Situation dependent. For formal communication I adhere to the rules learnt from my early years.

To Whom It May Concern, if the identity of the recipient, within an organization, isnโ€™t readily known.

Dear XYZ/Gentili Signori(a) XYZ, if the recipientโ€™s identity is known.

Hi โ€” for follow up correspondences to the Dear XYZ recipient.

For all other informal communications, I adhere to no rules and simply go with whatever comes to mind. For example: Hey, Ciao, Bonjour etc

Isnโ€™t it interesting how quickly Facebook rolled out a fix for a minor visual glitch, yet doesnโ€™t bother when there are major issues for screen reader users. On iOS, it is still not possible to hear Voiceover feedback when typing a new post, and I believe that problem has existed for months on Android.
I think that sums up FBโ€™s attitude towards accessibility quite neatly, and they are far from alone in this.

Unmute Presents Jaws Tip: Quickly resetting to Factory Defaults

This episode covers troubleshooting software settings, focusing on the JAWS screen reader. It demonstrates how restoring JAWS to factory defaults can help identify if custom settings are causing issues. The host shows how different settings affect the speed and verbosity of JAWS, highlighting the importance of this initial step when troubleshooting. This simple technique can often resolve issues withoutโ€ฆ

Scouting some photo forum and the section about "post your pictures" have things like broken embeds, long gone hosting, photobucket watermarks. etc.

The internet is so fucking ephemeral.

Yesterday, I provided a link to a great article on the blindness leadership issue from Emma Bennison, and shared some thoughts of my own.
Iโ€™ve become aware that some people have had difficulty accessing her article on LinkedIn. I have also had additional thoughts on the wider topic of blind leadership, expanding upon the remarks I made when I shared her post.
I have written a detailed article on this important question, and with Emmaโ€™s permission, have included her article on the same page. I hope this helps this issue reach the widest possible audience. This truly is so important.

One of our friends is in an abusive situation rn and is looking for information about internet and phone data usage monitoring. Specifically how internet, mobile data, or mobile hotspot usage might be monitored by someone with access to the home wifi router, and to what extent it might be monitored, as in what each record might contain (like full url or ip address or domain), and how long each record might last before being deleted. They're also concerned about what information might be accessible through their phone bill if someone else is paying it.

Please boost this for reach! We really care about them and want this post to reach people who might have the answers they're looking for!!

in reply to Aubrey (Zora โšก๏ธ)

A tech-savvy person with access to the WiFi router can definitely capture IP addresses and probably most, if not practically all, domain names. Probably not full URLs though, since most sites these days are on HTTPS. If the abuser has replaced the software on their router, they could keep the records as long as they want. I don't know how long the stock software on popular WiFi routers keeps such records, if it does. Disclaimer: operations security is not my specialty.
in reply to Matt Campbell

Perhaps you already know this, but if the abuser has had sufficient access to your friend's computer/device to install software on it, then the abuser can monitor everything, despite the widespread use of HTTPS. All major platforms allow custom root certificates to be installed, since some corporate networks require that. So the abuser could install a custom root cert and then interpose a snooping program as a "man in the middle".

If you're looking to explore other career options as an adult, what are some good non-governmental/agency, non-disability focused ways of doing that?

This mass layoff was a first for me, and 2 others in our alumni Slack claim this is their third layoff in a row. That's just awful, and while there are certainly layoffs outside of tech, I think I want to be done basing my livelihood so blatantly on investor speculation. I think I might be done with startups, and maybe even with tech entirely if I can't make a less speculative living with it.

So I'm looking for non-governmental resources because the last thing I want right now is to deal with a Texas state agency. And if there are disability-focused resources that treat us with dignity then they're fine too, but the "disabled will be grateful for any crumbs they get" trope needs to be taken out back and shot. I'm done being exploited, and IME disability resources don't usually factor that in.

Since about 2011 or so, I've had a Yamaha PSR-E223. It's been through quite a lot. The E2 and B5 keys no longer work properly, and the power socket is unstable, but it's still hanging on. It ships with 102 demo songs, most of them being traditional/classical music, with the first three being original. The first one, simply called Demo 1 in the manual, has always been one of my favorites. A funky track, primarily piano-focused but with some input from guitars and organs. Composer unknown.

The silent notifications bug is back in iOS 18.1 beta 3. Most likely it was never gone.

Anyone running macOS 15 and want to test to see if this `aria-activedescendant` bug is really fixed?
bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?iโ€ฆ

Itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t trust Apple folks, itโ€™s just that I have learned never to take the โ€œFixed!โ€ assertion at face value.

#a11y #accessibility #Safari #ARIA

in reply to Adrian Roselli

It is fixed in macOS 15.1 beta 3. Voiceover now reads the element that receives aria-activedescendant if I navigate using the arrow keys. The problem is that widgets that rely solely on aria-activedescendant are less likely to work with the Voiceover cursor, and the Voiceover cursor is the primary form of navigation for most Voiceover userss. While a pattern like the select only combobox in the aria authoring practices works seamlessly on Windows where screen readers automatically switch off virtual mode by default and pass the keystrokes to the browser, it is likely to be perceived as an inaccessible combobox by Voiceover users who primarily rely on Voiceover commands to drive the UI. In any case the bug is fixed, and that is great news.

GitHub copilot seems to be high.

Did the behaviour of either wget or golang http change?

0

I don't even know what this output means, but no file is downloaded. Curl works fine. The endpoint is a golang proxy I wrote. It used to work...

in reply to Hubert Figuiรจre

@hub Yeah I was wondering if it was related. Apparently it's this line that triggers it:

> w.WriteHeader(http.StatusProcessing) // http 102, RFC 2518, 10.1

So, Metaโ€™s Threads platform appears to be discriminating against Catholic members. Two popular hashtags are now banned.

And why are those hashtags banned? So, what happens if I use the #Catholic hashtag over there? Would my account get flagged?

The negative experiences I see some people having with windows 11 must be frustrating, and Iโ€™m so sorry that youโ€™re going through them. I have to say that for what I want to do, itโ€™s been fine. I donโ€™t love that I have to show more options in context menus, but I have heard that there is some sort of fix for that. Like a registry hack or something. Anybody have a link for that?
in reply to David Goldfield

To be fair, I will say that Win11 has its annoyances, things Microsoft changed or removed from Win10 that they honestly should have left alone and I could see how that would irritate some people. It somewhat irritates me but not enough to cause me to hate using it or to seriously consider reverting back to Win10.

Making the LPR command in Mac OS actually work, with no warning / prompt by default, was definitely a mistake on Apple's part. So was making software that would send the screen contents to LPR when you pressed the wrong f key by accident.

No, I haven't actually been hit by this, but I've had very close calls.

Not to brag, but I can still fit into the same socks I wore in high school.

I have no TextMate Windows open.

This hasn't happened in years.
