Is there a math concept that never made sense to you? Which one or ones do you wish someone would explain in new ways?

If none of these come close you can mention something as a comment.

  • fractions (6%, 3 votes)
  • the derivative and rates of change (45%, 22 votes)
  • conditional probability, sample spaces and such (54%, 26 votes)
  • AND, OR and other logical operators (4%, 2 votes)
48 voters. Poll end: in 2 days

in reply to myrmepropagandist

I got a pretty decent maths background and I can do derivatives and integrals and things, but I don't get limits very well. I sort of get it conceptually (something gets closer and closer to x when y grows) but I don't get how you can operate on those. Like the typical f'(x)=(f(x+h)-f(x))/h when h tends to 0... How can you possibly get anything out of that... when there's a tends to above and below, it's like you can kind of use them as real quantities but they're not?

And yes, I am mildly embarrassed about admitting this.

I was too busy last year, but this year I finish finals just in time to have fun with #AdventOfCode! Now, the question:

  • do I stay in my comfort zone with Haskell (and finally learn string manipulation with it where I’ve just used c ffi before), or
  • expand my low-level Rust knowledge by writing and optimizing the solutions?

#Haskell #Rustlang

  • Haskell (0%, 0 votes)
  • Rust (60%, 3 votes)
  • A secret third thing (40%, 2 votes)
5 voters. Poll end: in 6 days

#TIL I learned that German cities used to have a "Bettelvogt" or "Armenvogt" - a minor official whose job was it to "control the behavior" of beggars and other poor people.

They were explicitly tasked to _control_ beggars, and not help them in any way. Which just goes to show that shitty behavior towards poor people by the authorities was well-established long before the advent of #LateStageCapitalism .

well, after today, a week of our favorite thing, vacation! Not sure what I will do with it, likely hang out here and listen to podcasts and things but looking forward to it. Let's see what kind of trouble I can find
in reply to Martin from Toronto

Hey, I don't get any vacation, not even paid vacation. Perks of my contract! LOL. But I can take a vacation any time I want. I just notify job humans and off we gooo. :D But I feel like not taking vacations, they are boring. Better to sit and sing my heart out and type on a computer than be bored. LOL

INXS: Never Tear Us Apart

Prý nejslavnější hudební klip natáčený v Praze, a to ještě před pádem komunismu, v roce 1987. Prý se jim líbilo, že je to všechno "netknuté" a vypadá to středověce. Každopádně, až se nechce věřit, kolik klipů se v Praze natočilo (a na kolika z nich je hlavní nádraží).

There is talk about about re-layering the transport parts of HTTP: provide a common multiplexing, streaming protocol that works over TCP as well as QUIC.

Motivations are twofold:
- extending HTTP now requires double work or breaks at CDNs (they talk QUIC to clients, but not to backends)
- TCP will not go away and HTTP/2 is weak in regard to DoS handling. No one wants to put more effort into extending h2.

So, there might be a HTTP/5 coming on top of a tcp/quic multipleXing thingie (TUIX?).

Mekkora egy kibaszott mess lett a privacy miatt a Mac-ek közti költözés... Éjjel átmásolt mindent a két gép, de egy teljes órát elbasztam azzal, hogy minden auth elveszett, léphettem be a gittől elkezdve az összes appon át a fél Internetbe. Rettenetes élmény. Ráadásul ilyenkor boot után egyszerre 100 dolog alertezik jelszóért

Aaa, that's the worst. Happened here before... Mac is only in English right? I haven't missed new languages being added in hopefully. Apple, kindly add more languages to Mac. Thanks. I am glad you sorted it out. 💖

I’m being told that the largest Mastodon instance - mastodon.social - is now hiding my profile.

One person telling me it’s because of German obsession with making up antisemitism where there is none.

Anyone who knows me and my work knows that I frequently platform critical Jewish voices. My MA thesis was on Yiddish and Hebrew, I do memory studies which includes Holocaust studies, and I am co-producing a Jewish podcast by three radical Jews.

So what’s up Mastodon? Am I too Arab for you?

O how I wish that Izotope / Native Instruments (or vice versa) let me create my own bundles rather than having to choose from the ones they put together. I do my best to avoid products with poor accessibility. Well, let's see... :)

OK Merican Mastodon mates. I would be most grateful if you would share your wisdom about which mobile carrier you think is the best, and why. I’m after plenty of data, good speeds and good coverage. Good audio on calls would also be helpful given the hearing impairment.
Thanks.

in reply to Jonathan Mosen

Depends on where you are, and where you go, I guess.
Verizon is over-all probably the best in terms of coverage. Not the fastest anymore, that's T-Mobile, but I've found that T-Mobile suffers big time if you go outside of city limits, where in those same places, Verizon usually works, even if it's slow.
Also, I have generally had better call quality on Verizon, especially between Verizon customers where it's 48 kHz. With other providers, it's 16 or even 8 kHz, though fortunately, most of the GSM nastiness has gone away. Now it's just crappy noise canceling or whatever, which would happen anywhere.
in reply to Patrick Perdue

@BorrisInABox I will be doing a lot of travel, especially to the left coast, which is where most of big tech is. But I guess I won’t be going to the boonies too often. Still, have heard all sorts of negatives about tMobile’s coverage.
in reply to Jonathan Mosen

It's fantastic where it works, and basically doesn't exist where it doesn't. I had both T-Mobile and Verizon on the same phone for a while. T-Mobile essentially doesn't work in my not at all the boonies New York City neighborhood.
in reply to Patrick Perdue

@BorrisInABox Oh, that sounds a bit dire. Are carriers using different codecs? I used to have an AT&T prepaid SIM when I was in the US a lot, and the call quality was noticeably inferior compared with what we get here.
in reply to Jonathan Mosen

Everybody uses AMR or AMRWB as a baseline. Verizon also uses EVS, which is about as good as it gets for that kind of thing.
My immediate (biological) family are all on AT&T. Calls between them from/to my Verizon line are noticeably not as good as calls from Verizon customers. Not particularly bad, just what I call standard HD average.
in reply to Patrick Perdue

@BorrisInABox I don't know anything about our codecs here but calls made one way sound better than the other between two cells on different networks. Which seems odd, because obviously both support the higher quality one.
in reply to Jonathan Mosen

@BorrisInABox In addition to Verizon, my wife and I had T-Mobile for a while. We weren't frequent travelers and I certainly was not traveling as much as you probably will be but I didn't notice any differences in coverage between T-Mobile and Verizon. Again, your use case and needs are a bit different than mine, though.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield I was once traveling a pretty large stretch of road with a bunch of people who were all on T-Mobile. They kept losing coverage, and My Verizon still consistently worked. So it absolutely depends on where you are.
in reply to Jonathan Mosen

Because I get my home Internet from Comcast via their Xfinity brand, I use Xfinity Mobile, which is an MVNO that uses Verizon. Its plans are more inexpensive than what I'd likely pay if I hhad gone with Verizon directly. However, in order to subscribe to Xfinity Mobile, you do need to subscribe to Comcast's Internet service. Comcast is reliable but they probably won't offer symmetrical speeds in your area, although this is coming. Knowing what I know about your preferences, I won't be surprised if you decide to go with Verizon Fios for your home Internet, which will offer symmetrical speeds, and if this is the case, Xfinity's mobile service won't be available to you. However, if you go with Verizon's Fios for home Internet, they may have a bundle with their mobile carrier that might be reasonable for you. Otherwise, you'll surely find other MVNOs that use Verizon that might be more inexpensive than directly going with Verizon.

@vick21 I'm not actually sure where to find it in Settings. I noticed it in quick settings. New ones always get added to the bottom.

Ugh. Apparently Audible is recommending books by Jordan Peterson now. I really, really wish there was a half decent alternative that could match Audible in terms of afordability. I guess Libby is the closest, but you can't get everything there, and that is doubly true when it comes to the RNIB thing, or NLS Bard if you're in the US. You can't even guarantee audio quality with either of those.

In the midst of my travel preparations, I apparently wanted fries so I got off my ass and did all the potato cutting even though I went overboard. At least I can cook more if I want them later. I can preseason and oil and put what I don't cook into a plastic bag and let them sit in the fridge. My potatoes turned out to be medallions and wedges rather than actual fries because I don't know how to actually cut a potato into fries themselves but it's going to be good anyway so I'm not complaining. All this effort for a damn snack lol. Now my potatoes are soaking to get rid of some of that starch. The fun part comes next when I get to take a trip into the seasoning cabinet.
in reply to MariahL

Good job! :) One advice, try to cut them equally, equal size and all that. As for cutting fries, you cut the potatoes in half by the longer side, so if oval, or oblong, you put the knife and cut two halves that are longer. You cut out strips, maybe put your finger to measure, put the knife next to it get your finger out of there and cut. There strip, if it's too big of a strip, cut the strip in half any way you want to.

One of the worst misfeatures of #Mastodon from a safety angle: If you get an abusive reply to your post, you can't remove it even by blocking the person. Even after blocking, your server still shows the abusive reply to everyone else.

There has been a patch ready to fix this for 2 years, 6 months, and 1 day. @Gargron has not approved it, and has provided *zero* explanation for why he will not allow it to be merged.

Nvidia ( $NVDA ) reported Q3 earnings of $0.81 EPS on $35.1 billion revenue, surpassing expectations. The Data Center business hit $30.8 billion, up 112% YoY, while gaming revenue reached $3.3 billion. Nvidia's stock fell 1% post-announcement.

What do you think about Nvidia's future in the AI-driven market?

Is there any chance we can encourage you to trend #NVIDIA when that's the company you mean, please? I know what their NASDAQ handle is, but #NVDA is much more widely known as the name of the screen reader we make and the #NVDA hashtag is very widely used for the screen reader. It will save both our communities polluting each other's feeds. If you'd like to find out more about the screen reader, our website is nvaccess.org/ - Thank you!

Hey all. I am going to present NVDA to some teachers of my school, and perhaps as I think, if I manage it good there is a chance it's being used. Maybe not even for our school, but for some other blind people. I don't want to miss this chance adversiting this great screenreader. Of course I am writing something by myself, but if you have any suggestions what I could explain, this also could be an addon, please tell me so. Thanks in advance. #NVDA #blind #accessibility #school

Key Transparency and the Right to be Forgotten

This post is the first in a new series covering some of the reasoning behind decisions made in my project to build end-to-end encryption for direct messages on the Fediverse. (Collectively, Fedi-E2EE.) Although the reasons for specific design decisions should be immediately obvious from reading the relevant specification (and if not, I consider that a bug in the specification), I believe writing about it less formally will…

in reply to Eden Linnea

@EdenLinnea There's really no reason for a manufacturer to come out with a device these days which does NOT support HID. Offhand I don't know if there are any multi-line devices which don't , but if you have a particular device (or have one you are considering), I can certainly find out.
