quiet and stuff. Granted, this is something that most people wouldn't want in the context in which this app presents itself.
@BorrisInABox I don’t see any obvious place to do it, the UI is pretty minimalistic. I also only tried with stereo recording. Doesn’t mean the option’s not there or that it doesn’t do it by default when recording mono though.

I've never tried tobacco myself, but what I find confusing about it is it doesn't even seem like an interesting drug, in the sense of changing one's perceptions or way of thinking or anything like that. It just... makes you cough? Can't really see the point of it.

here's a question I'd love an answer for: has anyone genuinely done any research into how neural networks fare as an estimation method compared to other estimation methods like least squares?
because this is the only thing that actually matters when people claim that neural networks are "better": there is always a tradeoff between the number of computations done and the accuracy of the resulting function, and a method can only be "better" if it manages to improve this tradeoff. I've seen plenty of research clarifying that neural networks have the ability to estimate any function to an arbitrary precision, but this is pretty worthless when evaluating it compared to other methods if you don't actually have a way of quantifying it compared to better methods
like, everyone is going full-in on neural networks and my theory remains that people just pivoted hard to nonsense biological analogies about "working like brains" and have not done any actual research into quantifying how good their methods are
Hot tip of the day, as it's one worth re-posting once in a blue moon: Use MMSYS.cpl after pressing Win+ R, to open the classic version of the sound control panel. From here, you can press the first letter of your sound device and press alt+S to set it as default, or press spacebar to open the property sheet for it. If muted: Press CTRL+tab, tab, spacebar to unmute it, or don't press tab after hitting CTRL+tab, but use arrows to adjust volume directly. Either way, it's sexy, it's old, it works.
@bermudianbrit yeah, to be honest I thought the writing was on the wall for it a long time ago when the "volume mixer" panel got added to the modern sound settings area, since that does give you one extra thing to change per-app audio device you can't do in the old one. But nope, still there in insider builds, too. Same with NCPA.CPL, which brings up, good old Network Connections from Windows XP days. Ah yes, 20+ year old code, yum yum.

@cublanco @bermudianbrit The first Macintosh I used (they still called them Macintosh back then) was running System 7.1 in 1992. When I got my first modern Macbook Pro (2011), a lot of those old concepts still held true. So, there's that.
This is my answer to what do I hate about modern interfaces. They all suck in some way and no longer allow this. Either it is no first letter navigation, up arrow does something unexpected, home/end keys don't move the value to the min/max value, focus jumps somewhere where it shouldn't, etc... Good old days where keyboard navigation was logical and predictable.
@jscholes ha. Yeah same same! Always trips me up when working in Unix shells. I only did it to have punctuation of various synthesizers spell it out for others to not have to review manually.
If you want to make a hotkey for this, go to c:\windows\system32 and find the file named mmsys.cpl. Context menu, send to, desktop as shortcut. From there, go to properties and make your hotkey. Same for ncpa.cpl.

If you use brew’s curl on macOS, are you really using it? I installed and had curl setup a couple of years ago. Today it appears that curl was now pointing to Apple’s version, which has this issue (daniel.haxx.se/blog/2024/03/08…). Looks like brew doesn’t add a symlink for curl to /opt/homebrew/bin. Running `ln -s /opt/homebrew/opt/curl/bin/curl /opt/homebrew/bin` resolved the issue.
