Boosting both for the content and especially for the alt text. On no other social platform would I, or other blind folk, be able to feel included with posts like this, it's only really on the fediverse that people bother to add descriptions this good, if they add them *at all* on other sites.
To be honest, I think I speak for at least a few blind people when I say that we've become so accustomed to not being able to interact with little posts like this that anything is a refreshing breath of fresh air. But it is very good, yes, and above all, any alt text is way better than nothing.

Any of you #blind #linux nerds know what kind of Vudu I have to do to get #Java #accessibility to work on #ArchLinux? Currently using #openjdk 19 but can switch to whatever JDK, as long as I end up with an accessible GUI.
I already have jdk-opennjdk, jre-openjdk, java-atk-wrapper-openjdk, java-environment, and all the usual suspects installed, but yet it can't find the class. Might try an older version of openjdk.
OK, I'm using a different distro but the idea should be the same. I searched for "java-atk-wrapper.jar" in packages and found it in a dedicated package, libatk-wrapper-java, and in openjdk-8-jre (but not in newer JDKs). What's your use-case? Do you run something like this? java -jar -Dassistive_technologies=org.GNOME.Accessibility.AtkWrapper some-app.jar
@cosmin It's for a uni course. As of now, because they're just small test programs, I've just been compiling to a .class and running that directly. That assistive tech setting is already set in /etc/java-openjdk/accessibility.properties. Commenting it out lets the app start, but with no accessibility of course.
I managed to get it working by extracting java-atk-wrapper.jar and adding that directory to java's classpath, but surely that's not what you're supposed to do? Can I tell the JVM to preload java-atk-wrapper.jar or something?
what do you want to get accessibility for? and also, where is that file? I'm trying to get android studio to work, but not having much luck for the moment
I think android studio packages its own jvm thus manual patching can't be avoided I am afraid. Other than this I have no java app to test. However when looking at java-atk-wrapper packages for arch linux I see there are packages like java-atk-wrapper-common and jdk specific package such as java-atk-wrapper-openjdk11. There is a file /etc/java-openjdk/accessibility.properties installed by the java-atk-wrapper-common package. In that file there is... assistive_technologies=org.GNOME.Accessibility.AtkWrapper Would it be enough to link or copy this file into jdk specific configuration such as /etc/java11-openjdk/ where other config files are stored?
@bgtlover I advise you read the Arch Wiki page on Java as it explains where the different jdk's store their files. But that jar, for your default java runtime, is at /usr/lib/jvm/default/lib/java-atk-wrapper.jar. You can use the archlinux-java command to view and switch between JREs, and the one you have as your default is always symlinked to /usr/lib/jvm/default.
Implemented the Preferences window for #Macstodon today, with a bunch of quality-of-life tweaks:
- The number of toots to load when the app launches (or a profile window is opened) can be customized. Older machines like the SE/30 might want to put this at 0. Newer machines can crank it higher.
- The number of toots to load when pressing the "Refresh" button on a timeline can be customized separately from the launch number.
- Avatars and banners can be disabled. I'm probably going to default to banners off since I can't solve the memory leak around them 😢 But if you have a lot of RAM then you can enable them!
- The image cache can be cleared, if your favourite poster has a new avatar and you want to see it.
I've attached a screenshot that shows the difference between the banner and bannerless profiles, as well as the new prefs window.
Next time: Finishing off profiles, probably. I'm hoping to have the 0.5 release sometime in March (for #MARCHintosh ) 😎

I recommended it yesterday for Tor. As I'm not a Firefox fan, I was relieved to know that if you toggle a setting in Brave, you can just plainly open .onion links and get redirected to Tor websites. If it could handle I2P as well, that would have been even nicer!

Wow! This sounds cool! It reminds me of that restaurant in my area which is themed after railway. All the food names have something to do with trains and drinks are transported to your table through tiny train models riding actual rails across the dining hall. We've been there only once, I hope they're doing fine despite the pandemic and everything.
Baking #bread yesterday, I made a couple of small boules which I thought would be fun to use as bread bowls for #chowder.

Otherwise, just pick what sounds good to you, as you have done. The difference here in the #fediverse is that you have two parts to your account address rather than only one part. Do any of you know how to create chapters in a podcast using windows? I know lots of people do it an apple. I want to know if it’s possible and how convenient it might be to do this in windows. I have three demonstration‘s coming up, and I would like to turn it into chapters, most of the podcast we do are only one item. Just curious. We are about ready to start another cast.

Learning more advanced things because I do things to help other peoples with technology and not myself. Lol. I know you know what that means.
@arush Hello! I have been looking for the longest time myself. It's difficult to find an accessible solution for this. I ended up using Lossless Cut for our podcast. It's meant for cutting videos but the trick works also for chapterizing mp3's. The best part is, this is the only software that embeds chapters in such a way that they are visible in Apple Podcasts despite it being a mp3 file which, according to the Internet, was impossible. The app is Electron, works reasonably well with screen readers mostly due to a wide array of hotkeys which you can discover the typical way, by pressing the question mark in the forms mode of your screen reader. github.com/mifi/lossless-cut/

@arush Likewise, I keep rebuilding my Birdsite circles on here as I go. I hope Lossless Cut proves to be useful. If you need a hand with it, do not hesitate to ask, I chapterize one episode a week for the Pod I'm a part of so I think I've discovered most of the quirks. Glad to hear from you as well!
@arush If it's difficult to find a good chapterizing tool it is as difficult to spot a player that supports chapter marks in mp3 files under Windows. I myself use PotPlayer to verify whether the chapters have integrated well before shipping an episode. GomPlayer works too but seems to be more tolerant of faulty exports which won't pass on most mobile Podcatchers. At some point I was fine to navigate by chapters in Foobar but then it all broke and nobody seems to know why.
