umm, yes. Yes indeed. I mean I use gemini and ask "lay out the process you will follow", which it does. The process is astoundingly long. I say do it. It takes twenty seconds to do it. By no means does it do it perfectly, but most often, it does actually work, and there's allot of writing done.

What's up with FastSM using YTDLP but saying Youtube links have "no audio" when hitting CTRL+enter? Seems weird that the player can't play its own links. Probably me missing something obvious.
@Bri Hmm. It detects the links as playable, but still says unsupported file format. Definitely progress in the right direction though I think. I just wish I knew why it was claming that the format was unsupported.

Hi @Tamasg I'm trying NVSpeechPlayer 2026 v10, I'm not sure if this is the latest version, but the voice sounds a bit different, even when using Adam, than the original SpeechPlayer. Were there some changes that could change how the overall voice quality sounds? It's hard to pinpoint it, but the voice itself sounds less harsh and consonents like P sound very short now. I see several settings in the voice dialog but I have no idea what any of them do, but they did not seem to make much of a difference. lol that's not a setting, we moved the experimental sound into the main branch because most people prefered it for the smoothness. if you really liked the sawtooth wave used by the original version just swap speechplayer.dll from v7 at eurpod.com/synths/nvSpeechPlay… - it's openable as a zip, swap speechplayer.dll from that one into yours and it'll sound like the old voice.
Will this get rid of the weird fading in on some phonemes too? Or will I have to use the phoneme editor? I do want to try to fix some stuff with US English in general, so I'm planning to look at that too.

Even with that change, I still hear it on US English. For instance, reading your latest reply here, I can hear it on words like "same," "fading," and other words with A in them.
yeah, there were like 3 missing phoneme fields: preFormantGain. , GlottalOpenQuotient, ETC. these got added in the later pack and are now tunable per vowel, in the past they would just be set to the engine default and everything got the same treatment. So this allows more flexibility but some things could have shifted with the change. Every letter now needs to define these new 3, they are very important for shaping and leaving them out in the past until now has been a disaster.
so The global eɪ tie caused issues with US sounds like “same” since it applied across regions. We’ve now limited the tie to only eɪ followed by schwa (eɪə), which should revert the US behavior back and remove the fade. Thankfully it should be a rule change only not a phoneme change. Awesome, I'll take a look. I also notice weird inconsistencies with phonemes in general with US English, not just in speech player, but in eSpeak in general. Are we stuck with eSpeak's limitations? Or can I make other changes in the phoneme editor? For instance, certain words with "ong" in them sound more like "onng" instead (with Eloquence, "onng" will produce more of an "ah" sound instead. It's like eSpeak has specific exceptions where "ong" sounds correct. Can I overwrite this for speech player? Or are we stuck with this weird inconsistency?
This is a really good observation, and you’re not imagining it. What you’re hearing isn’t specific to SpeechPlayer, it comes from how eSpeak phonemizes certain vowel + nasal combinations in English, especially around “ng”. Depending on the word, eSpeak may output slightly different vowels before /ŋ/, and that can make some “ong” words sound more like “onng” or overly nasal. Eloquence handled this differently: it didn’t rely on a generic phonemizer, but used hand-tuned rules that deliberately adjusted vowel quality before nasals. That’s why those cases often sound more natural there. The good news is that we’re not stuck with eSpeak’s output as-is. For SpeechPlayer, we can override or normalize specific IPA patterns in the language pack (for example, adjusting vowel quality before /ŋ/ or mapping those cases to dedicated internal vowel variants). We’ve already done similar overrides for other tricky cases like “fear/hear” and UK vs US differences. So while eSpeak itself has limitations, SpeechPlayer isn’t limited to reproducing them exactly — it just means the fixes live in the language/phoneme rules rather than in the core engine. You can check out our other normalization rules to get an idea for this.
If you have specific “ong” words that sound off to you, those examples are actually very helpful, because they tell us exactly which patterns to target.
ahaha darn it. Now I hear it too. On words like "beyond" - yeah, it might be really an ESpeak thing. We're not limited to it as our phonemizer, actively exploring others, but bundling any other one could drastically increase the size of SpeechPlayer as the add-on. Right now we kind of highjack Espeak from within NVDA itself, and that gives us a neat little advantage but does lock us in.
Oh and we can't forget about the "hazz bean" bug that's in some earlier NVDA and eSpeak versions... I'm still on NVDA 2024 and I heard that with Speech Player and eSpeak. I need to see if it's fixed in 2025.3, I think it might be. I'll keep using it, but also the O phoneme in words like "box" sounds like it's way overdone. Book still sounds like it's in UK english too. Support has a wrong "or" sound, this one's again on eSpeak, eSpeak keeps breaking US english and making it way worse. This used to be handled correctly, but I think they broke it in 2024 and it still sounds like that today.
thankfully "has been" is now correct, at least in NVDA's current version. That's good news. But some of these will be tricky especially as we don't want to make words like "song" sound like "sahng" either. :D
oh yeah it should, yes. It loads ESpeak silently into NVDA as well alongside it to convert the IPA, so updating your NVDA should definitely get you some changes.
but now I really will take a break from it at least for today, no more coding. I'm glad the pops/clicks are fixed, that really was the big win for the day, and to know the issue wasn't engine side, took so darn long to debug that. Oof. Tired. Hot tub time.

Ich habe mehrere Jahre Dualboot genutzt. Seit Windows 10 würde ich persönlich das nur noch versierten Benutzern empfehlen. Windows ist da eine ziemliche Schweinebacke und hat da keine Skrupel, dir z.B. nach einem Update mal kurz den Bootloader zu zerschiessen. Nicht lustig, für die " Nur-Anwender:in".
Daher, wenn möglich, Linux nach erfolgreichem Live-Test ab USB Stick beim Installieren die ganze Festplatte geben. Und falls doch noch zwingend ein Windows benötigt wird, dieses per Virtual Box o.ä. nutzen.
Das "sieht" man aber nicht vorher oder nur beim ausprobieren. Das läuft wunderbar nebeneinander, bis zu dem Punkt, wo Windows findet, es wäre mal an der Zeit, zu zeigen, wer der Donald auf der Kiste ist. Und dann tuts weh. Darum empfehle ich das für Umsteiger gar nicht mehr.
Nach meiner Erinnerung und Erfahrung musste man vor dem Einrichten des DualBoot in Windows diesen *Pseudo-Shutdown* ausschalten. Ansonsten lief das wunderbar, bis man einmal wieder Windows startete und herunterfuhr. Da es in der Standardeinstellung nicht wirklich heruntergefahren wird, kommt das System dann nicht an Grub dran....
Das ist genau das, was ich meine. Wir können mit sowas umgehen. Aber in meinem Umfeld (Computeria), die "typische" Ü60/Ü70 Nutzer:in, welche die Schnauze voll hat, von einer Firma, die sie zwingt einen guten Rechner gegen einen neuen zu tauschen... Der hätte ich früher ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken einen Dualboot empfohlen. Das kannst du denen heute nicht mehr zumuten.
Mich haben vor ca. 12, 13 Jahren auch die Verdrehungen immer wieder frustriert. Da haben Leute drauflos auf Linux umstellen wollen, weil sie das bei mir gut laufen sahen oder ich es empfohlen hatte. Sie haben sich aber vorher nicht mit den Grundlagen vertraut gemacht und meinten dann na Dein Linux funktioniert ja nicht, es bootet nicht mehr - dabei lag es halt an Windows. Und da gibts einiges in dieser Richtung...
Die Dualbootprobleme, die wir hier kurz ansprachen, kommen i.d.R. von Windows und betreffen dann wohl die meisten gängigen Linuxdistributionen. Die meisten davon arbeiten mit dem sog. Bootloader GRUB. Siehe z.B. wiki.ubuntuusers.de/GRUB_2/
@fexplorer Ich kenne aktuell (vernünftigen) keinen Drucker, der von Linux nicht erkannt und vollumfänglich unterstützt wird. Na ja, Exoten gibt es leider auch.
Nach meiner Erfahrung kann es trotzdem frickelig werden...und die automatische Treiberinstallation hat manchmal in die Sackgasse geführt. Deshalb empfehle ich vor dem Anschluß eines Druckers, sich zu informieren.
Bei Druckern scheint sich die Situation gebessert zu haben.
Aber es kann schnell unerfreulich werden, wenn man z.B. eine etwas anspruchsvollere Maus benutzen möchte, Kameras benötigt, Video- und Audioequipment oder Steuerpulte.

Die Adobe Suite ist schon gut, aber in Zeiten, in denen Kreativtäter von KI obsolet gemacht werden, ist ein Abomodell vielleicht sowieso nicht mehr zeitgemäß.
Derzeit gibt es keinen Ersatz für Photoshop für Linux, das muss man ehrlich sagen. Aber während früher Fotografen noch Taschengeld für Fotos von Frauen mit Salatgabelorgasmus im Krankenkassenblättle kriegen konnten, gibt es dank KI dafür heute nix mehr… also kann man dafür auch keine Software mehr mieten, wenn man halbwegs ökonomisch denkt.

@clv1 You’re right, the schwa rule was present, but it didn’t trigger before "rã" in pt-br because we normalize ã into a Brazil-specific nasal vowel symbol Ã, and our PT_VOWELS class didn’t include Ã. I’ve added à to PT_VOWELS (and PT_NASAL_VOWELS) in pt.yaml, so consonant + ɾ + à now correctly becomes consonant + ᵊɾ + Ã. That should fix the missing schwa before rã / ram / ran-style sequences.

Has anyone tried using BlindRSS with Bazqux Reader? After going into Settings/Providers, I chose Bazqux Reader, entered correct credentials, activated the OK button but I still am not getting articles. Is it the app or am I missing a step?
The floppy icon for save isn't going away because people don't recognize floppies. It is going away because fewer and fewer apps allow you control over when and what to save.
And that's a good thing. The concept of "saving" (as well as the OK button) only exist as historical artifacts. Nobody ever wanted them, but in the age of slow CPUs, slow HDDs, slow floppies, and single-threaded everything, there was no choice but to have them.

I'm looking for a secure Messaging app replacement for #GrapheneOS but my web searches haven't turned up any clear answers. I use Signal and love it - I'm just looking for something for SMS/MMS that isn't as unsightly as the default Messaging app, with better use of the available screen real estate, and perhaps has some basic theme and/or layout options. Any recommendations from personal experience?
I think people will get confused by the way you formulated the post "secure messaging app" that is why you will get recommendations for Delta Chat and other encrypted messengers, maybe better clarify you mean "secure SMS app" to avoid confusion, and btw I recommend you to give a try to #DeltaChat as replacement for Signal, no phone number or any data required, decentralized, good multi-device, etc.

actually, #email (#SMTP + #IMAP) can totally be used for #InstantMessaging it is not the protocols it is the specific email providers and "big fishes" like #gmail and #Outlook the ones that put extra limitations on top like graylisting etc. with #ArcaneChat and #DeltaChat you can have sub-second (#ENCRYPTED) email delivery

Wellp, I've had it with the Asus routers. I'm simply done with their absolutely useless JAVA Script-infested-and-100%-dependence to make anything in their web interface do anything. Clickable buttons that at least NVDA recognizes as such, but still majority remain useless, JFW only sees text, with no label or control state information communicated. Sometimes clicking these random clickables/words of text do things, such as the main navigation, but try to set up VLANs, more detailed WAN configurations, port forwarding, pretty much 99% of the router interface, and its useless with a screen reader. For the longest time, I was figuring out equivalent CLI commands, and writing scripts to do more advanced stuff, hacking its NVRAM settings, and BASH scripts, but I'm just done with the whole damn thing. Of course, the Netgear switch web interfaces are no better, and that makes two of my switches management useless. I was able to enable an unsupported telnet feature in one of the switches, and was able to configure VLANs there through trial and error, and reading manuals for other switches using a similar Broadcom FastPath OS stack. I managed to make that work, but yet again, another ridiculous workaround that has about as much chance of breaking in a future update, as shit has a chance to come out of the end of a biological organisms digestive system on a regular basis. So its time to find a whole new stack and rip out my entire network and rebuild it.
@jfayre Last I looked, and that was years ago, they were not in the 10Gbps game yet. Do you know if they have a device capable of dual-WAN, has at least two 10GBPS ports, but more are always preferred, and if more than two 10GBPS ports are not available, then 2.5Gbps is the minimum port speed required.
I’m seeing less blind people post on Masto as of late. And I can’t tell if it’s just because of the amount of cool people I’m following who aren’t blind or because people have left for other platforms. DOn’t get me wrong. I see posts from blind people all the time. It just feels like the number of blind people posting has dropped. Not that there are less posts from blind people in general. But maybe that’s just my field of view talking.
I think it's probably because the windows clients are falling further and further behind. TWBlue doesn't support polls. Tweesecake still has a bunch of issues and no updates in like a year. Even if people liked web clients, Enafore still has issues with notifications and not updating timelines sometimes. On top of that, Mona on IOS and mac released a new paid version, so people would have to subscribe to it; it's not a one-time purchase anymore. If FastSM ever gets off the ground, or TWBlue gets the promised updates, activity will probably go back up a little. But if FastSM becomes the won, it also supports bluesky, so we might see the community split a bit now that they have a choice.
@fastfinge Ah yes. I was missing the client issue. My iPad is my main device these days. I have a laptop, but I only use it when strictly necessary. I’m on Mona 7, but that was a one-time purchase for me. Thankfully, Fastsm looks promising. But I suspect you may be right about a future split.
@fastfinge I switched from Tweesecake to FastSM last week. FastSM now has some features that Tweesecake didn't, namely the ability to report posts/users, along with some pretty decent pole support and scheduling posts. For me, that's huge. Granted, aside from a couple trolls I haven't had to report many people, but the function's there in case it's needed, which is definitely no bad thing.
@jdking92@Rosalyn I just wish they'd get the same issue with links that tweesecake had sorted out. A lot of posts that absolutely have links it says have no links and you have to use the clipboard. I filed an issue with some approaches I think would work and an offer to make a pr, so we shall see.
I saw that issue, but I actually think the issue with links lies within some forks of Mastodon having the ability to post markdown. This absolutely breaks the entire world for some reason and it just hasn't been high on my priorities list to figure out.
@Bri@jdking92@Rosalyn Some can also just post HTML directly. Either way, when you strip the HTML, you get the link text, without the URL. Usually, the link text is the URL without https in front. But it doesn't have to be. GoToSocial, Akoma, Iceshrimp, Pleroma, Sharky, threads, Lemmy, PiFed, and literally anything other than Mastodon allow for text in the post that is a hyperlink, but does not contain the URL as the link text. Even though Mastodon doesn't allow posting like that, though, it can display that type of post. So because of the way FastSM strips HTML, it can only find links posted by another Mastodon server. Every other server type can post links that FastSM users can neither see 'nor interact with. Even Mastodon forks can do this. As someone effected daily by this issue, because it's completely and totally impossible for me to post links that tweesecake or FastSM users can interact with, no matter what I do, this is a huge priority for me. Only supporting logging into a Mastodon server account is one thing, and I get it. But the way FastSM is currently, you only support viewing posts by, and following, users who happen to also be on Mastodon. If you follow an account using literally anything else, links won't work. And it's impossible for a FastSM user to know they've followed an account on an unsupported server type. It's to the point where I avoid posting any links at all, because every single link I post gets multiple replies (sometimes as many as thirty or more) from blind users who do not understand that the client they use is at fault and in complete violation of the standards, not me. I'm one hundred percent following the standards as defined by the W3C and all of the Fediverse Enhancement Proposals. Clients that can't handle formatted links are broken. They need to be fixed. I've had to start just blocking Tweesecake users. I don't want to have to also do that with FastSM users.
@jdking92@Rosalyn@Bri To make all of this so, so much worse, every single fediverse server provides a plain text, non-html version of the post. Tweesecake and FastSM and others just refuse to use it. But if you look in the JSON, you'll find that while the content key contains HTML, _misskey_content and source.content both contain perfectly formatted, plain text versions of post content. @alexhall@jdking92@Rosalyn@Bri It's both. The libraries assume that the strings they return will be displayed in a web browser, or other HTML capable view. In fact, the content key by default contains spans and divs. However, all of the blind clients just stripped the html using a regular expression so it can be displayed in a text file, while making no attempt to account for anything that might be lost by that approach.
@alexhall@jdking92@Rosalyn@Bri And links are just the thing that blind users are noticing, because they read a post talking about a URL, try to interact with it, and it doesn't work. But I could happily post formatted lists, bold, italics, blockquotes, and both FastSM and Tweesecake would strip them out silently, and users would never know they missed anything to even complain about. I get that we don't want an HTML viewer for posts. But accessible clients need to do better than just assuming that HTML is completely unimportant and throwing it all away. They could convert the HTML to markdown. Or show the plain text version of the post that the server provides them. Or something else. But they don't. I'm sorry for ranting, but this has been making me crazy in Tweesecake for years now, and I hate that it's the same in FastSM.
@fastfinge @alexhall @jdking92 @Bri This might be a rant, but it is a top tier, informative one. As someone who's pointed the link issue out to you at least once, I'm sorry you're getting so much repeated grief about it and hope it gets taken more seriously in new clients.

If this what you say is true, and this plaintext representation of posts is indeed available in status objects, I've yet to evger find it. I'll look into it some more, because I definitely understand where you're coming from here, never mind I think the take of outright blocking FastSM/TweeseCake users is a bit hostile, I would still like to find a solution if I can

But too many users won’t accept that. If it doesn’t work with their clients, it’s inaccessible and obviously my fault.I can point to thee activity pub standard until I’m blue in the face. I can point at the json notes all day. But in the minds of most users, if their client is broken because the developers flatly refuse to abide by the standards, it’s my fault.

And that I need to go out of my way to bend over backwards for people who have been told that they’re using an incompatible and broken client. It’s a bad look for blind people, who demand that everyone else follow W3C and WCAG standards, but then use apps that don’t do so themselves. And when I point this out, it’s my fault anyway, because I just shouldn’t use completely allowed and supported features that work literally everywhere else.

If you emailed someone, and they said, “Yeah, I want to follow the accessibility standards. I need to do that some day, if I can figure it out,” you would be furious, and rightly so. Thrive, and FastSM, and every other client using mastodon.py is not following the standards. In the same way that we as blind people will turn to a developer and say, “I’m sorry, that’s not my problem. You need to be accessible.” I can expect the same thing from my fellow blind developers.
@Bri @fastfinge @alexchapman @jscholes Are your changes on master? I just pulled and don't see any other branches, but I don't work with Github that often. Git, all the time, but maybe there's something different with Github. I'm curious to get a look at exactly what's going on here.
@Bri@jscholes@alexhall@alexchapman And for the record, I did file an issue to the mastodon.py library you are all using. But was told it's an issue on the client end, not in there library. So this is, in fact, a battle I've been battling for literal years.

And I, too, have giant bugs almost every day, in almost everything I do. But my response to not following a documented standard is not "Yeah, I'll see if I can fix it at some point. Not a priority. Anyone who's upset about this is a jerk, and they should really be bending over backwards to work around the issue, and blocking people who complain endlessly that they aren't doing nonstandard things to just make it work makes them a jerk."

But I don't give sighted people a pass because of that if they develop inaccessible noncompliant software. Neither do I give blind people a pass if they develop accessible nonstandard software. Similar to how blind people become hostile when developers tell us expecting accessibility is just too much, and we should stay quiet and deal with it.

I hope we'll all remember this standard that we must all be held to the next time an app breaks accessibility and doesn't follow accessibility standards.

At the other end of the day, I've just added checks in the mastodon model to check for these plaintext copies of posts in the status object. You can try it if you like. I guarantee nothing.

Still sad, but I'm still workin on NV Speech. Did not abandon it. I've fixed all clicks in the driver, and the next version? It'll have a sample rate combo-box. I am thinking some people will like it at 11025 HZ but some might want 22050. This one will let you pick. It's important for sound quality and the default 16000 may sound too harsh on some ears who are used to Eloquence's 11025.
@fastfinge yeah, try it at 11025. I think it removes a lot of the sharp edges while still not sounding too bad. 22050 to me also sounds better than 16000, 44100 is just awful. But people will now have the freedom to choose.
@fastfinge yeah, that is surprising to me too! The benjamin thing is for sure odd. Almost like it's too squished and narrow to fit into the sample rate at that point.
Almost like the energy from the pulses is too narrow somehow? Maybe. Hmmm. If you change the sample rate on IOS, eloquence develops a weird lisp. So this tells us that whatever they're doing depends on the weird sample rate to sound good.
@fastfinge I guess the good thing is the voice parameters themselves are very easy to tune in the NVDA driver itself, at least to change the numbers for that specific voice. So it wouldn't be hard to mess with that and find a new "person" through the driver that way, then it's very easy to use elsewhere. But the driver's not a bad playground for just tuning voice characteristics itself.
@fastfinge that's where AI might be useful, maybe. If it can understand the parameter relationships better between each and tune more carefully, who knows. I partially tried that yesterday with a new "reed" voice but it sounded too close to Adam so meh, reverted it. There's probably also more frame params to control as part of the voice, since they're tied to the 47 parameters you get when you enable the "exposeExtraParams" flag in the driver code. But we wouldn't want to make a voice that sounds like PC speaker tones either or something nuts like that, so it has to be carefully set. And if you look at the key for Caleb you can see they set some of the Aspiration stuff that say, Adam leeaves alone. Things like that.
Speak for yourself! This voice I made that just makes high pitched squealing noises that causes weird harmonics in my headphones is exactly what I wanted. Now I have an on demand headache generator. Perfect for work meetings I'd rather not attend! LOL JK
@mckensie yeah, I think the trick there is, we'd have to include Espeak inside of it as well. Like, something has to do the phoneme converting. There's already Android Espeak, so this may not be hard, but it does add complexity in ever making it cross-platform like that.
Regarding my last repost: One of the counties mentioned in the list of news items after the article is like 5 minutes or less from me. Sometimes it’s embarrassing to be where I’m from. Or if not embarrassing, shameful. Book banning is just disgusting to me. I’ve learned so much from books! But that’s just it, isn’t it? They don’t want the young people to learn. God I have so many thoughts on this. Knowledge is power!
I usually don’t share stuff like this online but whatever. That’s one of the many things about Christianity, the narrative of it, that I can’t fuck with. The one and only sin was to eat from the tree of knowledge. Why is that? That seems oppressive. Reminds me of a jealous controlling parent or spouse, not a loving creator. Knowledge is power, and whoever wants to oppress you doesn’t want you to have it. Maybe that means just reading books is bucking the system.
