I don't know about you, but I like movies that take place in a school. The best movies that have this are the school of rock, Mr. Holland's opus, stand and deliver and to a lesser degree because honestly, I found it borring, the dead poet's society. #Movies

Last weekend the Open Film Database (ofdb.cc) received another update, which included the migration from #WordPress (Blog) and #DokuWiki (Wiki) to #Drupal, front-end improvements for TV shows, improved cast editing, and more!

The #OFDb is a database for movies and TV shows with its data published under an open license (Open Database License). Everyone can participate and add more titles. The more the merrier!

Have you seen Callsheet? It’s an iOS app for movie and tv information. It’s a better version of IMDB. I finally took the time to review it. It’s awesome! Why did I wait so long? Nicely done @caseyliss !!

So a crazy thing happened. In a crime thriller film called Les chambres rouges (Red Rooms, 2023) there is a scene where the hacker protagonist is attempting to purchase a snuff film in online auction. The auction happens via IRC or IRC-like chatting environment and to my surprise there's actually me @rolle and my wife @mustikkasoppa who are one of the bidders.

1) The nickname of my wife is mistakenly written as "mustikasoppa" (with one k) but if I recall correctly she has used a mistakenly written nickname in the past
2) We are both operators and on the same IRC channel as we've been for the past 17 years

This is not a coincidence. One nickname can be made up by accident but not two with these features and definitely not in a French movie. My wife's nick "mustikkasoppa" is Finnish and means "blueberry soup".

Our IRC logs are more or less public because of open source and statistics so I presume the scene has been made with chatgpt which has scraped our nicks from the Internet so that they ended up in the movie. We still chat via IRC every day together.

The era of AI... Do your background check, folks. I'm glad this wasn't a dramatized documentary film but a complete fiction. However my wife and I are real. Mixed feelings.

Many people think that Le Ying is a loser. She’s very overweight, still living with her parents, doesn’t have a proper job, and is a doormat in almost every relationship in her life. One day, she gets into a huge fight with her sister, and leaves home to seek an independent life.

After a series of disappointments, she decides to train to become a boxer – even when everyone is laughing at her for even trying.

My thoughts

Some of the criticisms levelled at Yolo is that it’s not very funny.

Well, if you expect it to be a laugh-out-loud comedy, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

This movie is a character study of a woman who has spent most of her life pleasing or giving in to others and denying her true feelings and desires, in the faint hope that they would finally love her in return.

Somehow, subconsciously, she knew that this approach to life was the wrong one, but do not know how to live life another way. So, she mentally gives up on life … she overeats to comfort herself and doesn’t even bother to try better herself because all her efforts had been in vain before, so why bother?

When she endures a betrayal, she decides to change her life. However, because she did not change the way she approached life, she ended up in a worse place that she had been.

And this was the last straw. For the first time, she wanted to fight and not give up. Now the last three words is very crucial – it’s not about winning, it’s about not giving up on herself.

This movie beautifully shows you how she moves on from being a person who didn’t think she was important enough to fight for, to someone who who fights tooth and nail for herself – to do something that everyone said she could not.

That final battle in the ring was very important because she wanted not to just prove to herself that she could last till the end, but not give up on herself.

So, Yolo may not be the exciting comedic romp that some people want, nor does it follow the “ugly duckling becomes swan” trope, but it has an important message. If you live your life by cutting up pieces of yourself to please others in the tiny hope they will love you or appreciate you eventually, that’s the wrong approach.

Instead, always believe in yourself even if people say it’s impossible; never give up on yourself. In the end, you should not snuff out your desires or dreams so that others can live their dreams – it’s important for you to pursue yours too.

A beautiful movie, but you need to look deeper beyond the surface of “fat girl finally becomes pretty”.

Recognise them all?

Ian Failes of before and afters has an utterly fascinating article about the tests to add motion blur to Phil Tippett's stop motion dinos for Jurassic Park. While I knew of those attempts, I don't recall ever hearing that they used MORF (used in Willow) to try to make the dinos more realistic. Eventually the CG tests paved the way for a #VFX revolution

As the app that is the star of today's window has updated on my phone today, let me introduce you to Greta, the German app for audiodescription, closed captions and other forms of accessibility in movies.
It works by first downloading an encrypted, I believe, copy of the movie's audio and then when we want to watch it described or subtitled, we just start the app, let it listen to the sound around us and it will tune in at the right spot in time with the accessibility accommodations we need. Should you forget your headphones to hear the audiodescription in, you can still listen to it over the earpiece. The system is not context-aware so it can tune into the movie at a cinema or at home when watching on the Internet or on TV which gives universal access to all the accommodations. The only wish I would have is more independent cinema productions and the ability to combine multiple adjustments so that I could watch that movie with a lot of Austrian dialect in it with both audiodescription and subtitles.
Today's update brings sound amplification. If I understand correctly, you can also have the actual audio track of the movie played through your phone in sync with the original.
I believe the concept was replicated in other countries already so you might know it under another name.
