I used one of them fancy GitHub scripts, and nuked Windows Defender off my system. Why you ask? Because it was always doing its background scans. Always. Always using CPU when I don't want it to. Nope. Not dealing with this bullshit from Microsoft at all. It's gone. Off my system you go. I tried Eset (their online scanner) but it was not super accessible, so still on the lookout for an AV that lets me manually do the scan and control it, doesn't have a high flagging rate for developer .exe files and things like Accessible_output2 in TWBlu and Tweesecake (yes, stupid Eset flagged these too, argh!) - I'm just done. I'm fed up with Windows AV software. They're all false positive land these days. This is why Linux is better in every way.
@clv0 looks like (well for me anyway) it may end up coming down between Bit Defender and Vipre. Both appear to not flag packed executables as much, of course that might be a catch-22 because sometimes these things can be used by malicious actors yes, but at least it covers Trojans and a lot of the common signatures for actual viruses and ransomware.
oh, BitDefender's installer UI is inaccessible huh? Well looks like Vipre it will be. Bit Defender did not give me hope that the actual UI of the scanner is accessible if the installer itself uses some weird window I cannot even click through. By contrast, the actual Virus Scanner UI on Vipre is accessible too, though using UWP controls (so you hear the wonderful view variables told to you sometimes.) Still, better than Eset, that's for sure, and light on ram (measured ~80-200 MB at boot) Not sure, I've heard of people use Bit Defender, but also who knows if it's any good with accessibility and controls. Looks like the downside to Vipre might be phishing protection is weak. So if you're that person who clicks things through in e-mails maybe it's not so much for you. Or mis-types URLs often by accident. Not for you either as much then.
@JamminJerry looks like yeah! They really let you fine-tune when scheduled scans happen, so it's really in your control and not like Defenders always-scanning in the background that it does.
is it only for antivirus? or does it also have other things that the windows defender has? I absolutely hate windows defender, as when it is finds something when you are copying a folder, it just puts it in the quarinteen, and tells you it found a threat. well, that is great, except for not. I miss the days of popups, where it shows you what it found, where it found it, and lets you take action on it right away!
@JamminJerry yeah, if you don't do the scheduled scan (and shift+f10 to delete the quick and full one, otherwise quick is at 10 AM daily and full on Sundays at 10 PM,) you still get the auto-protection engine for malware and spyware and can optionally enable scanning compressed archives (by default this is off which was also nice, else you can manually scan something yourself.)
@JamminJerry ahah it was like $50 a year I think. So not as pricey as Mcafee or other AV, and then something like 2 years is 103, so the more years you buy up front the bigger discount you get. It also covers 3 computers which is perfect here and looks like has a Mac version too which is awesome for cross-platform. Will have to see how it works with VoiceOver, or just use it on the other 2 older Windows laptops I have here
@JamminJerry I think Defender will go into passive mode the moment it finds Vipre is installed, so at least it won't be running all the time. I personally did notice a slight performance boost not having its scheduled task for scans running always. Even if it tries to guard the percentage of CPU used when the machine is used, but still. Vipre isn't sneaky like that behind your back and I think that's what got me sold on it lol
@JamminJerry oh yeah, it was interesting because you enter your e-mail for the trial but then the download file somehow they generate has your info in it so the moment you install you don't even need to enter a product key, same with when you buy the subscription, and the 30 days gets added to it onto the same product key. I think I am going to give this a serious look. the 30 day free trial also is good too, so you can really try it out before making that subscription purchase.
not only that, a 30-day money back on the subscription, you just submit a ticket to them through their Zendesk. Again pleasantly surprised. I uninstalled it to try Bit Defender, one time, and no nag about "why are you removing us?" Ugh. Products these days.

@tinygirl @JamminJerry yeah, you shouldn't have to :) I just got so mad at it that I typed into google something like "github remove defender" and grabbed this top-result one from ionuttbara/. Probably not super smart. At all. I told it though to only delete Defender, but it shouldn't run in the background once it finds Vipre is running either so result should be the same.
@tinygirl @JamminJerry oooh yeah very curious about that. My partner's comission for the blind used Vipre as of like 2 years ago and had no issues back then, but it may have changed. There's some odd reading of items, like within the list of scheduled scans, but you can tab through and know what you're editing still so it's not bad.
@tinygirl I will be trying this out on friday, so that if I want to get it, I can get it next month, or something like that. I did download the trial installer, so I am good to go there.
@JamminJerry @tinygirl interestingly, they have two types. Advanced Security For Home, and just antivirus. The Antivirus one is a bit cheaper at $29 a year. The Advanced home gives you e-mail scanning (plugs into Outlook) as well as the firewall. The Antivirus is just, well, antivirus. What's interesting is that either you can get the triall for home security on that site and buy in there, in which case you pay $51. Or you can buy online directly, in which case you pay $19 for your first year but $60 for every year after, and can only do $60 a year from there on out, not extra years for a bit cheaper (like $103 for 2, 95 for 3) - so what an interesting marketing. vipre.com/home/vipre-advanced-…
@tinygirl even the 60 a year isn't all that bad at all. I mean you figure that is less than 6 dollars a month, so there is that. me personally that might be the rout I go, as I think you said the first year is what 19 for the first year? I will have to figure all of this out.

well, that page (for the standard "buy now") does list a 5 computer option. you just have to press enter on the little clickable dropdown to change it to 5. But! Big but: $29.99 Base Price: $82.49. So you pay $29 for year 1, $82 for year 2. Add them together? $111. So actually $7 more than the $51 / year. Wow math, weird. I guess for 2 more computers added that's not bad, if you know you'll have a lot of them at once active.
@tinygirl this is a bit confusing. I decided to just play with it now, and really mess with it over the next few days to see if this will work for me. I am only seeing the antiviaur stuff, and not the rest of things like the firewall, and such, I did get the advanced trial, so I should be seeing all the other stuff, unless with NVDA, I am not doing something right.
@JamminJerry @tinygirl yeah those tabs are hidden, you must use object navigation to go outside of the list of tabs and click that one with the mouse. I didn't see any other way to get there.
@tinygirl hmmmmm. I have lots of programs running, and this firewall says it is on, but didn't yell at me asking if I want all these programs to talk to the internet. tweesecake, station playlist studio, unigram, ETC. yet all my programs are working.
@JamminJerry @tinygirl ahaha yeah, you have to put the firewall into "learning" mode for it to yell at you about them like how Windows one does. I did that so it can add them as rules (it'll ask if you want to setup a rule for that app in learning mode)
@tinygirl ok, so if I do that, how will I deal with it yelling about a whole bunch of programs at once? I mean, if I put it into learning mode, it is going to potentually go nuts with all the things I have running, that want to talk to the internet.
@JamminJerry @tinygirl yeah, they're thankfully dialogs that appear individually so you'll just have to respond to a bunch of them one at a time. They don't appear to show up as a lot of windows until you dismiss one, the next one shows.
@tinygirl ah, ok, that is good to know. I was afraid that things would just get down right confusing. that isn't so bad. I assume right now, it is just assuming these programs are aloud to talk to the internet until I tell it other wize in standard mode.
@JamminJerry @tinygirl I will give it this, until I accepted Mist World and Tweesecake those apps really did not receive any data. So this firewall feels stronger than the Windows Defender one (which I turned off now) since it truly does block all network traffic, not just across local networks, when first encountering something unknown.
@tinygirl oh, so I still have to go turn the windows firewall off. ok. good to know. it did seem to turn off the windows antivirus. at least I think it did. lol.
@JamminJerry @tinygirl yeah thats' strange! But yeah that's slightly mis-leading I guess, as "minimize" doesn't minimize to tray as much as move the window out of the way and close doesn't close everything, or it shouldn't anyway. In task manager (the classic one) it shows me an SBAMTray.exe; process for the tray, and an SBAMSvc.exe file runs the actual security engine, they show up as system processes for me even with it closed.
@tinygirl @JamminJerry hmm that's so odd as I'm also on 10! Definitely make sure you have Active Protection is on toggle toggle button pressed set within Manage navigation radio button checked N on the UI. I think avc Mode check box checked is the one for setting it as an Antivirus? No idea as it's not a label I'm seeing described anywhere online either, but it's checked here. The tray i con would tell you though, it should show as "VIPRE AP: enabled EP: enabled FW: enabled Defs: 110989 (October 1, 2025 9:36 PM) button"

So far it's found far less of things that are harmless as harmful, so that makes me happy, and it does add a shortcut in your right-click explorer menu to any file to "scan with Vipre" so you can always check a zip file yourself before opening. I'll be curious to see how it does in virus scans. VIPRE actually scored top-tier ("Advanced+") in AV-Comparatives’ March 2025 Malware Protection test, and its business edition sat near the front of the pack in 2025 enterprise rounds. Defender also tests well, but not clearly better across the board. the company’s been under Ziff Davis (j2 Global) since 2018, if you've read CNet, PCMag, Mashable, they're all brands that big portfolio company owns.
@tinygirl well I won't be able to test that as that is why I have my c:\portable as an exception. a lot of programs I have in there get eaten by windows defender, so that is just habity that now I set that up as an exception. smile.
@JamminJerry I like this way better than what we call Malware sucks. That thing is such a royal pain in the ass to work with. I eventually just got rid of it and was just dealing with windows defender.
@tinygirl I do have a good question for you regarding VIPRE with NVDA. Right now I have the firewall in learning mode, what if a box pops up, that I don't hear what the app is, or something when it pops up, and NVDA reads it. when I tab threw, I can't see it, if I use insert+7 on the numpad all I saw was blank and insert+1 only let me see the button highlighted. how can I read the screen a bit better, so I know what exactly is going on if I miss it when it pops up? I don't know if you use NVDA or JFW. also I am noticing one possible bad thing here. if I am typing away like I am right now, when the box pops up, I might hit the space bar, while typing, but the box has popped up. the allow button is highlighted, so I hit that button without reolizing it. how do you get around that?

@JamminJerry I understand. But I'm perfectly fine with it, and haven't seen any performance degradation as a consequence of what it does. Moreover, it's more reliable than many of these third-party solutions as corroborated by independent websites. @Tamasg @tinygirl
@amir @JamminJerry @tinygirl my big problem is that you cannot control scheduled scans and what it calls "catch-up scans" without serious group policy editing, at least on Win 10. There's no "manage scan settings" or whatever on Windows 10's Defender, not sure if there is on Windows 11's. However, even if it's just 5% CPU, it's 5% CPU I don't want chewed away by Defender's constant auto-scanning, just so it could proudly notify me, "your device was scanned (X) times." It's kind of sad that now we must do all these scans constantly and real-time detection isn't considered enough. SoftwareLab blends protection, features, and price/value and tends to reward big suites (Norton/Bitdefender) which have password managers, parental controls, unlimited VPN, etc. AV-Comparatives measures block rates, false positives, and performance using fixed test sets; SoftwareLab summarizes across labs plus their own preferences.
On Win 11 2024H2, Defender scans barely move the CPU. Mine shows less than 2% during scans. Not sure if the “5% CPU is actually a broader issue. Compared to JAWS/NVDA, Defender feels light - LOL! It does have scheduled scans (via Task Scheduler), usually weekly, but controlling them isn’t super straightforward. I actually prefer it over VIPRE for accuracy. Real-time protection alone is plenty for most of us. @JamminJerry @tinygirl
Ahahaa I'll explain my obsession y'all. Recently I got this NucBox K11 mini-desktop, right? Well I've been trying to run it off my Sherpa 100 AC battery pack. Because it looks cool as heck to run a tiny mini desktop off battery and it being portable, but a desktop. In order to do this, I need to keep idle CPU utilization near 0. Keep in mind that Windows (nor Linux) know that I'm on a battery pack, and the computer is not tuned in terms of power draw to use less either when asked to boost. So I set hard CPU max caps at 60% limits, and hope to God that all programs honor the 1% minimum limit. This is where Defenders even 2% or 3% come in. Anythin that doesn't ramp up the CPU beyond its idle low state is going to get a ding from me because again, there's no physical way I can make Windows " think" it's running off the Sherpa 100AC pack. You're right about task scheduler! Ugh, hadn't even thought of to check that at the time for where it could put its scans. That could be one way to stop it, especially on systems where I still want to keep it on. Right now, I can get around 3 hours with Sherpa, when Defender scans. I tested yesterday without, it jumped up to around 4 hours, but I also at one point gave a Samsung phone a 9% charge boost on that 4-hoour runtime so not fully fair. @JamminJerry @tinygirl
Haha, wow, that’s an impressively nerdy setup 😄 I totally get it now. When you’re trying to eke every last watt out of a battery, even 2 or 3% CPU matters. Running a mini desktop off a Sherpa 100 AC is such a cool flex, but yeah, Windows doesn’t exactly care about “battery-conscious” mini-desktops. Task Scheduler is probably your best bet to tame Defender’s scans without disabling protection completely - if you still use it anyway. And wow, 3 to 4 hours on that setup is actually impressive, especially if you’re sneaking in a phone charge too! That gives me major respect for how much thought you’ve put into keeping the CPU near-zero idle. @JamminJerry @tinygirl
@tinygirl ok, I see how you can get to the different sections with ctrl+ tab, and shift+ctrl+tab, but when you do the ctrl+tab, it doesn't tell you what tab you are in, it jsut reads what ever setting you land on. interesting.,

What's funny is that ESET boasts being fully accessible with NVDA. Well, I mean, if oddly setup windows and a non-standard interface. Then yeah, it's amazing! lol
@mcourcel oh they do? wow! interesting. Yeah I could barely read my scan results, at least with the online scanner, so if that is your first entry point to the product it for sure gives zero confidence. Same with installers. Bit Defender might very well be accessible but if I need AIRA or another sighted person to get through it then just forget it lol
And this is too bad as BitDefender gets excellent test scores and I'd love to use it. However, I have to tell you that while MalwareBytes isn't perfectly accessible, their company is very receptive and responsive to receiving and addressing accessibility issues. One of their directors is Charles Opperman, who used to develop JAWS back in the day.
oh this is super delightful to know! I actually use malwarebytes when things aren't feeling right with the computer after boot, like extra sluggishness, so one in my toolbox at anytime to launch. Knowing they have someone from this A11Y space there is really neat.
In fact, when I reported some buttons that weren't being exposed to screen readers, the rep I was corresponding with said they had been fixed and that they were working for her. When I asked if she had tried using them with a screen reader, she responded as if to say, but of course I did, like, what was I thinking? She didn't say that, of course, but she definitely tried the screen with NVDA, which impressed me. Don't get me wrong; MalwareBytes does need some work. Combo boxes do work but they don't speak when they first gain focus and they have this annoying habit of putting the Close, Restore and Maximize buttoons in the tab order which is just silly and actually causes confusion when there's a different Close button right next to the Program Close button.
@Aryan oh not sure! There's so many out there. Ugh. I just grabbed one off github, but it's a very aggressive one. Like, you can tear out the entire Windows Security control panel and bits with it. github.com/ionuttbara/windows-… - there's also some that are using Powershell, ETC. Of course, Defender flags these as straight-up viruses but yet Eset and other scanners didn't, go figure, LOL
@Aryan well, it didn't actually disable UAC, unless they mean setting it down to 0, but not the registry tweak where it's fully disabled (everything runs as admin.) So not sure why, maybe that's all it changes in terms of UAC as I'm still able to run things as non-privileged by default.
figured it out. if you 7-zip the .exe file you can actually see its contents. It has a file, script_run.bat, that gets flagged by AV tools as the Trojan. LOL. and you can just read that file, its size matches what you're seeing, nothing scary, but looking at the different sections it runs a .reg that does this: "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] "ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin"=dword:00000000 "PromptOnSecureDesktop"=dword:00000000 " - so just the consent behaviors it looks like, kind of ironic, less aggressive than I expected that way for sure.
@Aryan yeah, looks like that reg script just blocks smartscreen, disables the Spector / Meltdown mitegations (in modern 10th generation and above chips this matters less or AMD Zen 3/4), and does the UAC thing, oh, and disabling virtualization-based security. The security health app gets taken out with the defender option as well it looks like? Potentially not. But it does give you several levels to run, so you can keep the other bits whilst just disabling Defender which is nice. At this point I might just say to hell with it and tear it all out fully, not like that Windows Security app is something I look at and adore every single day for what it does or is telling me. If my AV works, my AV works, if it doesn't, my AV will tell me that.
A little hint for those who may not know. On this pc, since it's the company pc and I can't install things here, I run NVDA as a portable version. Therefore, if you ever want to install an NVDA addon that you downloaded from an external source such as Sonata voices or RHVoices, Windows does not automatically guess it's an NVDA addon, it asks with which program you want to open the NVDA addon...in that case, use: Install from external source within the #NVDA addon store installed addons tab. You'll then be presented with an open file/browse dialog, after which you can select wherever you put the Sonata voices or RHVoices addon, and it'll install as it should. After you've installed stuff from external sources, just tab to the close button and NVDA will come up with the normal dialog, Addons were installed/removed...you must restart NVDA for the changes to take effect...just press enter and it'll do it's thing, now you can use the addon/s you have installed.

At the moment they have Dolphin/Supernova on here, and they insist on me using proprietory software...hides from supernova...it's laggy, and just not what I'm used to for the last 6 odd years, so I immediately quit it after the sign-in process, then launch NVDA Portable.
If they need any info from us, we're happy to chat with them - we have very strict procedures before any code is added to NVDA and it can only be done by staff - so really, it's no different to closed-source software, except that you can view our source code and verify it for yourself - oh, and it's free - that's usually a good incenstive for organisations :)
@NVAccess I'd like to report an adon in the adon store that possibly contains malware and is being flagged as malware by Windows Defender and other antivirus programs and therefore won't install. It is redundant anyway now since the thing it is built for is now included in NVDA as of the latest version. The adon in question is called "Tele NVDA Remote Assistance" by HM something (HMDorb? HMDub? something with HMD in the developer's name anyway) and I couldn't find a report feature in the store directly so that's why I'm reporting it directly in a post on Mastodon. Anyway I tried installing it myself and sure enough Windows Defender flagged it as a threat and stopped it from installing on my computer, so that's how I know it's Malware. The URL to the adon is github.com/nvda-es/TeleNVDA I strongly recommend you take a look as I think it's definitely got some sort of Malware in it. I have already reported it to Github so they can take a look on their end.
Echoing @cubic - we have looked at that & we believe it is a false positive. What is being flagged is basically the same as what was flagged in the original NVDA Remote & in our built in implementation until we reported it as a false positive and had it fixed. We have helped TeleNVDA report the false positive as well - it can just take awhile. We do actually virus check all add-ons (as well as all NVDA core code), and it's amazing(ly annoying) how often things get falsely falgged
@cubic That is good though that it is not actually harmful and that it's a false positive. I had a scare that people were downloading things with viruses in them lol. Thanks for alleviating our fears.
@cubic Not a problem, thanks for ensuring we knew! And one of the reasons we run everything through VirusTotal as well to ensure we keep on top of any potential issues - as much as possible - as mentioned, it's not perfect and there are false positives, but it's an extra line of defence to prompt manually checking.
@Aryan The first time you submit an add-on, it is manually reviewed, which usually takes 3-4 businss days - allow up to a week perhaps? Subsequent updates to THAT add-on are automatic, and generally take less than an hour - unless they are flagged by VirusTotal or CodeQL and require manual review.
@Aryan If you're submitting an update to an add-on you have previously submitted, then yes you can simply update it. If you want to submit an update to someone else's add-on, you'd need to either work out taking it over from that developer, or fork it and make it clear this is a new fork of that add-on.
Looks terrible. Developing a browser in a game engine means zero accessibility with multiple different assistive technologies. Using parts of HTML means you still need to develop an entire browser engine, or use webkit or something, meaning you're open to all of those security problems and can't really leave big tech behind. They could have at least used XHTML 1.1, meaning that you can parse it with an XML library. LUA, in fact, has a perfectly good XML library; you could parse the page in the same language as the scripts are written in...that's bound to have some advantages. And what's the point of replacing HTTPS if you're just going to re-invent all of the centralization and problems with SSL certs? This is in a super weird and awkward spot where it's both doing too much, and not enough, at the same time. Who's it for? It won't solve any of the issues with centralization, tracking, or privacy. It depends on big tech to exist. So why not just use the current web? Or if you don't like the current web, why not use something like Gemini?

@deusfigendi Hehe, yeah. 500 char limit… ElfReader was just showing basic information on Linux ELF binaries. TailPOS was a point-of-saled app – and Open Far Manager a text-based file manager like Midnight Commander, or, Farr on Windows.
@deusfigendi We were asked to name the removed apps. Unfortunately, the 500 char limit at Mastodon doesn't allow to include extensive info or links for all. Would also mean a lot more effort to write those.

Vloni touhle dobou jsem se začal chystat na důchod. Mám před sebou ještě 12 let a, s prominutím, holou prdel. Vybral jsem penzijní a zainvestoval vlastními silami.
Dva brokeři: 1) XTB, kde držím velkou většinu a kde mám pouze ETF a pomocí DCA pravidelně měsíčně vkládám hotovost a doufám, že za těch 12 let se zhodnotí.
2) eToro, kde si hraju s drobnými. Traduji akcie. Moc tomu nehovím, jen tak nějak chápu o co jde přirozenou inteligencí a všeobecným rozhledem, za přispění čtyř YouTube kanálů o investování.
A blíží se konec roku a vidím, že díky Trumpovi a jeho debilitě šly trhy do háje a když se konečně z hájů vrátily, je v háji pro změnu dolar, takže zisk nic moc. Spíš nic. Avšak ten trading, ten se mi povedl. Jsem opatrný, smrdím korunou, a i přes tu opatrnost hle, o kolik jsem překonal index S&P500. To mě těší, opravdu. Snad ten důchod nakonec nebude tak zlej.
nicméně je třeba dodat, že tohle je dobrá strategie s horizontem >10 let. Kdybych měl 5 let do důchodu, tak už v akciích na důchod nespořím. Když to pak řachne těsně před důchodem, tak to není sranda. Já jsem investice na mnoho let vyřešil stavbou domu. Máme velkou hypo, takže můžu jakékoliv přebytečné peníze sypat do ní se zhodnocením 6 % při nulovém riziku. 🙂

@Doomed_Daniel because it’s what they are used to I can see. I don’t know how much the affordability argument matters in a lot of cases. Most people finance devices through a carrier anyway. I don’t know about elsewhere in the world, but in the UK, the way carriers are offsetting the cost difference, at least on a month-to-month basis, is that most contracts for android devices are 2 years. iPhones can be 2 or 3. This sometimes, not always, actually results in the cost month-to-month being lower for the iPhone. This doesn’t factor in the extras that they like you to bundle, of course, like Netflix, Apple Music, airpods, an Apple Watch, etc.
For the people buying devices outright, yes. Affordability matters.
@Doomed_Daniel And it's the clear winner as far as afordability goes, from an international standpoint. Let us not forget that the biggest threat to alternatives has for quite some time been the FCC. IT's not simply enough for the OS-doopoly to exist, but the cost of getting circulation rights for devices with cellular radios is at or near a 5figure amount which just about kills any effort from smaller companies trying to do alternative phones.

Banking apps often require device integrity verification, and due to PSD2, many banks won't even let you log in online unless you do 2FA through their app.
ANd to think, all this could've been solved with a wireless and/or usb card-reader or similar fdevice. Obviously banks have various practical reasons to require some sort of unshakable protections to satisfy fin-tech regulations, but nowhere within fin-tech regulations does it say that the authenticity mechanism had to be the actual device in question. Making the phone quite literally do it all is the very reason we're in this quandry with no real way through other than out.
@jackf723 Those used to be options, and still are to some extend and at some banks, but AFAIK, our regs require that the external device shows you the amount and payee before you can confirm the transaction, in case the primary device is hacked and silently replaces those. This means extremely specialized devices, which are easy to lose, hard to replace, and may or may not have accessibility.
@miki Ahh, so that 's where it falls apart. Wonder how effective reinforced entry would be for that one, I.E. swipe the card once for hte authentication, then swipe again for the purchase so that the device can passively query the phone for tampering, and reject the authentication if such is suspected.
@miki In order for the external device to show the cost and payee, wouldn't it have to store that in memory? So if the primary device did silently replace those, wouldn't the device be able to tell that something isn't right if it doesn't match its own stored value?
@jackf723 Ah. the way this usually works is that the totp code / signature includes this data in the calculation, so the bank will reject the attempt if these don't match.
This would mean that the device would need to be connectible to the computer / phone, which is a huge hassle. AFAIK South Korea tried something like this once, and it resulted in an entire mess of ActiveX, having to use IE6 when the rest of the world has moved on, and the whole stack not working with newly-released devices (think smartphones).
@Doomed_Daniel Yeah I can remember when I had to actually save up to purchase my unlocked phone that I own myself like a big kid. People don't do that with iPhones, they just pay extra per month and then trade in the device every 18 months.
@Doomed_Daniel Whatever their reasons may be, I do agree with Daniel that in my opinion the general Android userbase does not use Andriod for its openness. And I really hate to admit that, because it means there won't be nearly enough backlash to get Google to walk this change back.
At least with desktop Linux it runs on most x86 computers. With open source android roms... considering how many phones are already super locked down bootloader-wise, I'm scared to see what the future looks like.
This is excellent. I didn't know about the upcoming change until I read this article but I couldn't have said any of it better. I imagine stuff like Lineage is also about to get way more popular, which means it's time to figure out what options exist for installing it completely independently.

@prism And Tailscale is making some solid progress in the cross-platform file transfer department. Even more ironic in a not-so-great way is that Android is the platform that requires a setup arguably more complex than iOS and macOS to get Taildrop working properly.

@x0 @prism Ditto can expose itself over a network. I imagine the accessing-the-clipboard red-tape on mobile is a big reason as to why there isn't a Ditto mobile app.
@JamminJerry there are several tiers of people. Those that do not sideload, those that do, and those that know about adb. There is a step between those who do not and those who do, but the step between those who do and those who are comfortable with adb is larger.
I am one that knows about ADB, but don't know much at all. I have just used it to install things on a watch, until now they have changed it to where ADB doesn't work quite that way, so you have to use an app called wair 2 installer. and way back in 2014, I did use ADB to install custom roms, but I made batch files, so I didn't mess the commands up. yes, most people aren't going to know about ADB, so for them, it will make things harder for sure. will they want to learn about it is another question, but I was just saying that technically, they aren't getting rid of side loading, they are just making it harder. I personaly don't like it, but at the end of the day, what can we do aside from politely complaining about it? make your voice heard, but don't be rude about it, as then they deffinitly won't listen.
@JamminJerry they certainly won't listen anyway, and there's only so much politeness you can afford to people making anti consumer moves while framing them in the interest of public safety.
I've used Android since the Nexus One. I've always relied on side-loading so it's super frustrating that this is getting killed. I've also genuinely enjoyed Android and never felt compelled to switch to iOS (yet). Good and bad apps exist in both platforms. So does spyware, Apple just controls the iOS spyware. iCloud has always been a pinky promise away from Apple or a third party unlocking it.
Yes, down-market Android hardware exists that doesn't work as well but I've always only had solid hardware. Nexus, Pixel, OnePlus, Nothing, Samsung have always made solid, usually inventive hardware that Apple borrows from years later. They've been fun and exciting. I can still power them on and use them. And I appreciate that the cheaper hardware enables less affluent to at least use a smartphone.
@Viduno cheaper hardware matters for those who cannot or will not finance a phone from a carrier. Here in the UK, iPhones can actually be cheaper month to month on longer term contracts.
We should probably all be using GrapheneOS and I've enjoyed using that and PostmarketOS. And I can't help but believe that we wouldn't have real alternatives like those without Android, with all its flaws. Android might disappear but if Apple controlled everything, GrapheneOS simply wouldn't exist.
and I understand the point you're making. I'm just providing examples from my own experience to illustrate that my experience does not reflect the state of Android you describe. I find value in it beyond just side-loading, although it doesn't make me happy they are eroding that value. I hope they backtrack (unlikely) and still develop distinguishing features for it (possible)

Not everyone has the time or devotion to be a tech guru. LOL. So, no, not their problem, still stupid googly's problem. I wanna sideload whatever I want without having to buy phones that may or may not still collect my data through some sensor means or whatever is in them. And if you want an android based OS, you have to wait for google to push updates to some stuff. Apparently, they are no longer fan of that, either. Plus, who knows if your custom rom/phone would be accessible? Look at the bigger picture, kindly.
Google......many devices are available without Google services or can be flashed to use Android without Google Services....this still makes the platform way more open and simultaneously secure than Apple devices.
This is exactly what I wrote to them in the feedback form (iPhone have never been an option to me because its walled garden rules; as soon as that distinction disappears, why would I use Android?). But I don't believe that feedback from nobodys could change anything.

I joined the #fediverse back in the days because I wanted an alternative. A real alternative. With a fundamentally different approach. Decentralised. Even when it hurts. (federation and decentralisation is complicated!) And I think we are on the right track. What bothers me are the people that want the Fediverse to be 1:1 copycat of centralised services and as that isn't the case declare it to be a failed experiment. I'll stay here. It's better. Is all.
Concept that shouldn't be hard to make: a fediverse Patreon/OF/etc alternative.
I don't think it needs to be or even should be its own instance patrons have to make fedi accounts on. Rather, it could just approve follows from an existing fedi account based on payment. You'd request follow to a closed-follows account, give your account handle when making payment, then get approved.
the payments situation is going to be a nightmare because it will be terribly unreliable. Even a platform like OF (or any porn site really) has to use many payment processor backends simultaneously.

Right now, I can get around 3 hours with Sherpa, when Defender scans. I tested yesterday without, it jumped up to around 4 hours, but I also at one point gave a Samsung phone a 9% charge boost on that 4-hoour runtime so not fully fair. @JamminJerry @tinygirl
