Alright, so. I am done having my ability to do my job inhibited by my screen reader not being able to handle the fact that I have a lot of text coming into my terminal at once very frequently. So, @NVAccess what's it going to take to get this prioritized on the roadmap? Personally speaking I would up my donation to $50 a month at least to fix this, it genuinely takes so much away from my daily productivity as a professional software engineer. Others feel free to join in, maybe money talks where lots of your users don't.
At least they fixed the issue where explorer crashes every time NVDA restarts. But yes, the terminal is also a huge issue for me. I already donate monthly, but I'd be happy to throw in $500 if NVDA had some kind of bug bounty program. If this issue was solved the money would be paid back within three months or so thanks to increased productivity. I had hopes that the 64-bit alphas would fix this. But I'm sad to say they do not.
This doesn't impact me as much as it does Quinn, but it definitely does impact me. I'd also be willing to increase my donation if I knew it would get this problem fixed. I get that it's probably not a big priority because it impacts a small group of users, but it's a critical bug for those of us it does affect.
@alexhall What I don't understand is how it effecting the devs themselves doesn't get this prioritized automatically? Pretty sure I heard that running scons to build NVDA will cause this to happen on developer's machines.
I suspect, based on what I've read, the issue is that nobody is sure what's causing the problem. So it could take hours or days of developer time just tracking down the actual cause before it can be fixed. The terminal works fine in jaws, sure. But Freedom Scientific isn't exactly going to tell anyone what they had to do to make that happen.
Hi, I just experienced with Codex. It's genuinely prohibiting my work with NVDA and Windows because by the time Codex reaches 30% context window left at the status line, NVDA freezes for 2 or 3 minutes at a time with how it redraws the terminal screen. I need to control+C my work and restart the session with the unique Codex ID again to get it to behave. Then It'll work for say, 5 or 6 more commands, but then the Codex output, which includes thinking and commands run, really janks NVDA performance. Quite frankly this is unacceptable and a huge daily irritation that needs a prioritized fix. @NVAccess
This is why I use as Default Terminal Application the Windows Console Host. I only have this problem you describe with grok cli, I asume when grok displays files on screen. They weren't really interested in fixing it when I reported it to x AI.
@serrebi Think there was a reason I stopped using it. Maybe because of no paste command? Not sure. Maybe it does it have it, will definitely give it a go. I think Window titles too, with the console host it didn't write the title of my SSH host into the window's title bar? I know there was a reason I switched away from it to terminal though. @TheQuinbox @NVAccess
@Tamasg I wonder what I am doing then since I am not getting as many crashes, though I have experienced the lag for sure and it should be fixed. Perhaps I'm using old terminal which is not ideal?
@Jage Yeah, old terminal does work a lot better but you lose the ability of scrolling. That's what it was, that's right. Now I know. So if I want to copy more than the last page of text to the clipboard with NVDA +F9 to NVDA and F10 (markers), I cannot with the older console host. It only will show you the page up / page down scrollbar whereas the newer terminal lets NVDA read the entire text buffer. Sigh. What a trade-off. @TheQuinbox @NVAccess

@serrebi Ahahaha try to do a dir/b in your \window\system32 directory with that addon and watch NVDA horribly, horribly lag, can't even alt+tab away until like 10 seconds later. Wow. So it essentially reintroduces much of the same lag but maybe not as bad. The problem for me is that a lot of build commands in dev environments generate noisy output like that. Codex for sure can, not to mention it having a countdown timer that updates along with the output. Toolchains like cmake, various linters, Node, all of it can really generate output similar to a dir/b on your system32. I know it's a lot of fast scrolling output, but I do think in those cases NVDA should know that a bunch of text is coming in and only refresh buffer on a timed interval you can set, say, every 3 seconds it reads the last line but ignores any incoming text from refreshing it until no new pieces are scrolling into the terminal. I know that's a lot of refactor but ultimately it will need to happen. @Jage @TheQuinbox @NVAccess
Hey, I appreciate you trying and giving ideas for this, it helps still :) The add-on at least makes the older console host better and I didn't even know of it until now, so that's somethin'. There's just more work @NVAccess will need to put into making this better because as much as there were tried UIA improvements to the terminal experience it's clear that this needs to be a bigger refactor. @Bri @Tamasg Ah so I definitely have the old Windows Terminal, though based on all of the complaints, I'm not sure I want to change to the newer one. Absolutely agreed it needs to work though. I do seem to have similar lockups when an app, say Redditforblind, dumps a ton of text so I think it's more a large text problem than a terminal one.
What Bose is doing with the SoundTouch device is just documenting the REST API to control the device. Which something that should have been available when they released the device.

Technically the licensee and the only allowed distributor for NVDA is NetMedia, who focuses on Vocalizer and the library was never made publically available due to this.
nah, not Vocalizer, but Brailab's TTS.dll itself (compiled.) I know we discussed no source redistribution for it but what about the compiled add-on +DLL as a release on the repo? Hmm.
Yes, that's what I mean as well. NetMedia (through us) made a contract with the makers of Brailab to distribute it for Hungarian NVDA users in binary form, along with a custom addon. I've created the initial version of the addon, this was before audio device support was implemented for NVDA. The addon itself and the Brailab library was very likely leaked during the internal testing process.
Around this time, Vocalizer for NVDA was released, which provided more human-like voices. Despite the fact that we couldn't fix a lot of the dictionary entries incorrectly defined by Nuance, NetMedia started distributing it, scraping the Brailab addon entirely. So technically, NetMedia has the distribution rights.
wow, I can't believe they would prioritize the trashy Vocalizer synthesizer over something home-grown like Brailab. That to me is shameful. Vocalizer, made by non-Hungarian speakers who have zero knowledge as to the nuances of our language. I even got Multivox 4 working on Windows 11, now I'm so, so tempted to publish instructions and a recompiled setup binary for Multivox just to throw it in their face, you have no idea.
This is kind of a grey area, because the addon would have been free, so it's up to you.
BMEITT is actually working on AI versions of Profivox, but of course they don't make it available to those who would really need it and when they do, they make exclusive deals, see Jaws. Trust me, we have tried far beyond what was possible to implement a good Hungarian synth for NVDA, even going as far as doing our own, partnering with Cereproc and Meridian One, constant refusals from BMEITT, and of course a lot of business dinners, etc. The state of Hungarian TTS is quite bad right now.
so I might not remove it from Eurpod, but I won't upload it into the Wrapper repo just quite yet to distribute it together. That may be going a bit too far. And I totally feel that with Hungarian TTS. I'm still using the cracked version of Profivox 5 here with my NVDA, even though it has horrible pauses during say-all. I remember you all looked into the cost of making our own and it was well over 100000EUR which is insane, not even I could pay that if I saved my income for 15 years. Ha. I installed Hungarian JAWS the other day. I didn't see Profivox listed, but I could manually add it. Looks like they default it to Vocalizer Mariska, which is horrible. Am I wrong in this? I don't understand how Hungarian blind people are putting up with this day to day if that's true, even old problems with things like double-S are still in it.
You tell me, at least on Windows there are choices, Apple makes you suffer lol. I can't even list what's wrong with it honestly, there are just countless issues popping up every day.
I think the price of making a good synth wouldn't be as huge today, at least if you create a model. Training costs and around 40 hours of data should produce reasonably good results with Piper for example. Maybe around 10K or less would cover it.
there's another TTS I considered, and tried to hack. It is Speech Technology's Hirmondo. Do you remember that program? hírmondó? It had a very human-sounding Neural TTS engine in it. One afternoon I sat down trying to decompile the DLL a bit and write a wrapper for it. No luck yet of course, but I wish the company who made that TTS were still around.
Ah yes, I remember that one, I think you could even pick it up for around 20000 HUF in supermarkets. It was an odd one, but it was pleasant to listen to at least.
Hírmondó was built by Axelero (the [origo] / Matáv-era ISP brand) together with a Hungarian company called Speech Technology Kft.. Hungarian company registry / business-info listings show “SPEECH TECHNOLOGY Kft.” marked as “v.a.” (végelszámolás alatt = under voluntary liquidation). So what happened to them? Is that engine even purchasable today? Or is all hope for any SDK gone for it.
Ah I didn't know the Axelero connection, but I knew about Speech Tech owning it. I guess Axelero supported them financially. Later on they sold SpeakBoard with the same voices.
I doubt any SDK for it exists today, I'm not sure they were open to third-party licensing back then.
SpeakBoard! Do you know if that thing is still publically available? With the company gone, no real assets sold to another company, it's another one of those I might be able to make an NVDA driver for in the gray area zone.
Someone might have put it up somewhere, when I last checked a few years ago I found a dead link. I could never get it to work though, the registry key entries that people suggested never worked for some reason. It was SAPI only.
I found the demo yes! Sadly it's a demo though for sure, the SAPI voice is non-functional. Hmm. It's odd because LowLevel.dll and the other engine files have the same version but are clearly different in size, so the DLL behaviors and compiling changed. Having a working SAPI5 voice of that Miklos would be the easiest, but I'm somehow doubtful it's easy to have the engine expose the proper path for voice utterance.
Tbf, vocalizer sucks. Our situation here isn't any better, we have neural engine stuff, but there are starting to be NVDA issues with it, and only the union of old retired blindies can redistribute the stuff. The project is no longer paid, so imagine what will happen in two or three years, and the neural voices suck. Goodbye, old speechlab too. Now if someone cracked that for me on android, I'd be happy. I never said that. But trying to stare for five minutes into the screen while it screams licence retrieval failed in different rates while I try to change the synth ain't fun. I like old stuff. The only good thing about the Hungarian vocalizer voice at least on apple is its name. :D It sucks, short letter a long letter a, is very fun to hear while you type. We need better synths for everything, for every language etc.
@tardis Speaklab? Interesting. I wonder what the Bulgarian equivalent to our Profivox would be Honestly they're the best, but of course it's comercial, very much tied to only getting distributed by the organization that sells JAWS in Hungary, not to mention their DEX program that's a learning tool. So, Profivox is very locked down even though it's a great voice. We had WinTalker, I still have it working, ha. That one did kind of suck.
Yeah, I tried profivox on a version of jaws and the assholes never updated it, so imagine little me was frustrated... All the me were frustrated collectively, and I glared at the screen, for a long while. I have the one you did by uh, was it braillelab? I don't remember, it's cool, but my hearing sucks so I can't understand him, poor old guy. Giggles. Yeah, speechlab was, still is a sapi voice, the last nvda changes made it rate boost, but the android version was nastily plugged off the playstore, and there's a licence checker I wish someone would remove, Tyler did disassemble the DLL to increase speed, but we no longer need that because it works. Tehnically, I can't even download the neural voices because the link is broken, and they want my identification number, plus names, plus disability documents, and only then can they actually send that. Lots of crap. And last time when we tried to become members of the union after moving, they said we have to pay, and there were two months, so mom politely told them to fuck off, and then they wonder why they have no young members. LOL.
I have speechlab, if you want to make it speak broken English to you. I can send. It's old, so I am not sure if they even have copyrights, because CD distribution. Funny is they used the same crap of building for the neural engines, so that makes me think it's the same company or people who build the new ones. I mean, they are not bad, just, not for daily use. They are good if I sit down on a sofa, bother with an android phone, and read a book with a cup of tea, or hot chocolate, or something like that. You'll just have to give something that says "message me here!" because I am not sending files on here I don't think there's a way to. Haha. I also don't have dropbox and I am not a cool person. ;`
I think Wintalker to me is the same as Eloquence to a lot of people, I grew up using that screen reader and the voice was not bad. A pity they didn't really release Wintalker 4 with the female voice that they made for it, but oh well.
Tbf eloquence isn't that bad, except that, I can't understand lower frequency voices that sound like they have something in their mouth, in fact, anything that's noise reduced or weirdly boxy in some way makes me want go eww and throw either it or me out of a window. I grew on compact samantha.

Every other filter fails because people do cute things like putting asterisks in the middle of words or crap like that, or they don't use hashtags (I only know like three people on here who actually use hashtags) or whatever, but the "Hide boosts from this account" button Just Works, reliably, I don't have to fiddle with it. This is how I filter. I hide boosts, unfollow or block, those are my filters and my timeline is stuffed absolutely full of awesome stuff from interesting people.

@hub Making it Open Source would be better. But the API at least allows people to build something to keep the systems operational. It's not "the best thing" but it should be the minimum.
I've been using a mechnical keyboard for almost 10 years now, its a Lioncast one with hardware macros, which I found to be really useful when I bought it back then, since it doesn't require software and it works on any device instantaneously. I think i've got Cherry blue switches in here, they aren't quiet, but I love the feel of typing on them.
@ToniBarth Yeah, I thought there'd be mention of mechanical keyboards somewhere. What's the difference between a mechanical and non-mechanical? I know absolutely zero about the keyboard world other than I want decent multi-key capabilities and a lot of standard keyboards don't give you that. And they certainly don't tend to last ten years either.
You might want to look into gaming keyboards then, they're build to last alot of excessive use and therefore live quite a while. Non-mechanical keyboards are usually the ones you find in laptops, but also in slim keyboards like the Logitech MX keys. Usually membrane keys, means they are really flat and don't require much pressure to be used either, they are also really quiet, but you don't get the haptic feedback of mechanical keys when using them.
@ToniBarth The one you use now definitely sounds mechanical going on what I heard on TT. Unlikely to be hot swappable though, so if it's knackered in some way, probably time for a change.
@Scott Nope, that is not a thing that is common to all mechanical keyboards. That depends on the controller used and the software behind it (if there is any). Usually workspace keyboards are a bit cheaper and limit you on that, gaming keyboards, also more expensive, come with controllers that don't hold you back in that regard. Mine supports basically pressing all keys at once, if that is what you want to do. I don't recommend though.
@NicksWorld Mechanical keyboards (assuming you get a hot swappable one) are easy to modify. You can change keycaps and switches, sometimes that's done because people want to change the sound or feel, but it's also good for repairability. The K10HE model you've just been recommended has hall effect switches instead of traiditional mechanical. Technically those are more flexible, you can configure the actuation point per switch, IE decide how much you need to press before it registers the keypress. Useful in some mainstream games, but hall effect tends to be a lot more expensive and I don't remember coming across any blindy games that support it.
@Scott i could not have said it in a better way though the reason I chose the HE is because I wanted a smooth experience and this really does fit the bill.
In my opinion, lack of accessibility is the main *real* argument against the widespread adoption of Free and Open Source Software.
I reckon, if, especially European, governments and institutions really are serious about digital sovereignty, they should invest serious money (I'm talking billions with "B") into that area.

Quick, tell me which selection will be pasted if I press the middle button of my mouse.
People either remember the '90s, where applications would only have one selection; or they remember when all they did was selecting text to and from the terminal and didn't have more than two windows. Once applications started retaining their own selected text, it was all over.
You don't miss the '90s. Like Taylor Tomlinson put it: "what you miss is a time in your life where you didn't have a lot of responsibilities because nobody expected anything from you."
Wait, is it being removed (i don't keep up). I use middle click a lot.... The only thing i didn't like was that it used a second clipboard sometimes on x11 because x11 clipboard is cursed anyway.

Oh please don't! The last thing I need in my live is further incompatible behavior of my programs. No I don't use GNOME and it's already a pain to make GTK and QT applications to behave similar.
If that's going to change the default on all GTK apps I really hope for a fork without that nonsense.
If GNOME devs really want to change the default do it by shipping it as a set option but please leave the rest of us alone with that.
one of the things I caused to really use middle click paste for was opening urls in Firefox. I stopped using that years ago because the keyboard is faster...
@grimmy if an URL is not already linkified, select, right click, and Paste & Go is a great replacement; I'd rather applications implemented this, rather than re-implementing X11 selections
sure, but I'm personally in a tabbed am now so keyboard is much easier / faster for me now.
That said I wish more stuff would default to copying "clean links" and make paste special the exception not the norm. These are both things I'll be adding to @pidgin 3 at some point.
Hi @ebassi, it pastes the last highlight and if there is no highlight it pulls the info from the clipboard. There is nothing more logic than that. As you have seen from hundreds of comments on several news sites and here in the Fediverse that people are loving and using this practical and useful feature. It is perceived as a strength of Linux systems and should be retained as default. If there are any problems with it, the problems should be addressed and not the feature itself deactivated.
Hi @ebassi, the use case that you describe doesn't exist. There isn't really a risk that the user forgets the last highlight before middle-click paste. It's usually seconds between highlighting and pasting, because this feature saves time and clicks (2 clicks instead of 6), that's why people love it.
Also seriously: Please point to a place where there can be an honest discussion about this feature, with evidence/points. The pull request is blocked. Where is it possible to properly discuss it?
side quest: tell which selection will be pasted by Ctrl-V. Showing only a screenshot without telling in which window one made a copy operation last also doesn't indicate what's in the clipboard either 🤷
except one is a specific command that does not risk getting replaced when focus changes or you can forget about it, while the other is an implicit one that does

Also I came here just to say that GNOME is volunteer driven project but first thing the merge request do is stop community from discussion and why they want or don't want the said "feature".

Ich hab jetzt vpn, DNS sever mit firewall, APP blocker & nutze #ArcaneChat Fazit: umstieg auf #F-droid / Open Source lohnt sich. #smartphone
Předně bych chtěl říct, že nějaký takovýhle tool je must have do každé domácí sítě. Používám už dlouho Pi.Hole, takže mě občas překvapí, jak jiný je internet u nás doma v porovnání třeba s internetem u mého táty.
Nám Pi.Hole odfiltruje cca 20 % dotazů. Ale v době, kdy děti jely Android hry, tak to bylo klidně 60-70 %.
AdGuard jsem se ale rozhodl zkusit, protože Pi.Hole má takové ubastlené uživatelské rozhraní, tak mě zajímá, jestli bych si třeba nějak nepomohl.
Blokátor reklamy dnes považuji za jeden ze základních prvků internetové bezpečnosti. Rozšíření v prohlížečích dnes nestačí. Platí to obzvlášť pro mobily, kde může zobrazovat reklamy a šmírovat prakticky každá aplikace.
Pak napiš, jaké z toho máš dojmy. Názor někoho, kdo má dlouhodobé zkušenosti s Pi-hole mě zajímá. Můj zásadní problém s Pi-hole je, že neumí rozpoznávat klienty na protokolech DoT a DoH. Používám to i jako rodičovskou kontrolu. Nastavím dítěti na tabletu jako soukromý DNS pro něj unikátní adresu a na základě toho dotazy od něj rozpoznám. Dosáhl bych něčeho podobného, kdybych měl všechna zařízení na VPN s pevnou IP adresou, ale tomu jsem se chtěl spíš vyhnout.
Me by docela zajimalo srovnani s DNS4EU - ma vyznam se vubec potit s domacim resenim? Pi-Hole jsem pred lety zvazoval (mozna i zkusil), ale uz mam tech tamagotchi moc:D. Jedu ted kratce na EU (vlastne vsichni doma:) a zda se mi to OK.
@testmir Za mě to má pár výhod. Zrychlí se načítání webů, zvlášť pokud si na slabší lince. Navíc můžeš nastavit jiná pravidla pro sebe a pro děti. Já si třeba blokuju Facebook. Žena zase chce povolit nějaké reklamní hosty, aby fungovaly odkazy na jedné konkrétní stránce. Dětem pak zablokuješ porno, hazard, TikTok a podobně. Takže záleží jestli to chceš nějak customizovat nebo ne.
@testmir Já to mám jako rodičovskou kontrolu. Když děcka zlobí, jde YouTube a Netflix na blocklist. Na jejich tabletech. TikTok.com je zablokovaný pro všechny.
Před týdnem jsem přešel z Pi-hole na Adguard Home. Prakticky se pro nás nic nezměnilo, oba dva projekty filtrují jak mají a fungují spolehlivě. Špatně se mi porovnává co odchytli, protože přes Pi-hole nešel veškerý DNS provoz tak jako jde teď přes Adguard Home. Kdybych si měl vybrat jeden z těchto projektů, byl by to Adguard Home:
* Pi-hole je slepenec shellových a pythoních skriptů a dnsmasq a na UX webového rozhraní si člověk musí zvykat. * Adguard Home je jedna binárka s moderním rozhraním, které se mi používalo snáze. * Adguard má vlastní formát pro filtry vycházející z Adblock Plus a dá se s nimi víc kouzlit. * Pi-hole podporuje jen standardní hosts soubory. * Adguard podporuje DNS-over-HTTPS a DNS-over-TLS, což my úplně nepotřebujeme, ale je hezké tu možnost mít.

Já to beru tak, že když je to software z otevřeným zdrojovým kódem pod dohledem mezinárodní komunity, který si provozuju sám, tak mě původ zase tolik neznervózňuje.

Tonight I’m thinking about #emigration and how tempting it feels. Right now, at this moment, there’s nothing I’d like better than to just up and leave from this country that has turned into a complete and utter hellscape for any of us who still hold onto even a shred of our humanity. I’ve heard people posit that it’s relatively easy to leave, but I beg to differ. First, not only am I a person with a disability, I’m also married to another person with a disability, and I already know many countries take a rather dim view of people with disabilities popping up. Public charge, anyone? It doesn’t matter that I have guaranteed income, and Sarah is employed. So emigrating is pretty much a nonstarter. I even looked into #Canada a while ago, since I am second generation (my grandfather emigrated from Quebec), but that doesn’t give me any special perks. So, as long as I’m stuck here, I’ll just continue annoying people with my periodic shitposts.
I feel like it would take a lot of planning. I don't think it would be particularly easy, either, but I haven't really tried to look into it, so other people might know things that I don't. It would probably be somewhat easier for someone who can retire and doesn't need to worry too much about generating income, and of course the cost of living is lower in some places, and every country will have its own rules. I was reading an article about Thailand (I think) having the equivalent of assisted living facilities targeted at expats from places like the US. I was reading a post from someone trying to emigrate (I don't know what his reasons were), but his employer wasn't being supportive, so he would eventually need to find another job. I don't think I would leave, personally. Aside from the disability-related reasons you mention, I would need to figure out where to go and take the time to learn the logistics of trying to establish residency somewhere else. It would be a longer trip to visit my family, and I'd need to learn a new place and likely a new language. I'm not nearly as eager to uproot myself as I might've been when I was younger and had more energy. Sometimes I phantasize about living in a village near the ocean on an island in the south Pacific (and I know that that's oddly specific--sometimes I wonder if I had a past life like that and I'm sub-consciously remembering it, but no way to know), but it's not something that I'm likely to actually try to do.

@archos Hele, ja pouzil Android a IFTTT. Na ty desny sracce to neumi nic. Umi to postovat jen z Mastodon.social. Uz mam rozpracovanou verzi pro iphone, hlavne kvuli AI rozpoznavani ptaku, coz je na Androidu problem i s placenym IFTT. Z ios uz muzu postovat kamkoli. Tak uvidime.

Krásné dobré ráno zmrzlí mastodonti! 🙋♀️🐈🐶 Záměrně píšu zmrzlí a ne zamrzlí. V tom by byl obrovský rozdíl. A už vůbec namrzlí....Ale to zase odbočuju někam jinam na tenký led.....šmarja zase špatně....no prostě máme tady -14 a já mám po venčení asi z mozku ledovou kostku. 😂 Sira Artura už druhý den necháváme doma. Chodí se venčit stejně, jako Jeho Lordstvo. A já dneska budu v práci úplně sama! Heeeeč! Jenom teda budu muset kontrolovat skleníky, protože zlobí vytápění a já bych popřípadě musela znovu nahazovat kotel. A zítra mám volno, protože s Dcerou národa jedeme k doktorovi. Její zdravotní problémy přetrvávají a pořád nikdo neví, co jí je. Čeká nás vyšetření na gastru.
