18 Years to the day that I went out and bought the final Harry Potter novel, I'm still reading fanfiction based upon the characters. I had left it all behind for over a decade when the story was finally done, but I've been drawn back in strongly over the last 4 or 5 years.
My daughter is 14 and is really looking forward to the TV series to see the characters she already knows in a different light, and a couple years back when I was still a school teacher, I was shocked to see children drawn into the world not through the books and then the movies based thereupon, but from the Fantastic Beasts / Grindelwald films, an entire 'nother entry point into the saga.
It's powerful to see that an author has gone from being a wonderful luminary around children's charities to a practically despised and hated figure over trans rights. I would also love to peep into a parallel world where Pottermania wasn't a thing and the books were modest successes, just to see how the ending would really have been without all the pressure. Part of the reason I devour the fanfiction is that I don't remember ever feeling the ending of the original stories were particularly satisfying, so seeing so many variations and outgrowths of the possibilities are a balm.
No kidding. The entire last book, I thought, was particularly bad fanfic. The one before that wasn't much better. My thought at the time was, oh well, she's going to get her money anyway. Who cares what she writes? Then all the other stuff happened.
On the back of yesterday's book anniversary, I read this almost a year ago and picked it up again this week. Enjoyed just as much the 2nd time around.
Whilst obviously not particularly original as a plot device, this was compellingly-written and I found that I was gripped rather excessively. We've been pulling on the genre at home, my daughter and I, in movies: Groundhog Day, Edge of Tomorrow, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things. TO have this motif applied to Harry worked really well. The opening death was a fantastic hook, and right through to the wholesome and satisfying end, I was very much engaged and finished with a bubble of satisfaction.

All of this!!! I love Potter, have for over 20 years now. But to read so many different offshoots of it, the world never ends for me! And I loved Fantastic Beasts! I will always love J. K. for the books she gave the world. Both Potter and Strike. I'm sad things are the way they are with people and her.

Why to bother with such complication for apps serving only a couple of users? First it's quite easy nowadays. And second, because I want to get rid of passwords and just use #passkeys .

Peertube for example focuses on videos, not user management. I am very OK that they don't support passkeys, because they implemented OpenId Connect standard to allow me use Keycloak for better login options.
