I think planned hardware obsolescence is usually bad. I have an iPhone XS. It can't be upgraded to iOS 26. Eventually, perhaps within the next year, it will cease to be eligible for security updates. Apart from this, I have no good reason to buy a new phone. With the latest iOS 18 and applications, its performance is fine, and it does what I want it to do. Disposing of it is obviously detrimental to the environment, but if I give it to someone else to use, it will be a security risk for them too. According to the articles I've read, Android devices have historically been worse in this respect. Some Android manufacturers committed to five years of software support, which is still worse than what Apple provided for my device. Of course, millions of Windows users are about to encounter a similar problem, as has been much publicised in recent months. One of my machines doesn't meet the minimum Windows 11 requirements, but it runs Windows 11 perfectly well after making Microsoft's official registry change to bypass the compatibility check. More importantly, it runs Linux comfortably, and will probably continue to do so until the hardware fails or the kernel community decides to stop supporting it. I suspect the former will occur first. We need a shift in values and policy that places greater value on hardware longevity. #hardware #Android #iOS #Linux #sustainability
Some Android devices do at least have the option to unlock the bootloader and install a custom Android rom like LineageOS on it. Something Apple would never allow.
LineageOS expands the lifetime of a device considerably.
Also, Fairphones (also with Android) have a much longer support period than all other Android devices. And are repairable!
I replaced my 8+ earlier this year mostly for the same reason. It kind of annoyed me to have to replace it--it still worked perfectly fine, aside from being stuck on IOS 16. Its battery was starting to wear out, but, in theory, the battery could have been replaced.
We (partially) fixed the chatlist table on WhatsApp web. Ctrl+alt+up/down arrow should now let you move through your chats in browse/virtual cursor mode on the web or in the new windows app!
@menelion Uhm, I believe it is also ctrl+alt+arrows in JAWS? Alt by itself did not work and ctrl+alt said something about columns. Anyway, it looks like this is still broken for JAWS unfortunately. It’s definitely not totally fixed in NVDA either, the columns are still broken, but that’s less of an issue. The ARIA for this is a complete mess and everyone’s afraid of touching it, but I will try my best to find someone with some cycles to look into it further.
If you need a tester, I can jump in. I'm also a JAWS private beta tester, so if needed, I can sign NDAs, participate in video calls, report bugs and so on, as always.

Anyone with Meta glasses (especially Oakley variant) having issues with the mic cutting in and out on calls? Its getting unusable for me at the moment. Seems to work ok for talking to the assistant.

Ethernet really does put out a fair bit of RF interference across the VHF/UHF bands. Fortunately, its not in the amateur radio bands. But I wonder, if someone had a powerful transmitter capable of transmitting on the frequencies where it likes to hum and wer away, if it would actually degrade the ethernet connections. Probably the twisted pair nature of ethernet would help its robustness, but I still wonder if it would jitter more, or drop a bit of bandwidth.

My mother always blamed our generation for being consumerist. She claimed that under the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, their generation had access to far fewer products and still managed to enjoy life.
That's why I was quite surprised when she and her boyfriend became completely addicted to shopping at #Temu. They buy cheap crap and don't care because it's so cheap that they can throw it away and buy new stuff right away. Suddenly, it's our generation that looks like the responsible one.
@adamw definitely, it's just that in our family we have a clear split between generations. I and my sister try to buy responsibly, rather fewer, but more quality goods, we care about the environmental impact and then we hear them talk about buying stuff that lasts only a few days, but they don't care because even when you replace it so frequently it's still cheap. 🙂
I think Temu taps into some sort of hunter/gatherer instinct that gives people a hit of dopamine or whatever from just going through the motions of buying stuff. It's not the stuff, it's the activity, somehow.
(I could be wrong, I'm not a trained psychologist-type person...that'd be my wife. I just own a brain, I don't fully grok how they work.)
@jzb yes, there is something about it. Every time I check my mom's phone it's full of notifications from Temu. It's more about the dark patterns their generation was never trained to resist. Not that our generation is very good at resisting them, but we at least have some clues, they're completely naive.

I think its a symptom of how broken internet and social media have gotten.
Adding the current social and economical landscape into the mix . . . the prices of everything went up, while the wages are barely increasing. People are struggling, so they cope by buying things, just so they can proove that they can, and show off they are part of current trends.
Who cares about the quality and usecase, when you were able to buy 10 items for one euro? Thats like they give it out for free!
@vadim You may still face some unpleasant surprise. For example, I found out that my son hacked into my neighbour's wireless network to overcome a similar block in our household. People are somehow attracted to the unavailable.

You know, I can't wait for Windows 10 to become EOL. Then maybe, just maybe, more blind people will check out Linux, meaning more blind developers will check it out. Just like Mastodon. In my dreams lol.
The problem is the blind made mastodon apps are buggy, incomplete, and abandond. They are nowhere near sighted apps. I don’t want the same thing for my desktop.
@fastfinge About blind made mastodon apps, I aim to make Thrive not buggy, fully complete and suitable for both blind and sighted people, it obviously takes time, and I have other stuff I'm working on, so I wouldn't forever dismiss it as just another incomplete blindy client, as in due course, it will be better.

on Windows 10 LTSC, lowest I can get Ram at cold boot is, 2.97 GB. Sometimes 3.10 GB. Compared to Windows 11's 4.00 or almost 5, this is an improvement by some margin. I can say it runs faster in terms of things opening in folders. Not sure if I'll regret it, but hey, I have a super long time to decide that. Well, at least until 2027. ah wait, not even. Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, offers support until January 13, 2032.
