I loved the FinalCut Pro UI elements for entering rotation data. One neat feature is that in addition to the swipe to choose an angle, if you long-press the dial goes into high-precision input mode.

I think I finally got the animation just right:

That text is way to friendly about select().

On Linux, APIs are really not built anymore with select() in mind, i.e. the assumption is that fds are now cheap, and people throw around with fds a lot in newer apis (i.e. consider bpf apis, cgroupv2 apis, pidfds, which all use a lot of fds). This will backfire if you use select() however, badly, because of the 1K limit.

See my comments about select() here:

Welp, I got my answers and the Yen is at its weakest level in a third of a century so it looks like I'll be able to tell you how it works from a first-hand perspective in about 2-4 weeks' time.

(FreeWrite didn't appeal because it's cloud-reliant. This thing uses UTF-8 text files and an SD card. Also, I've been pining for a Pomera since I saw one in Japan in 2007. Add 18 years of incremental improvements to what is basically a Japanese business writing tool …)

I'd love a version of this for blind people, but of course the screen would need to be a speaker. Braille output would be far too expensive, but a speech synthesizer would be doable.

Listening to an episode of Terminal Talk about IBM mainframes. They're discussing open source on zos and what's the first tool they mentioned? Curl of course.

@bagder is probably used to this. Where isn't curl available?

The new Tony Blair Institute report on public sector automation savings classifies the potential to automate a task based on… how much GPT-4 classifies a task as automatable.

Is this the worst method ever? It’s absurd, unserious, and any outlet reporting on this uncritically should be humiliated and ridiculed. (seen via @halcyene)

Hey @fdroidorg, how about we replace the "Non-Free Network Services" flag with two more specific Anti-Feature flags; "Non-Changeable Network Services" and "Proprietary Network Services";

forum.f-droid.org/t/propsosal-…

#SoftwareFreedom #Android #FDroid #AntiFeatures #NetworkServices

in reply to Strypey

I adopted those names from @fdroidorg where they were agreed upon, to avoid later confusion. And for that reason I prefer to stick with them – unless F-Droid decides on some different names and puts them live.

@IzzyOnDroid
> I prefer to stick with them – unless F-Droid decides on some different names and puts them live

That's sensible. I've put my naming arguments on the forum. We'll see if anyone there cares to engage with them.

But I agree that getting the flag separation rolled out is a much higher priority. Now I know it's a WIP, any energy I put in will be to help that rollout.

Yesterday I came across an episode of a podcast I previously did not know about. I'm not a fan of podcasts generally so I do not promote them as a rule, but for JAWS users I thought this provided a lot of food for thought and some interesting ideas came out of it. I thought I may even take up one or two of them myself!

The podcast episode is called "What would you like to see next in JAWS, as a screen reader user?" You'll need to sit down with a cup of tea when this is on because it's quite lengthy, but by and large it was well put together.
I did write some comments back to the hosts, so listen to the ep and then come back and read my comments below if you would like to.
The link to the episode is here.
storage.pinecast.net/podcasts/…

Comments from me:
I came across this podcast completely by accident when browsing the local timeline of this instance and I found it an interesting discussion. I had no idea about your podcast previously.
Thank you for the one or two name checks.

Largely I agree with a lot of what Robin had to say.
1. Definitely tell the English speaking distributors to put up or shut up. That's a given. We must, must, get to this point of monthly or annual subscription.
2. Robin's phrase bank. That's a bit of an old chessnut. We've had that in Leasey for 10 years now, so I'm sure if Vispero really wanted to do that they could.
3. A script store. I see a lot of problems with that, probably quite a few you haven't thought about.
4. Repetitive text.
I honestly don't think this problem is as severe as Robin is leading us to believe. I think a lot of it is related to the fact that applications are becoming less script-dependent on the part of JAWS.
Certainly there are lots of scripts per application but often the focus now is on obtaining information directly from the app which is sending the spoken output to the screen-reader. The Microsoft Outlook calendar for many years is a real case in point.
That used to be heavily script dependent so there was a good deal of control over what was spoken and how it was spoken. Now, that doesn't happen.
So as well as plenty of additional text which noone really wants to hear, sometimes that text will be repeated due to various factors.
There needs to be plenty of communication with Microsoft and other bodies so as to allow for lots of customisation when a developer is sending messages to a screen-reader, and the model of excellence here is Zoom Conferencing, because they have made a start on exactly that. You can choose what it is you would like to be announced.

The #translation contribution guide is now available! If you want to translate #FeatherWiki into your own language to help others use it more easily, follow the instructions in CONTRIBUTING.md:

There are 2 methods included: one for those comfortable making pull requests and another for those who are not. And if you're not up for making a full translation, I'd appreciate help ensuring new translations are accurate as they are created.

Thanks in advance!

We just never learn, do we? Open source support forums should never be in proprietary environments: sooner or later they will be closed and all the shared knowledge lost.
