Anyone doing a 30-year retrospective on post-CATB open source?
Let me pitch a chapter on how it's a great example of how 1990s US-style libertarian thinking led to selectively ignoring environmental factors in describing behaviours, and in doing so, promoted exactly the wrong things as the keys to successful open source projects.

@shiftingedges@hachyderm.io CATB's biggest mistake was thinking it was documenting inherent properties of open source development, rather than emergent behaviours of that moment time that needed to be maintained.social.coop
Bits from the DPL

@debacle @valhalla I think it's almost always a good idea to define each acronym the first time it is used, in any kind of document.
In this case, bits.debian.org/2024/04/bits-f… is a fairly long text with "DPL" mentioned more than 20 times. Writing it out the first time would not take much space, and would help make the text a little bit more welcoming to newcomers.

Hi from the Press Team! You are correct, sometimes we edit things and sometimes we do not, oft is is essential that the speaker speaks as intended and our edits would change the flow of the intention, so we leave them in.

Today I'm launching a project I've been working on for several months - a browsable directory of self-hosted software:
selfh.st/blog/introducing-self…
It's a supplemental tool to Awesome-Selfhosted and meant to be an alternate view focused on details that I personally find more relevant. And more importantly - it'll always be up-to-date as it's built on the dataset I use to monitor updates and releases for This Week in Self-hosted.
Feel free to reach out with feedback!

I'm not a huge social personality, but I still can't quite leave twitter behind.
Yes, there is a bigger group, but there is a quality to it: it has to do with *who* follows me there, which are leftwingers, people from the industry, activists, influencers. People who add something to my experience there and, for whatever reason, don't want to leave twitter.
My threads account is just a placeholder until federation is up and running. Looking forward to @loops as a tiktok replacement.
@modulux This is a very apt metaphor. It is something I see happening on twitter. It more or less grows on its own.
There's an important caveat to that though, which is that if I go 'off topic', say, I post anything on supporting UNRWA, I immediately lose followers too.
Not that I care much (good riddance), but it is a reason I reframed my persona on mastodon to be broader than nuclear (although still mainly nuclear) a few months ago. Growth might be slower, but I attract the 'right' people.
That's a good point, tempted to add something about quantisation or allowed states bu it would be pushing the metaphor beyond where it can really go.
Regarding that, on one hand I would really enjoy a circle-like system where I can expose different facets of what I want to post to different groups. On the other hand, maybe it's better to aim for integrity and show a more complete form of oneself, and at this I think the fedi is good.

This piece is worth reading if you’re in tech criticism or infosec/cybersecurity and are being asked for commentary on IoT and smart home devices.
People aren’t foolish for using IoT or for wanting things to be easier in their homes. This tech makes positive and meaningful change for people of all kinds of abilities. It’s valid to worry about the privacy or security issues that IoT is riddled with, but don’t draw a direct line from there to blaming the user - some people have no alternatives that don’t involve giving up independent access to their own homes and lives. Everyone deserves to live in ways that fit their needs.
Instead, join the push to hold manufacturers and providers to account for poor security and privacy practices. Advocate for better, more respectful and accessible default configurations. Help people understand how to anticipate and mitigate the worst of these issues when they’re setting things up, and give them power and agency over their home systems.
We all deserve to have tech that works for us, in all the ways that matters.

Microsoft opens a "high priority" bug ticket in ffmpeg, attempting to leech the free labour of the maintainers
Microsoft employee:
Hi, This is a high priority ticket and the FFmpeg version is currently used in a highly visible product in Microsoft. We have customers experience issues with Caption during Teams Live Event. Please help
Maintainer's comment on twitter:
After politely requesting a support contract from Microsoft for long term maintenance, they offered a one-time payment of a few thousand dollars instead. This is unacceptable.
And further:
The lesson from the xz fiasco is that investments in maintenance and sustainability are unsexy and probably won't get a middle manager their promotion but pay off a thousandfold over many years. But try selling that to a bean counter
