turns out #Windows is slow to fail connect attempts to non-listening ports entirely on purpose because it waits and resends the SYN several times, contrary to how other TCP stacks behave.
relax, #windows users are used to it. I use #emacs with the #magit #git porcelain all day, and each operation is like that: unnoticeable delay on #linux, several seconds on Windows.
I think @mildsunrise means you want the SYN to be retried if you just reached timeout without response (as both Linux and Windows do), but in this case the problem is Windows retries even when getting a RST, which is indeed a bit... unexpected.
@shaknais I'm not sure I follow... all TCP stacks retry the SYN a few times before timing out, since either the SYN or the SYN/ACK could get lost. in Linux this is controlled by the net.ipv4.tcp_syn_retries sysctl, which defaults to 6
@shaknais the thing is that Windows does not abort the process upon receiving an RST. but you do need the retry behavior, otherwise you'd be vulnerable to loss
maybe we don't trust the network? maybe we hope that the next SYN doesn't get intercepted? or even not simply intercepted and unreceived, but that RST are sent back to us by a malicious carrier and we still want to attempt SYN further in case of loss? or even not a carrier but just a malicious device in the coax hub?

This technically is true as the app is indeed free, but offline support is only for users who pay for Revolutionary and Legend. So the free isn't actually free if you plan to use offline support.

Reason (checks notes) hojillion-forty-seven to use @Vivaldi as your #browser of choice. Don't like the way your right-click menu looks/feels? Change it. I got tired of scrolling to get to the Dev Tools, so I bumped them to the top and liberated "Inspect," which I want 95% of the time anyway. While there, I got rid of everything I don't want or need, eliminating the scroll entirely.

@stepan Yeah, I wouldn't want to either. I just tested on another PC and it appears like they are not. Vivaldi's Help page for Sync states they are syncing "some Settings (more will be added in the future)," but there's no list of which settings are being synced currently.

@amir We are aware of it, and yes, do intend to see what we can do to speed that up - it is slow but generally (touch wood, and apologies about earlier) it usually gets there in the end.

@jyarbrough @FluidEscence :D keep in mine you're talking to me. I'm utterly obsessed with making my system as efficient as possible, and one of the steps for that was learning all of NVDA's keyboard shortcuts and how to write add-ons. I've also just been using it for years at this point.
@munchkinbear @FluidEscence I only got 92. Or I apparrently got 92, I don't actually remember doing the test. I did the initial certification for 2017, but my employer chose not to pay to recertify after I did it myself initially.

@mcourcel @bmoore123 It was last updated in 2022. An update will come, but I need to update the Excel module first (the exam doesn't have anything to do with Excel, just that module really needs an update). So, there will probably be a 2025 version of the exam :)

@JamminJerry @FluidEscence While the test is challenging, it's up to you where you take it - no middle of an auditorium full of other anxious students in silence with a big clock ticking up the front for this one :) If you don't pass at first, you can sit it again with no penalty (after a couple of goes, it encourages you to wait a fortnight, and consider reading through Basic Training for NVDA in the meantime). But we don't want to make anyone feel anxious, so absolutely no stress :)
@FluidEscence @alexhall @TheQuinbox There are some radio button questions (looking for the one, or in this case "the most" correct question, and some multiple answer (checkbox) questions. For the radio button ones, we tried not to include too many "wrong" answers which might also be "right"
@FluidEscence @TheQuinbox I'd argue with a couple already. For instance, the NVDA key is used for commands, but it also silences speech, which is another answer on that question.

" - So I might need to update Basic Training and the Certification exam for that :) And yes, the reason we used WordPad was because not everyone has Microsoft Office / Word - even though that's what they suggest using on the depreciation page.
