@debacle @valhalla I think it's almost always a good idea to define each acronym the first time it is used, in any kind of document.
In this case, bits.debian.org/2024/04/bits-f… is a fairly long text with "DPL" mentioned more than 20 times. Writing it out the first time would not take much space, and would help make the text a little bit more welcoming to newcomers.

Wow, I didn't realize NVDA terminal support was so broken that you're better off using a second screen reader from inside the terminal, meaning it has to claim some ordinary (non-screen-reader-ish) keystrokes for itself.
If I didn't already have at least one project too many on my plate, I'd look at doing some kind of custom protocol between one of the Rust terminals (e.g. alacritty) and an NVDA add-on.
Actually, at some point I want to do a push protocol between AccessKit and an NVDA add-on, bypassing UIA. Then we could implement AccessKit support in alacritty or whatever, potentially covering all platforms, while on Windows, NVDA (or an add-on) could automatically speak any text added in the latest AccessKit tree update. The AccessKit model is already rich enough to distinguish between line wrapping and hard line breaks.
@matt Have you ever considered something like ARIA but for TTY applications? This would probably have to be done with escape codes, just like modern applications can e.g. emit links and images or make terminal text clickable. The terminal is supposed to be a more accessible interface than a GUI, but the lack of semantics often makes the opposite true. It wasn't so bad when all people had to play with was ASCII, but Unicode makes the problem that much worse. I'd be a much happier man if I never had to hear the words "box slide drawing horizontal" ever again in my life.
@matt Yup, it's quite unfortunate. At least I get to use the same keys for reading my terminal across Windows and Mac though I suppose. Honestly the ordinary end user probably won't notice it's shortcomings, but power terminal users like me and Tyler definitely do.

I used Android during many years and I switched to iPhone 3 years ago. I am never going back again. ios works well and for a long time. With Android, if you use it a lot, after a year you will have to reinstall it because it is slow and memory is full. Thanks for the article

I'm not a huge social personality, but I still can't quite leave twitter behind.
Yes, there is a bigger group, but there is a quality to it: it has to do with *who* follows me there, which are leftwingers, people from the industry, activists, influencers. People who add something to my experience there and, for whatever reason, don't want to leave twitter.
My threads account is just a placeholder until federation is up and running. Looking forward to @loops as a tiktok replacement.
It's not always easy to reach a critical mass, so to speak. And now I say it, I realise the metaphor is quite apt: as different particles (people) radiate and collide (reply to each other) if the density is high enough (audience following a thread) the chain reaction (conversation) becomes self-sustaining.
@modulux This is a very apt metaphor. It is something I see happening on twitter. It more or less grows on its own.
There's an important caveat to that though, which is that if I go 'off topic', say, I post anything on supporting UNRWA, I immediately lose followers too.
Not that I care much (good riddance), but it is a reason I reframed my persona on mastodon to be broader than nuclear (although still mainly nuclear) a few months ago. Growth might be slower, but I attract the 'right' people.
That's a good point, tempted to add something about quantisation or allowed states bu it would be pushing the metaphor beyond where it can really go.
Regarding that, on one hand I would really enjoy a circle-like system where I can expose different facets of what I want to post to different groups. On the other hand, maybe it's better to aim for integrity and show a more complete form of oneself, and at this I think the fedi is good.
Can we please raise that issue with brands like Samsung and whatever others? Because for sure I couldn't delete any of the junk Samsung bloatware from my phone when I had one. That kind of ain't fair. Apple lets you remove almost all apps, in fact, unlike Samsung. There is no way I could full on wipe them out, unless I went stock Android, but that's also inaccessible, requiring quite a lot of tech knowledge too.

This piece is worth reading if you’re in tech criticism or infosec/cybersecurity and are being asked for commentary on IoT and smart home devices.
People aren’t foolish for using IoT or for wanting things to be easier in their homes. This tech makes positive and meaningful change for people of all kinds of abilities. It’s valid to worry about the privacy or security issues that IoT is riddled with, but don’t draw a direct line from there to blaming the user - some people have no alternatives that don’t involve giving up independent access to their own homes and lives. Everyone deserves to live in ways that fit their needs.
Instead, join the push to hold manufacturers and providers to account for poor security and privacy practices. Advocate for better, more respectful and accessible default configurations. Help people understand how to anticipate and mitigate the worst of these issues when they’re setting things up, and give them power and agency over their home systems.
We all deserve to have tech that works for us, in all the ways that matters.
Using one’s phone or voice to flip a light switch may be convenient since you don’t need to get up. For the author and other disabled people, this makes it accessible.
