If anyone is interested in nuclear energy, I recommend a documentary about a project underway in Finland, which will take several generations to complete. What interests me, however, is the fact that they have hired ethnographers and semioticians to create a system of signs and warnings for people who potentially could discover this storage site after an apocalypse in a few thousand years.

Sumar saca de nuevo a la palestra el debate sobre la contradicción de que funcionarios opten a servicios sanitarios privados con dinero público, mientras los trabajadores y trabajadoras de la administración cada vez eligen menos estos servicios. Por Sara Plaza.

TIL: So #IPv6 Neighbor Advertisement has this R-flag. Guess what happens to macOS when it receives NA massage from a router without this flag on?

How can a router emit NAs without R-flag on? Ehm, ehm, NetworkManager. 🙄

Nice, it's a documented exchange format <ossf.github.io/osv-schema/>. As I was looking into how to document @RIOT_OS vulnerabilities earlier and was a bit taken aback by the complexity of CSAF <github.com/oasis-tcs/csaf>, this looks like a good alternative.

Good introduction to tensors for machine-learning and neural networks in rust, by building the operations from scratch. If you, like me, are curious what tensors have to do with neural networks (my understanding of NNs is very out of date) and you can read Rust, I think you'll enjoy this article: getcode.substack.com/p/fun-and…

Here’s Why Human Sex Is Not Binary

"Given what we know about biology across animals and in humans, efforts to represent human sex as binary based solely on what gametes one produces are not about biology but are about trying to restrict who counts as a full human in society.”

The old one imposed very wide layouts, which means you need a landscape orientation; this limited the use of the search to large desktop screens. It also limited the summary for each result to a few words; the change allowed me to increase the summary cut off from 10 words to 20 (not in the screenshot).

Sadly, it's a trade-off: information density over readability and responsiveness.

On responsiveness, there are probably options (but at higher maintenance cost), but I do agree that readability and space efficiency are often conflicting. Sadly we lack the tools and terminology to let the user navigate that (I'd like to set things to "generally crammed" just like I can set dark-mode), and even with the tools we'd be back to higher maintenance cost (with even more layouting combinations to check).

It's about time we got @themaritimegirl to 10k subscribers on #YouTube. She's been making videos for approaching 15 years now, the universe knows it should've happened a decade ago. #Retro technology, including #retrocomputer s, #vintage AV equipment, #lighting, and all manner of other neat devices from yester year. Go check her channel out: I've been watching since I was a kid, and my followers know all too well how geeky I turned out. :P

Purism announces partnership with SLNT to add security, privacy, and protection to mobile devices.

Stay strong: Desperate governments worldwide want to downright criminalize #privacy and #encryption now, using laughable pretexts like #cybersecurity causing #childabuse to literally put everyone on the planet under a permanent wiretapping mandate like we're common criminals by default.

Smartphones are especially susceptible to surveillance, and among those devices we have the least control over instead of corporations merely renting them to us: It's time for that to change!

Assigning a default server to new Mastodon sign-ups makes sense. I’ve been baffled by people being flummoxed by having to choose, but clearly having to choose is off-putting to many people who it would be great to have on board. People will learn about decentralization and other servers once they are here and some will move from the default. I welcome as many new voices as possible, with plenty of moderation for hate and large-scale commercial posts. blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/05/… @Gargron

Aiko iOS app, totally free, Hi quality transcription, all performed on your device for privacy. This app was mentioned in the latest AppleVis Newsletter, so it is totally accessible. Just know that the app is kind of large, it is 2 GB in size. Probably because it does everything on the device, and all of the languages it supports.

Description from the app store followed by the link.
High-quality on-device transcription. Easily convert speech to text from meetings, lectures, and more.
The transcription is powered by OpenAI's Whisper running locally on your device. The audio never leaves your device. You can export the transcription as subtitles too. Aiko favors accuracy over speed.
Supports 100 different languages.
The app was made possible thanks to Whisper by OpenAI and whisper.cpp by Georgi Gerganov.
■ FAQ ‣ Can I edit the text in the app? I don't plan to support any editing. Export the transcription and edit it in a proper text editor.
‣ Why is the app so large? The app delivers the highest quality transcription on the market for 100 different languages. Rather than asking why it's so large, the real question is how is it so small.
‣ Why is the transcription so slow? The favors accuracy over speed. However, performance is expected to improve in the coming months.
‣ Can I delete some of the languages to save space? This is unfortunately not possible. The model has all the languages stored together in a way that makes it impossible to remove just some languages. More FAQs on the website.
■ Technical details The app uses the Whisper medium or small model depending on available memory.
■ Support You can contact me through the feedback button in the app or at sindresorhus@gmail.com

Easy to miss in Mastodon's latest update, but the most-requested features are indeed coming "soon:"

"...quote posts, improved content and profile search, and groups. We’re also continuously working on improving content and profile discovery, onboarding, and of course our extensive set of moderation tools, as well as removing friction from decentralized features. Keep a lookout for these updates soon."
