Fucking BANGER of an opener in @pluralistic 's latest newsletter:

The Secret IRS Files revealed the fact that many of America's oligarchs pay no tax at all. Some of them even get subsidies intended for poor families, like Jeff Bezos, whose tax affairs are so scammy that he was able to claim to be among the working poor and receive a federal Child Tax Credit, a $4,000 gift from the American public to one of the richest men who ever lived

On OpenStreetMap, someone added "bad" as value to the "cuisine" property in our (former) university canteen 😁 (before it was closed due to hygiene reasons)

I’ve been unemployed for almost 6 months from my last tech job and have been unable to find employment. I can make more an hour driving a city bus than I made working in my last job (I looked it up). Why in the hell would I want to remain in the tech industry and beg for work when I’m failing every single time I send out a resume? This is an industry that I have been a part of for 30+ years but no longer cares about me. I really think I’m done.

I've heard people wonder "as a developer, will AI kill my job?"
I think there is a definitely non-zero chance that it might...

But not because an LLM is going to write all the code, better, faster and cheaper, no. Because, when this bubble finally pops and tech companies are left with nothing but piles of out-dated GPUs and plummeting stock prices, they'll "fix" the problem the only way they know: by firing 30% of their workforce!

I still miss shoutboxes. Your friends would come to your site, because theyre really the only ones that went there, and could just leave you a little message. They were kind of like guestbooks, but meant to be more conversational. Little special places on the web for yourself and your friends was a neat time.

@fredbrooker Já vím jsem na to koukal, proto jsem měl radost hned v prvním tootu.

We just released Mastodon 4.3.1!

It contains some bug fixes and a few small features, like (optional) grouping of follow notifications and improvements the fediverse:creator setup instructions.

Upgrading requires re-compiling frontend assets (if not using Docker), instructions are in the release notes : github.com/mastodon/mastodon/r…

Our latest productivity blog is out - and it was inspired by one of @RL_Dane's many Thunderbird tips, tricks, and hacks! If you're fighting against an overflowing inbox, and don't know where to start, the 'Grouped by Sort' view can help.

On that note, I couldn't find a way to do "group by sender, sort by count" in Thunderbird. It's one of the main reasons I use a fork now.
in reply to Qazm

@Qazm
Ooo, that would be a neat feature request! I can see how that would be helpful in sorting out a really out-of-control inbox, like my 20-year-old gmail account. XD

@stepan já HE používám, ale evidentně to bylo používané spamerama a botama a tak google a cloudflare omezují služby nebo musí klikat Captchu. Nevím zda na to existuje řešení
in reply to Petr Ferschmann

Not enough people are talking about the incredible work that @firefox is doing with PDFs. I can now edit text, highlight, add images, and interact with pretty much every PDF I get without issues.
I still remember just a few years back when the sentence "without Adobe Acrobat there's nothing you can do" was the norm.
in reply to Aleca

Is it also possible to edit PDF pages like adding, removing or sorting slides?

This is the PDF feature I miss the most, since I moved alway from MacOS.

in reply to Fello Mello

@fello I don't think so, at least not yet.
I'm sure if you open a feature request they might consider it

Is there a good portable asynchronous filesystem access crate for Rust yet? (I'm aware of a number of crates that use blocking filesystem operations from threads, and that's not at all what I mean. I want to issue large numbers of requests from few threads so the I/O scheduler can sort them out.)

(Thanks, POSIX, for assuming that disks are infinitely fast. 🙄)

I've been using @Tutanota for a few years now and have been very happy with how they've grown. #Encryption for the common person in a simple no-nonsense platform is cool to see. Would love to see them continue to innovate with #privacy in mind like they have so far.

Why is Linux OOM-panic a thing? This strikes me as the thing that it's most important for a system NOT to do.
in reply to Ben Cox

Linux OOM management lately has been... sorry I lack nice words to describe it truth-fully.

I think "Windows like" is kinda close, while still vague.

@cJ the Government should send it pre-filled forms with whatever the fuck they got from the various reports (employer, financial instituation)

I should NOT have to copy my T4 and R1 into a form when they already have that info.

And then log into their system and adjust it.

Like many European countries do.

I pretty much don't have any interest in the Steam Deck (besides of size) for the fact that the APU in there is starting to really show it’s age. Now there are more competition in the handheld with more powerful APUs at the expense of using a little bit more power.

The Radeon 890m really makes the Deck look more out of date as it has performance close to a Radeon 470/570 or a GTX 1060. Not to mention, we are seeing more games that are unplayable on the Deck or won't play well, and the lack of USB 4 support to use an eGPU doesn't help. After all, this is a computer
in a console form factor, and PC games are rarely optimized well.

That said, I would like to see an SoC using ARM with Radeon graphics, it would improve battery life, but x86-64 emulation on ARM64 is another story, but it’s possible given what Asahi Linux can do playing games from Steam using Proton.

Want to build a thriving tech company? Easy! Just ignore user complaints, double down on those privacy-violating features everyone hates, and exploit user data to the max. That's the winning formula, right? 🤡
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Forget innovation, user experience, and ethical considerations. In today's tech world, the fastest route to the top is questionable practices. Who needs happy users when you have soaring stock prices? It's a proven business model!
