Moving back to mastodon.social/@lzap

Please follow me at @lzap if you like my tech/linux/servers content.

It was fun, gotosocial backend works great, however, as my network grew it started triggering some red flags on my ISP infrastructure as running Mastodon instance at home was not great idea.

I considered moving my instance to cloud, however, my old account still works, the instance is faster now and I am just too lazy. Also, hiking weekend is approaching and I do not have time for any kind of migration. :-)

I'm, uh, losing my job 😭 This is going to put me in a rough place. If anyone knows of freelance writing or podcast/video editing gigs they can send my way or boost this, I'd appreciate it tons! Here's my website that links to review samples (recently for the I Dream of Indie YouTube channel), voice work, and other things ryanjameshorner.carrd.co/

Eset has something called Keyboard protection in v16 of its flagship products. It's suitable for preventing keyloggers to do its thing, however reportedly it also affects screen reader experience. Here is an article in czech about this thing

I finished my stint as a Mozilla Fellow and now I'm relaunching my Patreon with a focus on, well, fixing social media.

This means I'm going to continue my concerted work trying to make the fediverse a better place, in the form of best practice guides for running instances, external advocacy, and technical tutorials and training so that more people can contribute software to the fediverse at large.

You can read a partial summary of my work so far at my new Patreon page!

FediBlock starter pack

I'm a little surprised to see a lot of people posting domains in #FediBlock that any competent admin should have blocked on day 1.

Start with the weirder.earth suggested instance blocks, which are generally bigger/more active ones: github.com/weirderearth/weirde…

Tenforward.social has a much longer list with links to admin announcements, with reasons: wiki.tenforward.social/doku.ph…

News on potential collapse of Twitter

Until now I hadn’t appreciated that were very serious structural problems at Twitter. I thought Elon would make it messy, but it would robustly continue. This below, however, is starting to make me much more concerned.

I came across to Mastodon out of curiosity, fun, sense of opportunity & respect for the concept. Now I’m thinking it’s a vital hedge for us all against serious Twitter risks, including collapse.

a 1/ Just want to put this news in plain
language for people.

Senior people at Twitter have resigned in
the last 48 hours. We now now why. They
said in private Slack channels that
@elonmusk is so desperate to recoup his

money, he’s taking crazy risks with YOUR
privacy and safety.

2/ Right now, Twitter is extremely
hackable. That puts every user here
at extreme risk for DM leaks,
identity theft and surveillance.

Elon doesn’t care. He wants his
money. So they resigned. And top
lawyers told Twitter employees to
get whistleblower protections.

Facebook has lost more in absolute terms
over the past month. But Facebook
remains a viable company, almost $300
billion in market capitalization. It's highly
uncertain that Twitter will still exist by
Christmas.

Possible outcomes, ranked by likelihood
(high to low)

1) Twitter is sold for pennies on the dollar.

2) Bankers foreclose and Twitter goes
bust.

3) Servers fail and Twitter goes dark.
4) Divine intervention saves Twitter.

5)Musk's plans somehow work.

In the next episode of my #podcast, Mosen at Large, I'm devoting an hour to Mastodon from a #blindness perspective. As well as discussing some important cultural issues, I'll provide an audio demonstration of using the #web interface and the Metatext #iOS client with a #ScreenReader. A transcript will be available too, for maximum #accessibility. It will be available everywhere you get podcasts. More details here. mosen.org/malppreview0206/

Lets support people on here who've been cleaning up for a while. Ones I've learned about are @Are0h and @CaribenxMarciaX.

Ro has a patreon you can donate to here: patreon.com/Are0h

Marcia has a gofundme here: gofundme.com/f/help-marcia-get…

If you know of any more please comment in the replies so I can learn about them and support.

This seems like an issue that should get a lot more reach than it has. #Accessibility #Mastodon #mastoadmin

@enzo that could perhaps help a little bit, but a proper alt text could actually describe what the smiley looks like, not just the fact that it's a smiley.
For example, we have a :dragon_confused: emoji. It's pretty clear what it's supposed to mean by name alone, but it would be much more useful if we also had an actual description to go with it.

In November I'll perform stand-up comedy about programming & open source at @SeaGL & @`bangbangcon. Save the dates now!

no one really understands what China's "Social Credit System" is about. There's a couple of things in this blog post that makes me raised my eyebrows.
People should refer to the work and explanations of Mrs. Séverine Arsène, and refer to this podcast (in French).

Mastodon server tuning
You know what, I like the ending paragraph. Mastodon is not essential software. It's OK for it to be unreachable sometimes. If someone gets angry at not being able to always and immediately access their instance, maybe they should take a deep breath. There is so much more to life than social media.
I almost even feel like this is a hot take and I'm a little bit worried about posting it. But I still feel it's true.
Thanks for the guide!

It was really nice to contribute to this image of the Cone Nebula that ESO just released to mark 60 years of collaboration. It's one of the many things I love about my current job here: working with our amazing visual team to deliver cool images for you to enjoy.

What you see here is a pillar of dust and gas sculpted by the intense radiation of stars further up, outside of the field of view.

Web folks, how’s that interface look to you? Simple, no? :)

Ah, the joys of having an in-process JavaScript database to play with, even if I had to write it myself (codeberg.org/small-tech/jsdb).

The second screenshot shows you how things are stored in JSDB (hint: as a JavaScript append-only log) ;)
