Bad thoughts were right. My instinct was spot on. It's toe cancer.
Now here's the fun part: finding a place willing and properly qualified to do the toe amputation as quick as possible. This was very easy when I lived in Madison, WI as we had the vet school at the university there. They covered everything from hamsters to horses and had the absolute latest veterinarian diagnostic and treatment equipment.
Been bounced around by vets I called, currently booked with Blue Pearl which is sort of a nationwide chain veterinary surgical / emergency hospitals.
The toe is gonna cost around $4500. annoying. Also way more than the vet school. I paid less than that for heart surgery via angioplasty (minimally invasive, through the femoral artery).
