OK open source security nerds, I need your help

I have a podcast youtube show thing called Open Source Security

opensourcesecurity.io/

I'm always looking for guests. Back when I changed formats in January I had a pretty large list of people sent to me as suggestions. I've made it through the list (it took me 10 months)

If you know someone (or are someone) doing open source security work I would love a suggestion. DMs are open and there are other contact things on the website

I especially like guests who are unsung heroes

well well. Got the AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT E-GPU enclosure (using it over OCULink) - works really well through ROCM and Linux! Linux FTW. I can get at least 3-4 words a seconds out of its 20-21 teraflops of power, certainly nowhere near the 100+ Teraflops of Int16 floatingpoint you get on RTX 5060 TI or above, but better than the 15 to 16 you get on the RTX 4060. In my tests it does way better, at least compared to the 780M Radion GPU that's built-in, it's a huge leap forward. Probably a near 3-times jump.

So conservatives are calling for people to drop Netflix because of a few transgender shows they have on the streaming service. These people need to realize these streaming services serve a wide variety of people and beliefs, not just their narrow minded world view. They are not going to just cater to the closed mindedness of a few people who can't be bothered to just change the channel. They are claiming that these shows are pushing a "transgender agenda" whatever that is supposed to mean. They are just TV shows and nothing more, if you don't want to watch them then don't. Now I want to check them out just to see them. I would not have even heard of them if it had not been for some nuts getting their panties in a wad. So Netflix should thank these people for the publicity. Back in my day if our parents didn't want us to watch something you know what they did, they didn't let us watch it. We may not have always agreed with it but the rules were enforced. My folks didn't expect the TV networks to do their job and baby sit us. They were smart enough to know that there were going to be some shows they didn't like so they didn't watch them and didn't let us watch them until we were old enough to make those informed choices on our own. It is time we got back to the days of learning if you don't like something on TV then don't watch it. Stop thinking you have a right to decide what everyone else watches because you don't. These calls for people to drop a certain service or boycott a TV show usually have the opposite effect because they make people curious about the shows. Also most people are smart enough to realize that these shows and services are not pushing some kind of agenda. I mean to shows with straight people push a straight agenda? The whole idea is laughable to most of us. It is simple. If you don't like it, then don't watch it and something else to keep in mind, Netflix was not meant to do your job as a parent. Being a parent means deciding what your own kids watch, not everyone else's. Do your job and don't expect Netflix or any other TV network or streaming service to do it. Being a parent is not their job, it is yours.

A year of sunrises - 13 pictures of the sun, each month, same place, same time.

"One of the best places in Edmonton to see the sunrise point change along a familiar horizon is Valleyview Drive, which is where I photographed sunrise once a month for a year. This image is the final result of stacking 13 sunrise images from Dec 2020 to Dec 2021, to visually depict the change in the sunrise point over a year." - Photographer, Luca Vanzella.

@tychotithonus it's not clean, you have to replace all the packages after you change the repos. And then force install the FreeBSD-* packages over the GhostBSD-* packages. It's annoying and it will eat your /etc/passwd and group files. You could break your system I bet, and it would be annoying to have to boot up a rescue disk to repair it, but it went fine for me. I was prepared for surgery if necessary 🥸

Because I've been impersonated by a certain troll who I'm sure would like their name mentioned, I want to make it clear that this is my official account. If you receive any messages or follow requests from accounts other than this one on mstdn.social, then it's a fake, and was set up without my permission. Stacks of boomboxes, radios, cameras, and other vintage tech at an electronics shop on Canal Street. I’m not a tech-head, but I still felt a huge rush of nostalgia walking in to get my stereo fixed. A younger customer wondered what the rectangular slot under a TV screen was for, and asked “What’s VHS?” The proprietor and I looked at each other and laughed, and felt old together.

@TheEvilSkeleton Hey 👋. So there's this problem with the #refine app.

I doesn't identify the cursor theme that I installed. On my previous OS (which was also Fedora), it was able to do it. I believe since I had it on my root directory, that could be a reason.

Could you please look into it ?

@frameworkcomputer sponsors a transphobic developer: Vaxry, developer of the Hyprland compositor.

xcancel.com/FrameworkPuter/sta…

Vaxry has been known to harass trans ppl. If Framework is putting money towards that, maybe I won't put money toward Framework anymore. Maybe you shouldn't either, until they stop this.

Transphobia is not appealing, especially for the kind of people who would normally be interested in Framework's devices.

Hi @frameworkcomputer, I am the sole IT purchasing decision-maker at my company. We recently switched to your laptops as our exclusive provider, but we are now back in the market for a supplier who doesn’t fund people who want me and my kind eliminated.

In case you were wondering if your political decision has financial consequences, yes it does.

Answer: the end of the rule of law in Europe, and with it, an example for others.

Global renewable energy generation surpasses coal for first time
theguardian.com/environment/20…

This is definitely something to celebrate! 🎉

That said, please remember, the goal here is not to have ever larger part of our energy generated from renewables.

👉 The goal is to have coal, gas, and other fossil fuel based energy generation to go down in *absolute terms*.

⚠️ And sadly, in a lot of places including EU and US – as the article mentions – fossil fuel based power generation is *still growing*.

in reply to Michał "rysiek" Woźniak · 🇺🇦

So if we are adding so much renewable power generation capacity, why are we not shutting down coal and gas powered plants? Why, in fact, are we *adding* more?

A large part of the answer here is – *siiiigh* – AI.

Most coal-fired power plants will delay retirement to feed AI boom, energy secretary says

AI could keep us dependent on natural gas for decades to come

And if you hear anyone claiming – like heavily AI invested¹ Bill Gates has claimed² – that "AI" will help solving the climate crisis, remember this:

We really don't need a supercomputer to tell us what needs to be done. This is not rocket surgery. We need to lower fossil fuel emissions. That's it. And we already know this.

AI "helping" with climate crisis is purely hypothetical at this point. But the harms related to this bubble are already here. In form of coal plants not being retired.

Hey, @frameworkcomputer! It's really disappointing to hear you decided to sponsor Hyprland! It's all well and good sponsoring popular Linux software, but do your due dilegence: Hyprland is run by a transphobic asshole who has been ejected from Freedesktop.org over repeated code of conduct violations, and has continued to be wildly toxic in the time since.
I don't know if you can back out of that sponsorship now, but whatever you can do, you have to do better.

Newcomers: I’m not going to yell at you about alt text.

But I will tell you, just as a factual matter, if you don’t add alt text to your images they may get fewer faves and boosts. There are people here who rely on it to know what you’ve posted, and many more who won’t engage with media that doesn’t have alt text.

RE: infosec.exchange/@vxdb/1153389…

I've been trying to get the cybercrime journalist @vxdb to abandon their seat at the Nazi Bar, or at least to also post here. So please join me in giving them a follow and a friendly hello.

@vxdb

I'm a death lawyer. It's nice. But what surprises me is how rarely people do cool stuff with their money (or their bodies) when they die. "UhHhH tAkE cArE oF mY wIfE wHeN I DiE," "i LoVe My ChIlDrEn EqUaLlY." Grow up.

Where are the bequests of fortunes to shirtsleeve relatives in exchange for spending a night in a haunted house? What about having your remains loaded into a cannon and fired into rush hour traffic? Where are the scholarships for bagpipers and other undesirables?
