@simon hah :) I kinda feel like I'm hearing myself talking here. I don't read with Orpheus, but my computer practically IS all I really read on, as well. I use my phone for things when Ihave to but given everything I do is 20 times faster on a computer, I tendto avoid if at all possible, rather just use a laptop
Wow, I do a lot of the stuff on a phone or an iPad these days, even reading. Sometimes I read on a computer, but not often these days. I always go the txt approach rather than making audio with something. Although, I've been wanting to.
@zersiax @simon I read at a computer for many years, probably because I used a scanner to get book pages into it to begin with. But having a child to carry about and spending months traveling day arfter day for job interviews meant I couldn't work in that way anymore. Even when I'd take a laptop on the bus or whatever, having a single earbud in and a device I could pause and resume within seconds became incredible. at nearly 800 wpm I'd get a chapter done while my daughter was using the toilet sometimes, or if I was waiting for a train connection etc without having to pull anything out of a bag.
@mcourcel @simon I use it as a backend for my own generator, but only for splitting out the content of files into chapters. They have a text extract utility which is fabulous.
Hahaha. Nah, I don't care about notifications, I stop them. I have emergency contacts, so if someone really wants to call, they have to be an emergency. I have less apps on the iPad than I do on the phone though, so only have Slack, as I can't avoid that. I can't read on a computer. Not being able to lie down and read on a computer, nope. No no no. :)

@tardis @zersiax @simon I read on a computer every single night. Laptop by the side of my bed on the nightstand, wireless keyboard on my knee, headphones so as not to disturb my wife. What's difficult about that?
Everything. I don't have a nightstand. I am mostly reading audio books nowadays, because I didn't have access to those when I was younger, and now that I do, I just enjoy. But usually when I go to bed, I sleep.

@fastfinge don't forget the authors that answer peoples questions in the author notes. shouldn't those answers be in the area where your readers comments are? or can't the author do that. I honestly don't know.
@fastfinge sometimes I honistly swair that the author notes are longer than the actual chapters. smile. I know that probibly isn't the case, but it sure feels that way.
My favourite are the chapters that are just an authors note and nothing more. (A/N: Sorry guys! I haven't updated this week. I promise the story isn't abandoned! I will update sometime in the next thirty five years, I promise!)

Even worse when the author goes back, edits a chapter to remove an author's note, and then the next chapter has another author's note referring to the previous deleted one!
The three of us should start a Harry Potter fanfic with a really interesting looking summary, and then just make every chapter a collection of author's notes. Just 150 thousand words of authors notes.
It could actually be kind of a fun art exhibit. Like, the story of an author told entirely through author's notes on their fic. But the actual fic is never written.

I’m old enough to remember when fics were posted on Usenet. They were split over multiple posts because there was a maximum number of lines for each post. So authors would say chapter 1, part 1 of 47.
I'm cursed in that regard, AO3 claims that I'm in the invite queue when I try to sign up, that I'm not in the invite queue when I'm trying to check my position in said queue, and that I don't have an account when trying to reset my password.
I have indeed tried to sign up once, but never got the signup email.

@miki Oh. Well apparently they're being absurdly gatekeepy about it and won't even let me request them. Definitely not a fan of that. Maybe you should just request an invitation from a different email, or contact support about your current one, or both.
@miki If it were me, I'd write support and let them know this is a problem, and if you don't get a reply by Wednesday, just use an iCloud alias or something. This is another great thing about having my own domain; if simon@simonj.me doesn't work, I can use me@simonj.me.

@cachondo That just can't be right. If you pull the thread on that first convo, it should line them all up from oldest to newest. I often have to do that on Masto, pull a conversation, go to bottom, pull that, close first one and then things work.

So my tool that I'm making is being made with Game Maker. Game Maker doesn't have built in Text To Speech capabilities, so I hired someone to make a DLL for GameMaker so GMS2 games can now work with NVDA, SAPI, JAWS, and a few others I never heard of! What you actually want to know is what I have to say, but you're making me wait so long to get there it's ridiculous lol
@davetaylor2112 Not at all, and you can disable reporting of landmarks in NVDA's document formatting options if you want. All the new improvement does is make the reporting more consistent, it doesn't add any additional text to the landmark information. For instance, on the NV access site we have "Navigation landmark", "Main landmark" and "Content info landmark". If you disable reporting, you can stil press D to get to those and it will, without reading that info.
@davetaylor2112 Press NVDA+control+d to open NVDA's document formatting options - in there you can enable or disable any information you might want to hear or not hear. If you setup a configuration profile for programs, eg your browser, you can save it so that some information is ONLY read in some programs or only not read in some programs.
And how does that help when I might need it one second and not the next? Frankly, you're thinking like a developer, not a user, in that you are prioratisingthe code, not the information. I hate Aria so much, it made what was once simple complicated
@davetaylor2112 Is it the reading order you are upset about? That was what you indicated in the earlier message? There is a lot of nuance to it that can take awhile to get familiar with, and everone has their own ideas, but this issue: github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue… (and the related ones linked in it) is basically a request for that.

@davetaylor2112 Also know that the reason we made the change to landmarks in the first place was because the irregularity was pointed out by users who wanted it fixed - and indeed it was actually a regression - NVDA used to read landmarks as it does now, but some of those reading cues were accidentally lost in a previous update. Just about everything in NVDA is done at user's request, not just for the developers :)
The order is one of my two big issues with NVDA, in general I still say it's the best screen reader out there, the other being loss of so many really useful addons over the years due to your breakage policy and lack of inforporation into main code, like the awsome one that made sounds for landmarks and the like
@davetaylor2112 Thanks for the complement - and yes, we are always interested in improving so feedback is welcome. With the reading order, definitely it is worth commenting on that issue I linked to as that will prompt our devs to look at it anew. We know add-on breakages are a pain, and we are working on improvements to the add-on system. I understand the rationale, and I have a comment on Git already, not that I think that is a good way of collating average user comments, again, great for developers, not so much for average users. Thank god you don't actually make us find the downloads that way lol
@davetaylor2112 We don't make you use Git - we have email, telephone support, we're here on Mastodon and on other platforms.... We use GitHub to keep track of our issues & code - it keeps it all in the one place, easy for contributors to join in as well. If you have an issue that you can articulate, we certainly encourage you to add it there because that is where developers will pick it up from & if they have a question, it's easier for them to ask you, than going through say me (Quentin).
It would definitely be worth you all commenting on github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue… to add your feedback - interested developers will see it and hopefully it will kickstart interest in the feature among those who can implement it :)

@Brynify @davetaylor2112 That's one feature I miss on Windows. I can do it on macOS, and it's great. "Checked, some title, checkbox". It's one of the first things I do on new VoiceOver setups. Having it for NVDA would be nice.
@ppatel @Brynify @alexhall You know, I'm sure that could be done, half of it used to be in an addon, but volunteers just can't keep up with that level of work for long, it all needs building into the main code
@Brynify @alexhall @davetaylor2112 I keep on going back to my desire to want a true speech and sounds manager like JAWS along with verbosity. There is absolutely nothing like it. That and proper Excel support would make me uninstall JAWS so fast that it wouldn't know what hit it in the ass.
@davetaylor2112 @Brynify @alexhall It would be helpful if we could get a roadmap on some of the major issues already listed in the issue tracker for Excel. There are some major ones here.
BUT, that's just how WE have prioritised them - anyone from the community with the skills and interest is welcome to pick up one of those P4 issues and work on it now

Basically, our belief is that a screen reader should, first and foremost, give users access to the information a sighted user sees on screen. This doesn't mean that "if a sighted user can't see it, a screen reader shouldn't provide it", but it does mean we prioritise ensuring that information a sighted user has is provided.
@KaraLG84 @davetaylor2112 @Brynify @alexhall There seems to be a philosophy pervading among some of the contributors who are actively developing or otherwise helping out with the NVDA project that, if a feature being requested isn't available to sighted people, it should be developed through an add-on. I don't want to rant about this here. But this seems less than effective.
@ppatel @KaraLG84 @davetaylor2112 @Brynify @alexhall If I open the elements list on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_… I can instantly tell that there are 2413 links - not something a sighted user has easy access to - but potentially informative in helping to know how to navigate the page. It is something which needs to be considered on a case by case basis

Reporting of many properties can be set from NVDA's Document Formatting settings - there's info (and links to the user guide) in this post: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-6… - you can set that on a per-program basis using configuration profiles: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-1… But if that doesn't match what you've got in mind, then yes, definitely do create an issue: github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue…

@ppatel @KaraLG84 @davetaylor2112 @Brynify @alexhall I just commented on that issue - it's too long to share in its entirety here, but basically: Battery life is useful for everyone. The case should be put to Microsoft, it is not a screen reader function, but if you want to make an add-on for it, go for it. Other examples cited (font information and elements list) either are available in one form or another to sighted users, or an equivalent (eg quickly navigation to the right part of a page).
Thinking, as I often do, about Stephen Hawking's voice, which began as a hardware synthesizer card connected to an Apple II and ended up as a software emulated version of that same card because he rebuffed all well-intentioned upgrades for 30 years because *it was his voice*.
