If only some group of people had been warning about the risks of massive government data collection, loudly, for decades and decades
imagine then getting freaked out when the government, which holds all that data in thousands of isolated silos just decides to...be efficient. talk to other parts of government. coalesce and aggregate its data.
imagine your entire defense for doing nothing about this is that you just assumed the government would never get its shit together and use the data you let it collect
it's so WEIRD because the Republicans were staunchly against this kind of thing for so long. It's literally why the ATC only has access to paper records for gun purchases! The Repubs were terrified about this being a searchable database for the government to have control over

They have power and you don't. There is a massive power imbalance here in absence of an organized labor force.

are these incels the "lazy young men" that the Republicans think are consuming Medicare resources?
And if so, weird that they're attacking their own base???
Are any other @thunderbird users seeing the issues that @winterschon wrote about in this post? I've been seeing the high resource usage, just not quite as high (but almost as high). This is one of the reasons that I'm moving back to Emacs for my email or looking for a client that is a bit "lighter" on the resource usage.

On my Fedora laptop, when I launch Thunderbird and filter for it in htop, I see dozens of PIDs each showing around 3640 MB virt, 570 MB res, and a varying amount shr.
That is with 5 IMAP accounts, 1 CardDAV, 1 CalDAV and several (manually refreshing) RSS feeds.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and Taron Egerton's performance was top notch. I'm going to have the song Rocketman in my head all day.

🚀 Thanks for all the feedback on my German post about AI & critical thinking! I’ve just published the English version: »AI makes us humans unlearn how to think — and we mistake it for progress.«
If you care about culture, education, and how convenience can quietly erode our judgement, give it a read and let me know what you think. 👇

WordPress may be run by… that guy, but it still has a massive user base. They all need better accessibility documentation.
@rianrietveld wants to improve it, but needs sponsors:

A neat project: from Brazil, a tool to print a star map that folds into a dome! Written by a physics professor. Teachers use it to introduce children to the night sky.
It had _never_ occurred to me that, instead of simply reciting to students _yet again_ the old speech about how flat maps and flat star charts distort the sphere, you could just _fix the map_ instead and make it dome-shaped. Brilliant!
They hope to open-source soon. Uses my Skyfield library.

Many consider #Bluesky a success, but in fact its activity has steadily declined since Trump's inauguration. The #Fediverse has had similar trends. Rapid growth caused by an external event is always followed by a slow decline back to a small base of loyal users. In a world full of dopamine addiction, it's hard to be a social network without dark patterns.
This pattern correlates with news intake from past elections with a lead up during high profile events. Adoption is tough. My friends aren’t on Mastodon and beyond news or science it seems like a struggle to get information on other fun social topics like sports. Where it isn’t a mirror bot no one interacts with.
The removal of the dark patterns is wonderful tho. It feels like you can really time out because you don’t see anything interesting sometimes and that’s okay.
