SourceHut and Codeberg, two code hosting sites with a strong commitment to the ideals of free software, are under attack. SourceHut, at least, doesn't know who is attacking them, though they can tell that the attacker has considerable resources (see outage.sr.ht/). Is it reasonable for us to act as if the worst case is true, i.e. that the attack is being perpetrated by Microsoft (owner of GitHub) or one of the other cloud giants, to scare us into the supposed safety of those giants?
in reply to Matt Campbell

GitLab and Gitea are the main self-hosting options of which I'm aware. You could also mirror to GitHub instead of leaving outright, if preferred.
I host my Git repositories on my own server, but as I don't have collaborators, and the contents are mostly documents, I'm taking the simple approach of bare repositories available over ssh. I've also experimented with a server-side hook that can deploy content to the Web when a commit is pushed to a specified branch.

OpenSSL's own QUIC topples over right now on 2 issues in my curl integration:

github.com/openssl/openssl/iss…
github.com/openssl/openssl/iss…

With some duct tape and rolling of the dice, it can download curl.se.

We'll s see what the OpenSSL project can do about this.

So there is a fork of Pinafore with post editing and notification sounds. It also works with some lesser known Fediverse places which is smashing! I can't find their #Accessibility stance though, but give Enaphore a try! You can't follow hashtags on it yet though and I dunno the development pace of it. enafore.social/ #Mastodon #Fediverse

This project was for a gift exchange, so I couldn't share it until now. It's a (large!) laptop bag/backpack with 100 LEDs in the front flap arranged in a Fibonacci spiral (inspired by @jasoncoon ) and diffused through a Voronoi arrangement of 3D printed translucent black PETG tiles.

I would like to share a very cool project I've been working on with a couple of other very talented developers: SVT-AV1 PSY

github.com/gianni-rosato/svt-a…

SVT-AV1-PSY is the Scalable Video Technology for AV1 (SVT-AV1 Encoder and Decoder) with perceptual enhancements for psychovisually optimal AV1 encoding. The goal is to create the best encoding implementation for perceptual quality with AV1.

We've already implemented a couple of unique features not present in mainline that do appear to produce BD-rate gains on a number of clips already!! Please check it out!

App reviews on the Google Play Store are a critical tool for both users and developers. They offer invaluable insights, guide potential users, and help developers refine their apps. Here's a beginner's guide on How to Craft an Effective Review on Google Play Store accessibleandroid.com/how-to-c… #Android #GooglePlay

Yesterday I've promised starting to fill the gaps, so let's go: Today's #AndroidAppRain at apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid brings you 9 updated and 3 added apps:

* OTG Keyboard: use Android as A BT Keyboard
* Tarifa luz: regulated electricity rate in Spain
* Units: a powerful unit-aware calculator

Webierta's To-Do Manager switched to a proper release signing key, so you have to uninstall before you can install the new release.

Enjoy your #free #Android #apps with #FDroid & the #IzzySoftRepo :awesome:

@xxv Tell me! I vividly remember an "extreme" example of that. Someone wanted a simple notification icon. So they started developing it, following "best practices", and ended up with something around 1.3 MB.

That was a "WTF moment" for them they didn't want to accept. So they scrapped the whole thing and rewrote it from the scratch, without all those frameworks. Very same functionality. APK-Size: 35 *KILO*bytes.

All my stuff is created in a simple text editor, so I also know what's inside 😉

@xxv I still remember the days when we counted apps with 100+ kB as "huge monsters" 🙈 So yes, nowadays seeing an app < 500 kB is already refreshing, as you say. But one that goes to around 250 kB or below is a real highlight-of-the-day. And actively feeding my repo (having some crawlers to watch out for stuff) I get to see a lot of apps, so I can say these little beauties are rather rare.

tax-the-rich.eu/
a EU citizen's initiative to tax the rich more so that we can take more action against global warming and social inequalities.

It currently has 100k+ total votes, but we need a lot more to make it work. France already has 130% of the needed votes (76k out of 55k), but e.g the netherlands only 2% (400 out of 20k).

I just voted as dutch citizen, but if you know anyone that would also be interested in this, please do refer them to the website!
