Any #ZFS folks want to offer me an opinion on the following? I have 2 ZFS pool of raidz2 with 7 2TB SAS drives each (about 11.5T). I want to add a LOG drive. I have a single SAS SSD that's 300G. When I suggested using a 1TB LOG drive earlier, someone said that was way too much. (which is why I picked up a used 300G SSD)
My question is whether it makes sense (is possible) to partition that drive into 2 partitions and have one pool use 1 partition as a log drive (e.g., 150G) and the other pool use the other partition as a log drive on the same physical device.
Is this going to be worse because it's just too much IO on one device? Is it reasonable? Any other ideas?
oh gosh, unless you know you are doing a lot of synchronous writes (almost never; databases and NFS mostly... maybe VMs???) you do not need a LOG at all.
If you do add a LOG, it just needs to be large enough to buffer the writes until they're flushed to the other vdevs. You honestly could get away with something as small as like 8GB for a low IO / homelab type environment. But you won't find a modern drive that small, so if you're going to do this just make it as small as possible. Pick quality over quantity here. SLC drives (do they even exist anymore?) are of course ideal.
Splitting the LOG device between multiple zpools isn't crazy. I have a tiny partition I use for LOG and then use the rest for L2 ARC which is another option to maximize the usage of your fast storage.
This is the most Sirius Cybernetics thing I’ve seen IRL. This was a floor mopping robot at the local QT. It had cute animated eyes and said “I’m cleaning the floor! Bad thoughts were right. My instinct was spot on. It's toe cancer.
Now here's the fun part: finding a place willing and properly qualified to do the toe amputation as quick as possible. This was very easy when I lived in Madison, WI as we had the vet school at the university there. They covered everything from hamsters to horses and had the absolute latest veterinarian diagnostic and treatment equipment.
Been bounced around by vets I called, currently booked with Blue Pearl which is sort of a nationwide chain veterinary surgical / emergency hospitals.

I'm also especially on edge right now because my last giant had a toe cancer and my current dog Betty had a nail break badly and the entire nail had to be cut off near the base and getting this healed is a pain in the ass as it does bleed a lot (edit: not really "bleed".. more like a scab that just keeps getting disturbed, but cutting a nail back that far is going to be problematic).
I'm checking it constantly for any strange signs that there could be tumor growth that was misdiagnosed, as a tumor could potentially weaken the nail and cause this. Previous dog had 3 biopsies before they finally confirmed it even though I was screaming TOE CANCER at them the whole time.
HOWEVER
her nail issue started with the side getting badly chipped and then the structure was just weakened which doesn't track with a tumor inside or at the base. But I can't stop thinking the bad thoughts, ya know?

Tohle by stálo za žalobu na stát. Buď ten kód vůbec není pod licencí požadovanou zákonem (=> žaloba) nebo je a ta licence je porušovaná (=> žaloba). Když se stát rozhodne nedodržovat zákon, máme právní systém od toho, abychom ho k tomu donutili. S právním systémem na Slovensku je to všelijaké, ale to pak má společnost problém úplně jiných rozměru než jen open source ve státní správě.

In this case the warning was quite literal.
The company annoyed a buyer enough to push him into full blown nerd mode. He tore the product apart, reverse engineered every part, and then published a step by step guide showing exactly how to disable "kill switch" that prevented the use of the product without the vendor spying on the user.
What started as a minor grievance became a public, technical exposé that left the maker exposed and embarrassed.
Moral of the story: underestimate your users at your own peril.

The linked article was not written by me. It came to me on a different channel (Discord). I only wrote the post on Mastodon.
The top image in the article looks AI generated. It is no a good image, but in my view less irritating than an advertisement (which is far more common).
Some people suggest the article itself is AI generated. I don't think this is the case. I wouldn't rule out he author wrote the text in a different language and used AI for translation assistance.
The claims in the article are not fully backed by the linked repo, but the general statement is correct and IMHO important.

This technology will increase voyeurism and stalking aggressions in unacceptable ways. These glasses are a voyeur's dream weapon. Also a doxxer's and stalker's dream weapon.
Why are our laws and cultures not protecting us against this?

Mastodon is seriously such an interesting place. I have posts boosted by people with thousands of followers (the most was something with 10k) from who I'd just never expect to boost random stuff like that I post. It's mostly quiet and just moving along, silently reading the tl, at least for me, but once it gets engaging, it's fun as well. But I think much also depends on the server, and I'm happy with mine.
I wanted to send myself an email to my gmail account, in order to open it in evolution and test something for the day job. I used my sdf.org email to send the email, figuring that Google might be less likely to consider it spam than something I sent from my vps (in hindsight, I should've used my work email, but didn't think of that for some reason). But, no, it landed in my junk folder.
Sometimes I wonder if I should give up and use Google or Microsoft for my email, so that all of the people who use Google or Microsoft for their email would receive my emails, but then, if I did that, then I would be the one with other peoples' emails being caught in their spam filters.
There are those moments in life you know already from the start are going to be the rare once in a lifetime events. This evening was one of those times.
