@jscholes At my workplace, there is a whole thread of discussion around "when to disclose" your disability status. I always found this a very strange thing to talk about, that opting to pretend to the world like you are fine and don't have a problem is the normal, default setting. Must be nice!

@matt The problem is that there isn't a web browser for the console which can compete with the mainstream ones. If there was, we could use Linux in console only, which is far more stable.

in reply to WestphalDenn

@WestphalDenn @Talon I don't think it's that catastrophic as this sounds any more. I can't say this is not happening but it's very rare. I am on @GNOME . If I get an unresponsive experience I can press alt+F2, type in orca --replace and the screen reader comes back. I can even bind this to a global keyboard shortcut.
When I am leaving my office I am often closing some 15 browser windows, some 10 terminal windows, about 5 different files open in the text editor.
Most used apps on my desktop include #Firefox #Thunderbird file manager (pcmanfm or nautilus), Gedit, VLC media player, electron based apps such as teamsforlinux, losslesscut and gnome-terminal.
Next I'm using @LibreOffice, I am also using #Emacs with #speechd-el a little and finally some other less frequently used apps.
As for the #TTS or the #audio setup I am using #RHVoice, speech-dispatcher and @PipeWire Project .
Finally with @Matt Campbell and @Lukáš Tyrychtr we do have tallented visually disabled developers dogfooding or partially dog fooding so let me finish this post by saying it really is gold era of a linux #a11y and we are looking forward for what it brings us in the future.
in reply to Peter Vágner

@pvagner @libreoffice @matt That sounds good. I am in the process of ditching Windows. So any hints would be very welcome.
in reply to WestphalDenn

@WestphalDenn I can't promise any guide style materials but please feel free to ask and I'm happy to answer and give recomendations if you like. Also orca list is a very friendly place where general linux #a11y topics are tolerated very often. https://www.freelists.org/list/orca
in reply to Peter Vágner

@pvagner Thanks. Currently I am wondering if I should switch from my Debian Mate installation to the newest Fedora for newer versions of LibreOffice and orca. I am not sure if Gnome or Mate is "better" or if that really makes that much of a difference for use with orca.
in reply to WestphalDenn

@WestphalDenn I would say both have pros and cons. For example mate has traditional desktop and standard application menus with submenus and similar. Many #screenReader users prefer that classic style. However @GNOME is also technically fully accessible. In version 45 and 46 a lot of polishing has been made. The top bar is fully operational with the keyboard all the popup menus, dropdown buttons, toggles, sliders on the top pannel are now accessible. Gnome control center has now almost all its controls clearly labelled. The only place in the gnome control center where I expect some improvements in the future is redefining keyboard shortcuts. On my machine I have noticed memory usage has decreased after upgrading to gnome 46 so in this regard #mate desktop and @GNOME desktop are on par as well.
Also gnome is very likelly to pioneer #accessibility innovations in upcoming releases so for me the answer is clear. I'm on @GNOME since v3.4 and v3.6 days and I am not going to change that.
in reply to Peter Vágner

@pvagner @gnome That helps a lot thanks! I really like the menu-system in Mate as well. Pressing Alt+F1, arrow down, pres i followed by f to open Firefox is extremely quick. I wonder if and if so how one gets an overview of installed programms. when Gnome 3 was new I remember having a hard time wrapping my head around on how to find newly installed programms for example. But maybe search just got better.
