I updated my Debian 12 server to Debian 13. I wish Windows updates were that painless. The update ran because I explicitly told it to. There were no long restarts, no "don't turn off your computer" pre-Windows screens, no surprises. Just some terminal commands, one restart (which I asked for), and that was it. Debian 12 became Debian 13. Smooth, easy, painless, and directly under my control.
Damn. Sometimes I forget how useful claude is. So I was struggling to add my classes this semester to my calendar. The Apple Calendar app on iOS is an absolute mess (for me at least) and I needed to add 3 classes, all of which had different times and dates. I decided, screw it. I'll have Claude try to add it to my account. Instad, it comes up with a better idea. It creates this .ICS file. All I had to do was open Outlook, import, boom. All my classes are on my calendar now. No catches.
I just pushed a small #NVDARC for Mac build out, featuring some small improvements to controlling a Mac via NVDA remote. Modifiers shouldn't get stuck as often anymore, as well as more keyboard shortcuts should be possible to press now, such as VO+Shift+letters. There's still more work to be done, as I can't press all VO+shift+letter combinations yet for some reason, but there's enough of an improvement here that I figured it worth updating.
Theeeere we go! One more build pushed. This one does it! Much more improvements to controlling a Mac. Left vs right modifiers are now differentiated, as well as from my testing, all VO+Shift key commands now seem to work!

Well, I finally did it! I was working on this project for a couple days now, since Saturday. Since we are in 2026, I thought I would make a montage of the best moments on TeamTalk last year, this compilation being from Dane's TeamTalk server stonercloud. I wasn't on any other TeamTalk servers. Even though I felt like we weren't on it as much this past year, I still managed to get some pretty funny moments, and quite fun conversations, and things that might make you say what the fuck? Not to mention, singing funny stuff. I'd say I have a few favorites here, but I won't go over them for spoilers obviously. With the ability to customize VoiceOver actions and add your own shortcuts, the NVDA Remote controller iOS app very quickly became one of my favorite applications. It still feels surreal, having access to my PC from anywhere, with the ability to be very productive. The only thing more surreal than that is the ability to control my Mac, that one I never expected. Huge thanks @Bri, you've made a massive difference, and I hope you continue maintaining it as long as possible.

I'm trying to figure out how to take the motherboard out of a Minisforum UM-560 Mini PC. I can get the back, the RAM, heatsink, and wireless card off, but how does one get the entire board out of this thing? I need to replace the NVMe2 drive, and it's on the side you can't access by just taking the back off.
Turns out you don't need to take the motherboard out to get to the m.2 slot after all. It's under a big ol' heatsink, which I took off, but it wasn't obvious to me, because the drive was still attached to it by thermal paste. So, I was also taking the old drive out, and didn't even notice it was there. STUPID!
Anyway, a brand new Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD has been installed, replacing the much slower 512GB Chinese whatever drive. Now I can do what I actually wanted to do with this thing in the first place.
It'd sure be nice if RAM were reasonably priced. I'd like to upgrade this box from the 16GB it came with, but it's just not practical.
I haven't actually used much Crucial stuff. When SSD's were just becoming a thing, it was mostly OCZ, which is gone. I also used their RAM in a bunch of stuff. Mostly Samsung SSD's these days, and haven't had to buy RAM in ages, since I don't build desktops for a living anymore.
Sometimes, games are like real life. For instance, it's been a long time since I played NetHack, but the player starts the game on the first level of the dungeon and has a dog with him/her (or, in later versions, maybe a cat). The pet would fight things along with the player, and it could help the player in some ways--a pet dog would never step on a cursed item, for instance, which could help the player determine whether an item is cursed. But pets have pros and cons, so, in that regard, deciding whether to use the dog when playing NetHack is a bit like a blind person deciding whether to use a guide dog. nethack.fandom.com/wiki/Pet

Doing a search in Windows Slack, there seems to be no way to get out of the search area without restarting? I don't see a close button, and escape does not clos the window. There are a lot of things Slack does really well but sometimes I get stuck in UI hell, which may be just my own misunderstanding of how it works but...
I usually turn on virtual PC cursor (it would be browse mode in NVDA world) and search for the button with B, but definitely there is a key for it now.
@menelion 1. Press Ctrl+K 2. Search for something, I searched for meta, was told no exact matches, and then pressed enter. 3. I'm now in a list, first item is messages 15. 4. Press enter and tab twice, you can now arrow through messages. 5. From here, escape either says nothing, or all unread messages in channel general read, and there is no close button when searching the virtual buffer. I'm sure I'm just missing something or going about this the wrong way.
Just to check: are you talking about the search results screen, or the search dialog?
If the former, it behaves like a view of its own, akin to a channel or DM convo. Those also can't be closed with Escape, but is it the transactional/temporary nature of a search that makes it feel like it should work differently for you?
@jscholes Yes, I think so, but I get the stanza about it being a separate entity, like a channel. Probably there should be an easy keyboard-only way to get back or at least to Home.

What are some technological examples (preferably from the somewhat recent past) of things that used to be available, and were then replaced by something strictly worse in at least one important aspect? I'm not talking about situations where users have decided to move on (you can still use Windows XP if you want), or cases that are due to a business decision of a single entity.
A few examples that come to mind are:
* Basically everything about air travel, supersonic, hassle-free / no security, standing room.
* Extremely high-quality telephony, which used to be available on analog lines, was left behind during the move to digital, and then came back somewhat with the advent of the internet.
* Low-latency communications, both one-to-one (telephony) and one-to-many (radio / TV). Same story with analog -> digital, except the internet is even worse on that score than the older digital protocols were.
* Extremely long-range mobile telephones (as far as I understand, analog and some GSM variants offered ranges far longer than achievable on LTE).
* Telephone directories, and the concept of just being able to contact basically anybody you'd like.
* WHois (being able to see the owners of any website on the internet, thanks GDPR).
* Short and unbreakable digital signatures (ECDSA still works, but only until a sufficiently powerful quantum computer is build).
* Being able to make as many copies of your credit card as you wanted (doable with MagStripe).
* Media distributed in physical form and watchable offline.
* Websites that worked with old and underpowered processors. Javascript isn't the main blocker here, forcing TLS on everybody is.
* Radio scanning and Wardriving (still a thing to some extend, but a lot of stuff is encrypted nowadays, so not as useful).
* Being able to receive radio stations from a great distance (many AM stations are no longer on AM, particularly outside the US).
* Remote work and remote in general (much more prevalent during the pandemic than now).
* Access to many substances, E.G. cocaine was once used as an anaesthetic, now you go to prison if you use it, basically no matter where you live.
* X-Ray machines everywhere, they used to be E.G. in shoe stores. That was before we knew how dangerous they were.
* Prevalent and cheap (unlicensed) doctors, though sometimes of dubious quality. Now outlawed in most countries.
We just got these nice, new electric trains here between San Jose and San Francisco a year ago, and they have smaller areas for wheelchair users, with flip-down seats that get in the way, and no seats wheelchair users can transfer into. The dirty, old trains we had before were better in those ways. Yes. I have to deal with it in my office every day. All the ones I’ve encountered also have a single physical button, which puts it into a mode where you have to press repeatedly to cycle through every floor, or wait for it to count through them and press to select, or something. Different ones work differently, and they are all far worse than just having a button for each floor. Do the ones where you are have a button?
@pesh Ah yeah. Some of the European ones have nothing. Ironically enough, the branch of one of our major blindness organizations in this city is like that. Says everything you need to know about this country I guess.
But users can't just use windows xp. I think the force change of an OS fits that situation. XP is a security risk, and the same could be said for windows 10.
