stormdragon2976 pushed changes to the master branch of the I38 project Work on Sway support for the window lister. Unfortunately, most of the window IDs that get returned are “None” so you can’t actually select the window, but it does list them now.
In this post I start my journey in Google Summer of Code (GSoC) with KDE Eco by describing progress made on the exciting project of making remote access to the Energy Measurement Lab a reality.
I made a (well-coordinated) LED tote and crossbody bag using the technique of 3D printing translucent tiles onto tulle and inserting them through corresponding holes in the bags' front panels. I sewed long zippers in the lining of both bags to make it easy to access the interior, and attached a flexible LED string behind the tiles with hot glue. A #Pixelblaze controller inside each bag makes it easy to run synchronized patterns. I'll be writing up a "how to" guide on them for @makemagazine.

Merged in @lenemter’s blurred background greeter branch and @leolost’s branch for monitor label API in gala, which was the major blocker for finishing display settings GTK 4 porting.
Merged Jeremy’s branch to fix some stuff in display settings for arranging multiple displays. Everything is super smooth and working nicely there. Proposed a couple branches to prep for gtk4, but I have a fully working gtk4 branch so hopefully those get reviewed quickly and we can finish that port before the end of the month!
My animation branches for the dock were merged. Also a bunch of fixes and cleanups for AppCenter. Couple of things for Power settings. Very productive day today!
In power settings, when there are no connected battery devices, such as when you're using a desktop with a wired mouse and keyboard, should we show the connected devices section with a placeholder or completely remove that section? See the screenshot above for context

Thinking about putting together a hardware wishlist for our sponsors page. There’s things people ask about that I can’t test. Top of my mind is: * Fingerprint reader. I think there are some USB ones that have Linux support * UPS. I can theoretically ship support for this but it’d be nice to be able to actually test and see how one is used practically * Wacom/Drawing tablet. I should get a pen with my StarLite but it sounds like a separate tablet is significantly different
Going through old dock issue reports now and a number of these are closed by the new hide modes being in Gala. One cool thing is you can now unhide the dock along the entire display edge, which is nice since you can’t see where it is haha
And the shadows branch in Gala was merged, so if you’re in early access you should be able to choose the Wayland session from the little gear menu on the Lock Screen and run Wayland and test the new Dock starting today!
Anyways I’ve been running Wayland now and although there are still a number of things that are broken, Orca is not one of them. The screen reader does totally work at least in my limited testing
This means Gala can now position panels and docks under Wayland including with hide modes! Very exciting stuff. This is like the major piece for our Wayland session 🥳 🎉

My fun thing for today was revisiting drawing wallpaper previews in appearance settings. It's resizable, works with RTL, can handle if you use a solid color background, and can handle when you have a different wallpaper preference for dark and light mode (currently only way to set that is in dconf)
Granite, Stylesheet, and Icons are all released. Platform 8 is also released. The Sdk and Runtime are both built. Now building docker containers. I have branches staged for updating all our flatpaks to the new platform

Releasing Granite 7.5.0 today (that’s right because no major API break), likely Stylesheet 8, and preparing release notes for Icons 8. We actually did a ton for Icons 8! The release notes and list of fixed issues is fat. And then Platform 8 release will follow soon after that.

Just confirmed that latest icons with the updated cursor names no longer crash Mutter 14, so 🤞OS 8 dailies should be bootable again tomorrow. Unless there’s some new problem 😂
Funnily enough, while I have other contributors to thank for bringing attention to the cursor design, it seems like the current crash in daily OS 8 builds is due to Mutter 46’s expectations around cursor names. So I got those cleaned up and hopefully we’ll have bootable dailies again. And I’m excited to refresh the design here as well. So yeah form follows function etc
Gala build is fixed. Greeter should theoretically be fixed for mutter 46 already but some dependency seems to be pulling in something with conflicts maybe? I think that’s a 64bit time migration issue. Not sure what’s up with panel. New day new mysteries 🔎

So in addition to 64bit time transition there’s also now Mutter 46. Dailies look like they’re failing right now because of Mutter 46. I submitted a branch to fix Gala builds for 46 and make sure we’re using 46 in our CI. Greeter and Panel are the other packages affected here, so hang tight. We’ll get it sorted :) Until then there are older OS 8 builds but trying to upgrade them will almost certainly nuke your shit currently
We’re making such good progress on cleaning up our app launching story in the dock. Thanks to @leolost the dock will now focus apps which already have a window open instead of launching new windows. We have a window spread when apps have multiple windows. And I have a branch for reading the SingleMainWindow hint from the launcher entry so that we can more predictably launch new windows on middle click (solves a 3 year old bug): github.com/elementary/dock/pul…

Still just kind of "sketching" but playing with some ideas for StackSwitcher. Contrast is obviously not good here, but mostly looking at shapes and mixing flat and raised styles to emphasize selection/activation. Trying to modernize things without losing too much fidelity. Most of all I want interactive elements to feel touchable and respond in satisfying ways to changes in state

The big thing that's broken with Orca on Wayland is Orca keyboard input handling in apps that don't support legacy AT-SPI keyboard snooping. So far, that's mostly, if not exclusively, GTK 4 apps. Orca's mouse review feature, a useful thing for low-vision users, is also completely missing on Wayland.
@matt Can we please not call features that are currently in wide use without replacement "legacy"? We have nothing else to use right now (which is why GTK 4 apps don't have anything else to use).
yeah, that's a meme that got way out of control through the usual drama mill. Accessibility works in Wayland, outside of very specific bits—which are indeed important, but a far cry from "there's no accessibility altogether".
If accessibility didn't work at all in Wayland then GTK4 would not have had an accessibility API to begin with.

Merging lots of little bug fix branches, but also @leolost implemented launching dock items with Super + [1-9] which was hotly requested. The new Dock is turning out really great :)
We also merged the branches to add driver management to system settings and completely remove PackageKit from AppCenter. So that’s also big and exciting and will needs lots of testing 🎉
I realized we're using "this device" or "your computer" in a bunch of places, but you give your device a name during Initial Setup, so why not call your device by name?
Oh also we realized we were accidentally still shipping pulseaudio instead of pipewire oops. Fixed in the latest builds. Excited to get this release out. Lots of big new stuff

Inspired by @FreakyFwoof's post, I've been looking for a high quality version of this track for years. It's a piece of music from the Windows 95 Interactive CD Sampler, and all I know about it is that the file name's "transpor.wav". I believe it could be from a library music collection since the "kidworld" file is. It's ridiculously low quality, but I love the floaty spacey feel of it. BTW the Kidworld music is "It's Catching" by Helene Muddiman.

LOAD MORE used to have a white background which was the same as toots. Which made it very easy to scroll past without noticing, resulting in timeline disorientation. The change to a grey background means I haven't missed a single one today. It's also subtle enough that it's not annoying 👍

Hopefully we've recently cracked the last of the Firefox bugs with tables + display: contents in Nightly. Hopefully. However, display: contents elements still aren't focusable in any browser, which is a problem for buttons, etc.
