There's a growing movement on the #fedi that wants people to switch away from Big (US-based) Tech and towards #FOSS alternatives like #Linux, alternatives to #google, #Microsoft, #dropbox etc.
For #screenReader users, that might not be as simple as all that due to #accessibility reasons. This weekend's IC_Null stream aims to dig into this, but I need your help. What tools, services etc. should I look at from an #accessibility perspective? Anyone here who needs their tools evaluated? Anyone here who's curious about a particular tool or suite of tools? Let me know and I'll add it to the list. Anything goes. #selfHosting #blind #tech #EU

i think regardless of how usable or unusable foss is in terms of accessibility requirements, in the long run it's gonna do way more for accessability than continuing to support tech companies that bow to fascists.
i'm all for improving accessability in foss but we have to jump ship now. we can't wait until foss is on par with the likes of microsoft and apple - at least not in public institutions.
(iirc germany's soverain tech fund did specifically request more a13y)

Nextcloud: Imperfect accessibility in client applications
Jitsi Meet: massive improvement, but still a few things they can correct. They are however receptive to, and have made fixes for, several accessibility issues.
The opensource alternative to Google Docs being backed by France and Germany: Something to look out for and encourage building of accessibility from the outset.

@jackf723 @CIMB4 TBH, as an EU citizen, I'm very skeptical of EU government projects of that sort.
If it goes like all the other EU projects, we will get something that technically does everything it is supposed to do, that technically fullfills all its requirements and passes all audits, but not something that is actually usable or useful.

I used Gitlab at work back in the day and it was accessible if a bit annoying, but I don't have much Gitea experience.

Also looking at #kaliLinux , #debian, #fedora, #ubuntu and #LinuxMint #justSwitchToLinux #justWatchMeTry #letsJustSeeIfItEvenLetsMe :P

in reply to Florian • • •Nah but seriously we'll look at a number of first-time experiences (install, initial boot into the OS ec.) of various popular and less popular distros. I will comment on the #accessibility considerations primarily for #screenReader users and I'm sure other things'll come up. See you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed around 3 PM EST/8P BST/9pm CEST over at twitch.tv/ic_null or youtube.com/@blindlyCoding. My #peertube account is, unfortunately, not approved yet :) #selfPromo #tech #foss #selfHosting #homeLab #stream #ubuntu #debian #fedora #elementaryOs #kaliLinux #blind
