I’ve now been using it for about two months and I am here to tell you that it is, in principle, what we should want the internet to be. If you have been remotely interested in Mastodon but had reservations about joining because you thought it would be difficult, confusing, or otherwise annoying, it is not.

Here is how you make a #Mastodon account: You go to this website. You agree to not share #disinformation or be an asshole. You select a username and password. Then, you have a Mastodon account.

I wrote about my first two months on Mastodon. I was a Mastodon hater because I thought it would be weird, complicated, or dead. It's been none of those things.

I'm ashamed I didn't join earlier and I'm ashamed I haven't been telling people to join it, because it's a version of the internet and social media I've long advocated for with my reporting: decentralized, portable, user controlled, not corporate:

The #CSAM clusterfuck just became even more shitty:

Dutch researcher Danny Mekić has looked at #advertising data from #Twitter & says that the @EU_Commission's #DGHome has used #SurveillanceAds based on prohibited data categories to target people with #disinformation about the #ChatControl proposal.

#YlvaJohansson's department specifically targeted people in member states that had been critical of her proposal but excluded people who are likely to value #privacy.

Open letter from 500+ organisations and individuals published today calling on #COP27 leaders to take action on #climatechange #misinformation and #disinformation, and on tech platforms to implement a series of policy measures, including the adoption of a universal definition of climate mis/disinfo, to address its spread online. https://caad.info/open-letter/

CZ.NIC, the association managing the #Czech #domain registry just removed .CZ domains of several websites spreading Russian #propaganda.
Without any judicial decision. Just because the government and security agencies asked. That's a slippery slope and not the right way to fight #disinformation, sorry.
