Anyone with a Samsung Galaxy S24 ?

I am interested in its DNG files from the camera "expert RAW". The "visually lossless" compressed DNG files.

I have wireless headphones on so I can walk around the house and still listen to things. They look big enough that whenever someone I don't want to talk to, comes to my door, I just say 'Sorry I'm on a work call.'

Definitely, definitely no thank you.

This must be a UK thing. I have a two way camera and literally can’t imagine opening the door without knowing who is on the other side. If you won’t tell me who you are and what you want, the door stays closed and locked.

Europe generally, most people will open doors here when the doorbell rings.

We have a lot of intercoms though, and tose help. Especially in apartment complexes, which Europe has plenty of, you can't really live without one.

Once upon a time, I created a graph which analysed the @weeklyOSM outbound links, comparing the number of #Twitter and #Mastodon links.

A while later, the Weekly Team decided to not allow Twitter links anymore, as the platform needed an account to see content.

But, it is time for an updated graph!

I haven't reminded people in a while. I really recommend that people regularly download all their CSV files on their Mastodon profile in case their instance goes down (see the screenshot).

This is particularly suggested to everyone on an instance (especially big ones) for which the admin isn't transparent with finances and backup plans.

Better have a backup of your follows than suddenly losing everything!

Go to Preferences => Import/Export => Data Export => Download all CSV files you're interested in keeping

Yeah, pretty sure it was that time. There definitely were ethernet cables on the floor, and PCMCIA wifi cards. I did not have a cell phone yet 💀

Does anyone know of any widely-used open source / free software whose source code is *not* written in English? Not the programming language's keywords, but things like identifier names?
in reply to Federico Mena Quintero

here's a Wikipedia page (it took me a long time to figure out how to search from this since "language" means two things in this context)

Somehow I thought Blender would had initially a lot of Dutch, but it looks pretty clean on that front on a quick glance, apart from few comments here and there (22 years ago!).

Nassau County, NY, population of 1.5 mil, has banned masks with a vote of 12 to 0 with 7 councilors abstaining

Masked advocates for masking were cut off from speaking, & one was arrested on false charges.

The police surrounded masked speakers, intimidating them.

White supremacists in the audience wore 1776 shirts, MAGA caps, & waved an Israeli flag. They recorded everyone masked & were allowed to go over their allotted time as they issued threats.

The connections between eugenics, white supremacy, indigenous struggle, and the abject failures of the so-called left to meaningfully resist could not have been more clear.

Every single one of y'all who are silent on COVID and/or refuse to mask are complicit in the fascist gains happening now & the deaths of the poor & disabled from COVID since the so-called left joined the Nazis on refusing to mask.

I am so fucking sick of this "organization." All I hear are stupid advertisements. Do they do any real honest work, or spend all their money on stupid kids singing?
in reply to Andy

@remixman lol Some of it might go to kids, but "Most of Kars 4 Kids profits go to Oorah, a nonprofit serving Orthodox Jewish kids in New Jersey and upstate New York, with the same CEO, Rabbi Eliyohu Mintz, as Kars4Kids. " Which is certainly a bit odd along with the other practices like the Minnesota AG saying that "less than 1 percent of the money Kars4Kids raised actually went to kids in Minnesota." All of that is just not convincing to me, but they won the case in the end.
@Andy

Reminder: Mask bans give police the power to do even more racial profiling.

We asked 1,000+ attendees to mask indoors this weekend, and everyone just did. I didn’t have to stop and remind a single person the entire 3 days.

There were definitely gaps in the policy, the risk wasn’t reduced to zero, but if anyone is wondering if it’s possible for events and large gatherings to make reasonable accommodations to reduce the risk of spreading COVID, it absolutely is, we proved it, and your event should be doing it too.

Holy cow, #Transitous-based #publictransit routing has just landed in the nightly version of #GNOMEMaps, and therefore the number of cities you can get transit directions in… has gone waaaay up! It can even route through a mess like Los Angeles' multiple transit authorities, or calculate long-distance trains! :blobaww:

Big props to @mlundblad for implementing this: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-m…

In what universe does anyone want to install an app to control a fan? It's A FAN!

*Grumble* at least the stupid thing was only like $40 ... Roughly the same price as all the manual fans...

Given that broadly speaking, if you're writing a new file it should probably be done atomically, why don't language stdlibs come with this feature?
in reply to rain 🌦️

Good question! In an Electron app I've been working on for a few years, I've been using the write-file-atomic package from npm. In Rust, I guess the most widely used, well-tested implementation of the renaming part of that procedure is in the tempfile crate, but it would be nice to have a convenient way to write a file atomically with just one function call.
in reply to Matt Campbell

Check out github.com/untitaker/rust-atom…. If you don't want per-file durability then tempfile is fine.

I'm seeing @Tusky lose posts when entering more than a couple of hashtags. The lost posts don't get saved as drafts.
I've taken to tooting without the hashtags and then going back to edit the toot to add the hashtags.
Any idea what's going on?

This is the first one I did: theawkwardyeti.com/comic/kidne…

On my second one, "Bile", I tried to add emphasis to "you was mean to me" using the "em" tag. It doesn't seem to do anything for the screen reader I was using, though. theawkwardyeti.com/comic/bile/

in reply to dreaminghope

@blindbat84 That is so cool, thank you for doing this! And don’t worry about the comma pauses. I’m not sure which extension you’re using specifically, but generally extensions designed to read a page will do so pretty slowly kind of like an audiobook narrator. Screen readers do still pause for punctuation, but that pause is generally short and will get even shorter if the user increases the speech rate. This is how that comic was read out by my screen reader as an example and I actually slowed it down for this demonstration, I usually read faster than this.
in reply to Pitermach

@pitermach @blindbat84 Thank you! I have heard friends' screen readers before, but wasn't sure if the cadence would still be off at speed. I appreciate hearing the recording! I'm also going to download a proper screen reader too, per someone else's suggestion - the extension is obviously not a good imitation.

Oh look, another crash of the AMD driver. Cause by opening a web page in Firefox. Fantastic.

Did you know when using JAWS 2024, when focused within the list of running applications (JAWS Key+F10), you can find an app and press Delete. This will close down the application. Very useful if an app is running and you are having difficulty closing it.

in reply to Brian Hartgen

You can also use the delete key whilst holding alt down when pressing alt+tab to close a window, rather than releasing alt to activate it. Not in JAWS of course because of it already using Alt+del as a hotkey.

Nothing appears to be working on a new pair of 'Ear Open' earbuds.
What an absolutely fantastic headline!
If you didn't know the company was called 'Nothing', you might think someone is complaining that absolutely no part of their new earbuds works as expected!

One thing that doesn't make sense for me about this whole "Telegram is a Russian spy op" theory.

Telegram is used in Ukraine a lot. Some Ukrainians probably use it to unwittingly share information that the Russian military would find useful, like telling their friends that there are troops marching down their street right now.

If the theory was true (or at least plausible), wouldn't we expect some kind of response from the Ukrainian government? After all, if most of your citizens use a messaging app controlled by your enemy, wouldn't it make sense to ban it, or at least heavily discourage its use? There are plenty of western messaging apps that the Ukrainian government could promote, and yet, with all the intelligence and information about Russian ops that they have, they do nothing.
