The Open Web Index goes public on June 6!
For over two years OpenWebSearch.eu has worked on a federated pan-European Open Web Index to promote independent web search. In June @openwebsearcheu will make almost a petabyte (and growing) of open web data available to anyone who is interested.
Join the kick-off event to learn how to access and use the Open Web index.

I agree search IS broken. Seems like the thing we need is free open source search. Anyone know if this is a current project or where to ask to find out?#search #broken #googlesucks

The decline is directly related to the AI turd that is being pushed out in Google search. It is not clear when I go to a website what is AI generated, AI curated and what is written by humans. And the results are pure thrash.

Goddamit #google I am not searching on Amazon or Ebay. I do not want to purchase something. I want information. If I want to buy something I would go to shopping.google.com

We are committed to surfacing content from the Small Web in our search results, which makes Kagi uniquely different to any other search engine out there.

It is not only part of our mission to humanize the web but we genuinely feel that this improves the quality of search results and discoverability of high quality, relevant content (created by humans!)

Search for “Google Slides” & you may see that the first image they select for one of their flagship office softwares is... Someone’s SEO-cash-grab “custom product” spam. Plastic slippers with the Google slides icon on them? Google’s own intellectual property is being parasitized here. What chance do independent artists stand? Google doesn’t care, as long as they are paid by search spammers who, in turn, somehow think this will make money. #search #searchCrisis #AISlop #google #ai #sloppocalypse

I have build a new and improve #search functionality for @MapComplete. Still a work in progress, but a first testable version is onli e here: pietervdvn.github.io/mc/featur…

It supports switching themes, showing search results on the map and suggestions.

Still to do: highlighting the result on hover and making sure that a search result and layer info don't both show.

Please, test it, break it and let me know what went wrong, what was confusing and what you'd still love to see.

When you search for "identita občana" (Citizen Identity, ID for the Czech e-government), the first link #Google gives you (as an ad) is to a malicious website.

I wonder if companies like Google will ever be held accountable for spreading dangerous scams and getting paid for it.

The Man Who Killed #Google #Search.

This guy is taking no prisoners. Even though we all have a good intuitive sense as to why Google has gone to shit, there has been something slippery about it. This article makes it all more concrete.

Sometimes finding perfect #search results can be a pain and Google buying dominance doesn't help. 🔎

Hey #Fediverse! @Seirdy has a 'forever' article: A look at search engines with their own indexes

One thing this article should remind you all about: there are three dominant #search indexes - Google, Bing, and Yandex. And Yandex is dominant outside of English.

But there are real options, and many of them are open source, especially for outside the commercial internet. (I am partial to the MarginaliaSearch project.)

Following on from this Initial Mastodon Guide, I have been seeing a lot of people asking for tips on how to find people and content to fill in their Home Timeline.
I decided to make a follow up video on how to best use search and also cover why sometimes you don't get the results you expect.

Any boosts will be appreciated to help others improve their Mastodon experience.
