Re: latest boosts about KDE Plasma 6.5 and accessibility, I think that brings me one step closer to choosing KDE Plasma when I take the plunge into Linux as my desktop OS. From what I've heard, it sounds like KDE Plasma might be more familiar to a long-time Windows user like me than GNOME.
Or I might still jump in the deep end, forego the full-blown conventional desktop environment, and choose the niri Wayland compositor (github.com/YaLTeR/niri), which also implements the keyboard monitor feature required by Orca.
As for choice of distro, I think I want to jump on the immutable OS bandwagon, rather than use the conventional fragile writable root filesystem with a package manager trying to keep it clean. So, maybe Universal Blue (universal-blue.org/).
Universal Blue manufactures a diverse set of operating system images to provide the the reliability of a Chromebook, but with the flexibility and power of a traditional Linux desktop.
Out of curiosity, what does that desktop environment offer that makes it advantageous for screen reader users? Or do you have enough vision to use monitors as well as Orca?
@neal Seriously thinking about it. Yeah, I could create the perfect stripped-down configuration that works for me, using a light Wayland compositor like niri. Or I could be part of something bigger that will be usable by a lot more people.
I guess the question is whether the familiarity will be a benefit or a stumbling block when it's still different, i.e. will the differences be more annoying if the rest is familiar, which is mostly a personal consideration.
Zorin is based on GNOME but looks like Windows. It lags a bit behind in versions, so the recent accessibility improvements are probably missing. Flatpak apps shouldn't be affected though? I'll likely move my parents to Zorin soon - they've been using Windows since 95. Curious how it will go.
KDE is on a roll lately, and keeps on rolling with today's release of KDE Plasma 6.5. As the project itself notes, this release focuses on relatively small improvements, refinements, and other niceties, without making any massive changes. With Linux desktops taking accessibility more seriously lately than ever before, I want to focus on the accessibility improvements first.
Wow! Its alarming to find out that something is making a sound, and you're not hearing it. Someone sure can though, over a VoIP link, over an air distance of three feet, with a 57dB noise floor, through a Rode NT1-A, connected to a Mackie ProFX 12 V3. It seems that something in my environment is constantly squealing at some untold high frequency. I'm not hearing it. They did. This individual shall remain nameless, but they sure as hell have a gosh darn good ear! And mine suck! Now I have to find this unheard squeal.

@BorrisInABox Three in a month? That's just insanely unlucky. Unfortunately, its RAID's utter grand canyon-sized pitfall. Recovery procedures, in effect, work to destroy the functional stock, which then further degrades the situation, and in one further brutal act of unluckyness, the situation could be that recovery is not yet complete by the time more disks give up the ghost from being hammered to death. Should this go beyond the fault tolerant number of disks allowed by that RAID level, its all gone. But I'm glad your luck did not extend to utter brutalness in this situation.
@VE3RWJ 14k would be a dream. I'm at about 7.5k on the right, and less than that on the left. So I very much can't hear it. What I can and will do, though, is play with filters and varispeed.

Thank you, thank you a thousand times for having said what I've been thinking my whole life. I just don't get and don't feel this mass of chaotic mess with no melody, no harmony, no beauty, no nothing, this metallic noise someone calls #Music. Unfortunately, everything from the start of the twentieth century (I'm talking about academic music) is trash, with really little exceptions like minimalists and some composers who do write music, but otherwise it's just a hodgepodge of random notes.
@menelion You hit the nail on the head. Academic music. That’s exactly what it is. I’m sorry, but if you got into music to make write things so that other people can study how much of a genius you are rather than to make beautiful art, you picked the wrong profession. Go show off somewhere else.

Depends on the use case I guess. If it's heavy DevOps stuff (and aviation), sure. If it's anything else, like event schedules (for remote events, for in-person local is always prefered), just figure out where the user is and do the right thing.

I had always been a heavy user of em-dashes, and even incorrectly so, with spaces around them, just like LLMs — I guess I just preferred that visually.
Now I find myself intentionally using a single hyphen - or often an unmerged double hyphen -- to signal my humanity.
