1 week ago a cis woman fencer refused to compete against a trans woman fencer, so USA Fencing disqualified her from the rest of the tournament.

The best part is the statement USA Fencing made, four days ago, on the disqualification:

“A fencer is not permitted to refuse to fence another properly entered fencer for any reason. Under these rules, such a refusal results in disqualification and the corresponding sanctions. This policy exists to maintain fair competition standards and preserve the sport’s integrity.
We understand that the conversation on equity and inclusion pertaining to transgender participation in sport is evolving. USA Fencing will always err on the side of inclusion, and we’re committed to amending the policy as more relevant evidence-based research emerges, or as policy changes take effect in the wider Olympic & Paralympic movement.” apnews.com/article/fencing-ste…

@rommix0 This post explains why OpenAI specifically choosing to show that they can generate art in the Studio Gibli style is so bad: tante.cc/2025/03/28/vulgar-dis…

@matt @rommix0 Oooh yeah that's very interesting and a great perspective on this. I suspect it's why I'm also not against those new types of web crawlers that foil AI systems into a honeypot of fake links with garbage text, it's a way to reclaim at least some power for the creators. We could extend that to any other branch of it (like gobbling up torrented books Meta did too) and so to me it's a lot more valid to argue against AI on that notion of power and control rather than how it regurgitates what it knows.

The handful of people I know who work for this guy all roll their eyes at the mention of his name.

Try it with any Shopify employees you know, just say "hey sorry about your boss" and watch the floodgates open. It's a fun game you can play at home!

In #Munich, the surface metro is called "S"-Bahn and the underground is the "U"-Bahn. There's this elevator on my way to work that has these three buttons: "O", "S" and "U". Which one would you pick to get to the "S"-trains when you're coming from the "U"-trains?

Over and over I've seen tourists with suitcases make the wrong choice in this elevator. It bothered me so much that I've printed a label to fix the #UX of this #usability disaster.

It's been there for 2 weeks now ✌️

Dire Wolves. Back from extinction, thanks to the miracle of genetic engineering or something.

Only it seems what they've really done is changed an ordinary not-extinct wolf to to just look like a dire wolf. Not quite as impressive, seeing as how humans have been turning wolves into basset hounds and bulldogs and chihuahuas and great danes for centuries, without any gene editing tools at all.

The whole thing reminds me of this story from more than 20 years ago:

We're thrilled to announce that the migration of matrix.org to the Matrix Authentication Service (MAS) is complete and went according to plan!

Find all the details and videos of how it looks like on Element X and Fractal on our blog!

I administer my own home server. I've set up an upstream OIDC server (Authentik) in anticipation of the new MAS standard. What else do I need to do in order to have a smooth migration?

I've seen a lot of promotional material about the new MAS implementation, but not much about how it will break my instance or how my configuration will need to change.

From "Apple Human Inteface Guidelines 1987", page 61:

Alert boxes

An alert box resembles a modal dialog box (see Figure 3-13). The only way the user can respond is by clicking buttons or by pressing Enter or Return. Alert boxes might contain dials and buttons but usually not text fields, radio buttons, or check boxes.

Note the recommended general arrangement of the elements. The icon is at the left, with the message text to the right. The buttons are below the message, with the default button, boldly outlined, at the lower right. The default is the likeliest or safest response, and can be chosen by simply pressing Return or Enter.

The way to be sure the default button is really "safe" is to word the message carefully.

Messages in alert boxes must be brief, informative, and friendly without being misleading. If the alert is warning the user of a serious situation, it must be made clear—not hidden in a polite phrase. Messages should be phrased so that the user can easily answer them, and the wording should reflect the user's point of view, not the programmer's. Figure 3-15 shows an example.

It's time for another Thunderbird Monthly Development Digest! In this month's issue, we have updates on:

* Upstream changes
* EWS features that have landed in Daily
* Our Calendar UI rebuild
* Global Messaging Database work
* The new Account Hub

Are you getting it yet?

The Venn diagram showing the overlap between AI maximalists and fascists is consolidating ever closer to a circle-shaped layer cake. CEO Tobi Lütke *delights* in his employees cowering. It's the only explanation.

I'm not surprised, but I still feel the breath catch in my throat as I behold the inhumanity of it all.

Whilst this doesn't even begin to make up for all of the horrors, Boris Johnson being bitten by an ostrich is significantly better than Boris Johnson *not* being bitten by an ostrich. So for your viewing pleasure......Boris Johnson being bitten..... by an ostrich.
