Some late evening hack for the next version of GLib: GPathBuf, or std::path::PathBuf but for C developers.
Basically: a mutable buffer that you can use if you're building paths programmatically. You can initialise it from a path; push and pop path elements until you're done; and then turn it into a full path.
Should reduce the string and vector manipulations that the existing API currently require.
