So today it is Friday the 13th and apparently I should have stayed in my bed.

Just spent way too much time troubleshooting why the curl requests I got from Firefox by using "copy request to cUrl" did not work. Turns out it is a Firefox bug. For unknown reason it adds a caret "^" before each parameter separator in the query string in the curl request, breaking everything. 😞

Apologies to Matt, I had meant to share this back when it dropped and it slipped my mind.

@Tutanota Hi! I have a calendar event that I created back in December, which repeats every week. Now that we've switched to summer time, I noticed that the event's time shifted by 1 hour (from 11:00 to 12:00). I'm not sure if this is intended behavior because I personally find it confusing. People normally don't move appointments when we switch from winter to summer time and vice versa. I'm reporting this just in case.
@Tuta

This is the 100 year anniversary of humans having an idea of what the heck the sun and all the stars actually are. If you had asked a leading astronomer in 1925 what the sun was, they would say that it's basically the same as Earth, but very hot.

In Cecilia Payne's doctoral thesis she was the first to say, from spectral data, that the sun was overwhelmingly made of hydrogen and helium.

It was later described as "the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy".

Great day yesterday at #Devconf . Many in-depth discussions after my talk at the @fsfe booth, most of the time together with @llas .

@sofiaritz and @Tobias had a full #FreeYourAndroid workshop, showing people how to flash their phones and the rest of the time had a busy time at the #FSFE booth as well.

Big thank you to all who attended my talk, and to those who joined us at the booth.

@ozzelot Ono to i trochu zapadá.

I'd like to be wrong about this but I think that the combination of this:

and this earlier announcement:

... effectively means that Android is now no longer an open source project in any way that matters, at least for anyone who's not an OEM.

IOS 26 is going to make it possible to add ringtones using the share sheet. Tech sites are not hyping this up enough because you still have to create the ringtone, but I know lots of us know how to do that already and just need the easy way to add it to our phone without going through iTunes. And now, approximately 14 years after Apple supposedly untethered the iPhone from the computer, we have it. So now if you go to one of those ringtone sites, or someone texts you an audio file, or you’re handy with Hokusai or some other audio editor for the iPhone, you can make your own ringtones without a billion steps. Like everything else Apple has done in recently years, it’s taken so long for such a basic feature to arrive that it’s hard for me to even be excited about it, but I sure won’t miss blundering my way through iMazing.

Accessibility Overlays

In this episode, Desiree and I discuss those terrible accessibility overlays that promise to make websites more accessible while actually doing little to improve accessibility. As Desiree's demonstration shows, these overlays are hard to use, don't behave consistently, and provide little in the way of greater access.

I was just reading about Gnome dropping x support entirely in Gnome 49. Did they ever get the accessibility issues fixed with Wayland?

Hey. So most things do work fine. The settings work great! I set my hotkey to cmd+opt+tab. When I press that, the window/overlay opens and I can navigate the window with the VoiceOver cursor. This is great. However when I press the arrow keys, it makes a clicking sound, and sometimes it says something such as "Start playback selected button" when I select it using the arrow keys, and "Start playback button" when I move off of it. I assume the arrows actually select different buttons in the menu, and tab navigates through the different categories? When I press tab, the newly selected button reads. However when I press the arrows, I only hear the click from the app, and VoiceOver does not announce what I have selected this way. The only way I hear the button I’m selecting is by using the VoiceOver navigation commands.
Sometimes I do hear the VoiceOver keyboard focus change click, so it is possible that you’re already setting the keyboard focus to the relevant control, though this only seems to happen when I have just opened the overlay. When I press tab, VoiceOver seems to get lost.
I’m not sure if this is something that you can actually fix, though I assume it should be possible. My Mac app dev experience is very limited sorry about that.

"'Secretary Noem, you should resign,’ Cortez Masto said in a post on X. ‘You're head of Homeland Security and you can't take a question from a sitting U.S. Senator at a press conference? This level of abuse of power is shameful, outrageous, and is not doing anything to keep our homeland safe.’”

Senator Padilla: "If this is how this administration responds to a senator with a question, if this is how the Department of Homeland Security responds to a senator with a question, you can only imagine what they're doing to farmworkers, to cooks, to day laborers out in the Los Angeles community and throughout California and throughout the country."

“It's hard to overstate the seriousness of this.”

@jbouie has a good quick reaction video to Noem's goons hauling a US Senator away for trying to ask questions, at a press conference, about regime actions on matters well within his remit.

It's well worth a listen.

@ZBennoui I hear you. I think it doesn't matter to my calculus of getting in the streets and demonstrating. If they are going to be especially violent, it's especially important for me to be there with my neighbors. Not looking forward to possible police or military riots, but I'm not going to stay home even tho they are terrifying. I think if we're dissuaded from demonstrating this weekend, their boldness and violence goes up - both against demonstrators Sat and against everyone later.

Really cool article by @kellylford Worth remembering that as blind people we should verify twice, thrice, or however many times it takes. My principle: if I am not sure, I discard or do not post! What’s yours?
