Überall in Europa sprießen die "Sovereign Clouds" aus dem Boden und die Europäer freuen sich: Hurra, endlich bekommen wir digitale Souveränität ... Wir bekommen doch digitale Souveränität ... oder?
Wenn man sich einmal ernsthaft durchdenkt, was eine "Sovereign Cloud" eines außereuropäischen Hyperscalers in Europa bedeutet, dann landet man in Gedanken schnell bei der guten alten Media Markt Werbung aus "Geiz ist Geil!" Zeiten: "La la lasst euch nicht veralbern ... vor allem nicht bei der Souveränität!"
Gehen wir zur Untermauerung der These einmal die einzelnen Bestandteile der Sovereign Cloud durch:
Gebäude ✅
Das Gebäude des Rechenzentrums steht in Europa. Dieses werden wir im Zweifelsfall nutzen können. Wenn es mal zum "Fall der Fälle" kommt und bspw. wie im Falle des Internationalen Gerichtshof Abschaltungen von Software drohen, dann können wir immerhin das Gebäude weiternutzen.
Server ✅
Die Server stehen im Gebäude. Das Gebäude steht in Europa. Die reinen Server als Hardware stehen daher unter unserem Zugriff und wir sind insoweit sicher. Das bedeutet, im Souveränitäts-Ernstfall können wir diese dann vielleicht noch weiterverwenden um wirklich souveräne Lösungen darauf zu betreiben.
Daten ❌
Die Daten liegen auf Systemen, die außereuropäischer Jurisdiktion unterliegt. Bspw. erstrecken einzelne Jurisdiktionen ihren Zugriffsanspruch auf Daten auf sämtlichen Servern weltweit. Über alles was dort liegt, entscheidet also nicht Europa alleine, sondern im Ernstfall auch außereuropäische Regierungen. Wollen wir da unsere Bürgerinnen- und Bürger- und Regierungsdaten ablegen?
Betriebssicherheit ❌
Die Systeme der außereuropäischen Hyperscaler werden mit propriertärer Software betrieben, deren Betrieb und Sicherheit nur sie selbst schaffen können. Sollten bspw. Exportbeschränkungen für Software entstehen, dann wird die Sovereign Cloud binnen weniger Wochen zum Schweizer Käse was Informationssicherheit betrifft und sie muss abgeschaltet werden.
▶️ Fazit: An den "Sovereign Clouds", wie sie derzeit überall aus dem Boden sprießen, also Gebäude in Europa, mit Blech in Europa, aber aller Software auf Basis der Hyperscaler-Produkte außereuropäischer Anbieter, ist so gar nichts souverän. Europa bleibt Beton & Blech. Digitales & Daten liegen außer unserer Kontrolle. Im Fall der Fälle geht die Sovereign Cloud binnen Wochen in die Knie. Das Konstrukt ist daher eine Nebelkerze und verschleiert, wo die tatsächlichen Probleme für Europa liegen. 🌫️🕯️
P.S.: Die neuen Jobs entstehen natürlich vor allem für den Wachhund und eine kleine Betriebsmannschaft, die ab und an mal ein Kabel neu einsteckt. Die eigentliche Wertschöpfung entsteht natürlich NICHT in Europa.
Was denkt ihr über "Sovereign Cloud"? Ich finde es legitim, Hyperscaler für bestimmte Dinge zu nutzen, wenn man sich der Risiken bewusst ist. Aber dieses Souveränitäts-Washing ist wirklich nicht schön. 🤷♂️
Bericht in der Lokalzeitung mit der Überschrift "KI schreibt Songs nach Schülerwünschen" und der Schlusssatz lautet "Die teilnehmenden Schüler sind laut Mitteilung ab jetzt richtige Songschreiber" und ich sitze davor und möchte abwechselnd in die Tischkante beißen und laut schreien. Ein weiterer Artikel auf der Seite berichtet von einem mangels Interesse abgesagten Konzert. Dabei hätte es dort menschengemachte Musik gegeben.
Ich finde das sehr traurig. Musik und letztlich jede Kunst ist so viel mehr als das Ergebnis. Aber es passt in den Zeitgeist, Künstliches zu konsumieren, als Kunst zu schaffen. Es ist natürlich viel müheloser in ein Textfeld Ideen zu schreiben und etwas zu bekommen, dass diese Ideen ohne Vorkenntnisse vertont, grafisch darstellt oder textlich aufhübscht. Aber der Prozess, der dadurch verloren geht, ist eben so viel mehr. Und ich hoffe, dass das Menschen wieder zu schätzen wissen. Gerne bevor alles nur noch gleich klingt.

I’m surrounded by boxes. We’ve finally finished all the modifications, and we can move into our dream home tomorrow. I’m sitting here looking at the house’s own website where we can control everything from, and the iOS app, and I’m awe struck by what we’ve built. I just hope it’ll be a very long time before we move again because I’m not sure we’ll ever do this so well again. We got so lucky with the company I picked for this project. He wasn’t super knowledgable about #accessibility when we started working together, but he took me seriously and got into the challenge of finding the best options. I’m sure there will be shortcomings we identify once we actually live there, but we have the fundamentals right and the infrastructure, so it’ll be fun to tweak it and watch it grow. I told Bonnie to say goodbye to the house when she left it this afternoon. It responded by turning off the Sonos, turning off the TV, and after sixty seconds it locked the door and set the alarm. The visual descriptions it gives over all the Sonos’s of who is at the door, when it doesn’t recognize the person by name, are so detailed and vidid. And on and on and on. I’m really thrilled by what we’ve ended up with. But there is one final thing I would say about this. It’s been a fun project, but even if we were moving into a tin shack, it would be a palace as long as Bonnie is there too.

Example: Roasted sesame oil. Didn't know there was such a thing until a year ago, and I never want to miss it again.

@piero yeah but this isn't about infringing on a patented API anymore, it's now free game for anything that is "substantially similar".
If a summary of a book is "substantially similar", I think it could open the doors to any open source software that looks or behaves like something proprietary and replaces its functionality is also "substantially similar".
I think that's the mess we're in. If we try to do the right thing and nail OpenAI on this specific charge (not the stealing of books etc, just the model itself) it will set a dangerous precedent
@piero e.g., a GPL project forked off and isn't contributing upstream anymore so now it is competing and is substantially similar. Based on how they want to bend the GPL, maybe that's not okay
But BSD/MIT license always granted rights to do anything just keep copyright/attribution, so you should be fine
