The people that think collaboration can't happen remotely are also the ones who only get their ideas implemented by being loudly wrong and basically a bully. They need face to face interaction because how else will they float around, sprinkling their bad ideas, and pushing for features that both no one asked for and don't meet user's needs.

It sounds like an interesting idea, but a bit like the venerable comic book, silent cinema seems beyond me. There's an event in London for those who are interested, though.

Covid did happen, but the RNIB seemingly haven't touched this sort of research since 2017. I wish they'd move on it. the UK used to lead the way, and now we're so not. NO push for apps to be accessible, no push for live streams to have a feed (that broadcast television already does), and no progress on portable access.
[Audio description apps for people with sight loss | RNIB | RNIB](rnib.org.uk/living-with-sight-…)
in reply to Sean Randall

maybe worth reaching out to RNIB immersive media team who I know have been working in related areas in recent years.
in reply to Sean Randall

Honestly, if the idea is to watch a film with no actual diegetic sound at all and read descriptions? I'd prefer a book.
I hope i'm misunderstanding the idea. Obviously if you have some eyesight, or used to, or have an interest in the medium, you'll be more interested by default.
It souns to me like an interesting idea for a research proposal but an utterly impractical waste of time and energy, especially given people's levels of Braille literacy and reading speed contrasted with the speed of film.

If you got to pick a computer model and OS for middle school students what would you pick?

I understand some of the reasons SO many schools choose chromebooks. Low cost, durability..

Drop a macbook it might break. The chromebook works just as well before and after being dropped. Which is to say they work like they have been dropped right out of the box.

Touch pads are unresponsive, touch screen is annoying. I kind of loathe them.

But, designing computers for children isn't glamourous.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

Designing computers for children ought to be glamorous, celebrated, You will shape a generation. It's not fun, or easy at all.

Frankly, even more than the software the poor quality of the touch pad, and the jitteriness and hypersensitivity of the touch screens on most models made for school markets are making a whole generation hate laptops.

And when young people hate laptops they become phone only computer users. It's a dead end.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

Double this for disabled kids. Teaching blind children the benefits of good keyboarding is hard enough. Of the 45 touch-typing tools I explored, the ones that were usable without eyesight were so boring as to make you cry.
in reply to myrmepropagandist

Say mean things about Apple all you want, their input devices have never caused me to notice them. And that is *success* I have never thought about the touch pad on my laptops ONCE.
in reply to myrmepropagandist

unfortunately in Germany most schools have the kids work with iPads straight off. So many terrible implications…
in reply to Felicitas Macgilchrist

@discoursology

I'm so glad this idea was rejected at our school. They need to type! And those keyboard cases are NOT the same.

But worse, understanding the file system on an iPad is challenging for *me* it's designed to make you not think about it. I know I sound like an old lady but the youths need to know where their files are!

in reply to myrmepropagandist

@discoursology Most mobile devices work a little like this. I have been using Android for years now and the file system seems to be intentionally convoluted in modern devices, with every app creating their own directory tree rooted wherever the hell they want. There is no easy, straightforward way to download a podcast from your aggregator and then playing it with VLC, for instance. I don't know where the hell is anything anymore.
in reply to Molondrongo

@Molondrongo @discoursology I find this even on GrapheneOS, which is generally great. When I open the Files app, there's a sidebar item called "Documents." Is that the "Documents" directory on my phone? Nope! Does it show me all my document-type files in one place? Also nope! How does it decide what should be in there? Nobody knows!

would this be able to be run in the browser?

Then it could join the ranks of awesome web based debug tools like the godbolt compiler explorer and rust playground.

in reply to treefit

@treefit Actually the “default” version is in-browser yeah!

Since it’s written in rust ive built the gui using egui, so it can support web+native where native def has better performance but shipping a website is just so much easier so thats the default

Hence instead of going to Mars, they are turning Earth into Mars.

If you use the StationPlaylist tools, you will definitely want to make sure your support subscription for them is up-to-date.
There is a lot to like in this upcoming version.
We've been running the new version for about three weeks, all day every day.

Last year, the big feature was the modified version of the Insert Tracks dialog resulting in faster retrieval of items.
This year, there are many new improvements. I've been very proactive this year in ensuring that the developers have included functionality which is directly exposed to JAWS I can latch onto.

I'm glad to see there is a new feature I requested to support an American FM station I've been doing work for.
For users of voice-tracking, there is a huge, huge feature. I think it's huge anyway, but then, I am very particular about the way my VT's sound.
But there's a tonne of stuff in there. They will probably release in November based upon past form.

one of my real pain points with the iPhone is composing emails using the built-in mail app with #voiceover. It’s got slightly better with iOS 18, but the Misspelt Words option in the rotor still does not work. This might not be an issue for some, but for me I cannot send emails on the phone with confidence that it is written accurately and looks professional. I know there's the option of writing it in the Notes app, reviewing it and then pasting it into Mail, but come on! That's such a clunky workaround.

Is Mail any better on the iPad at all? I would quite like something that is an in between device to a laptop and a phone that I could use to quickly write emails, make additions to documents, write quick notes etc, and in that sense the iPad could be a nice fit, but if iPadOS has the same issues as the iOS versions then meh, it might not add much for me. Any thoughts?

Nineteen. Because they use #curl and the license is in there somewhere with my email address.
