I haven't seen anybody mentioning it or even noticing it, like it's just the water we swim in now, but this month marks the fiftieth anniversary of the release of what would become a seminal, and is arguably the single most important, piece of social software ever created.

Written by Douglas McIlroy and James Hunt and released with the 5th Edition of Unix this month in 1974: diff.

My friend @gvwilson has argued, and I am absolutely ready to believe, that you can divide the entire computational universe into "has diff and patch or doesn't", and that people living without it don't even have the language to recognize how bad they've got it, how many opportunities to share and collaborate have been silently denied them.

Word processors, spreadsheets, slides? "Track changes" is _trash_ by comparison. No programmer would consent to live the way we make office workers live.

An idea for anyone with the time and energy required to moderate anything, here it goes: a blog open to anybody to post guest entries where blind users can post about everyday things achieved using tech. I imagine everything going there: somebody reading the screen of a washing machine using OCR or LLM's, somebody trying to teach others a folk song in a foreign language by jotting the lyrics down in a notepad app on an Android smartphone which crashed due to a bug; trying and succeeding or failing to book train tickets... you get the idea. Make it variet, make it international, make it interesting, modern or retrospective. Goals: 1. To motivate each other and show what is possible and what still needs solutions; 2. To evaluate which of the many technologies flowing through the market actually ended up being used and for what purpose; 3. To create an archive not just of what was available in the past but what was actually in use by people; 4. Perhaps to showcase to the wider audiences that Accessibility is not just a dull requirement to satisfy and actually helps end-users. Any takers? #Accessibility #Blind

Rough “toggle” guidelines:

1. Use `<button aria-pressed>` for immediate effect and when JS is known to exist:
adrianroselli.com/2019/08/unde…

2. Use a checkbox for submissions and when maybe no JS (PE):
adrianroselli.com/2019/03/unde…

3. Use either of above with `role="switch"` *only* when it will *never* have an indeterminate state:
adrianroselli.com/2021/10/swit…

4. Avoid Apple’s proposed `switch` attribute for now (anchor link):

Adjust as appropriate.

A comment thread on Hacker News led me to this interesting article, published in 2002 but largely written in the late 90s, about education and software: theodoregray.com/BrainRot/ I wonder if their concerns about violence in video games are justified. Unlike, say, the author of Masters of Doom (which I've read), I have no vested interest in defending such games.

Huh, I never really considered all the downsides to tildes in URLs.

I’ll say though that it does have a lot of cultural relevance both historically (gooherholes and Web sites with tildes were common in academia) and today, and such communities don’t have to abandon their hallmarks for people with no interest in them. The “unfamiliar” argument doesn’t seem relevant, because it’s only unfamiliar to people who don’t use them.

The keyboard problems could also be reasons to avoid slashes or hyphens in URLs, though I don’t think people will be convinced. Sticking only to characters common across all keyboard layouts seems unreasonably limiting.

Winter:

with really poor discovery isn’t a long term proposition.

gemini://tilde.club/~winter/gemlog/2024/6-06.gmi

I wanna be a li’l cautious here.

Many times what’s seen as “good discovery” is promoting some posts at the expense of other posts, a zero-sum game where for every winner there’s a loser. For everyone who’s shouting the loudest, there’s someone else who got drowned out. That’s also one of the unethical aspects of SEO.

Now, there can be genuinely good organization of information and communities so that people do find what they’re looking for. Forums and groups are good examples of that. That’s fine.

What I hate is stuff like Mastodon’s explore tab. The way Mastodon (and clones like Akkoma) didn’t push posts algorithmically was one of the things I really loved about it.
