Lot of new people over past couple of days asking for help! Welcome 👋

I am an unofficial tech support account helping people use Mastodon and the Fediverse. If you want to ask anything at all about this place, feel free to mention or message me:

➡️ @FediTips

My website is full of beginner's guides:

➡️ fedi.tips

I also run a site and account to help people discover who to follow:

➡️ fedi.directory

➡️ @FediFollows

If you have any questions, please ask!

#FediTips

If you see a post or reply in your timeline and you want to find out which thread it belongs to, just click on it! This will take you to the post or reply within its own thread, where you can then scroll up and down to see the rest of the thread.

(I know this might sound obvious to some of you but I have had several people ask about this, and there's no such thing as a silly question 👍 )

#FediTips

The term "Mentions" on here means when you type an @ symbol and then the address of the account you want to mention. This is also known as @-ing (pronounced "at-ing").

Mentioning an account causes the account owner to get a notification about the post where they were mentioned, so they can go and see it.

There are lots of questions answered about mentions on Mastodon here:

➡️ fedi.tips/what-are-mentions-on…

If you have any other questions, let me know in the replies!

#FediTips

If you want to, you can set your Mastodon account to automatically delete your own posts after a certain time period (for example posts older than 90 days). You can also set it to retain certain types of posts even after the period has elapsed.

There is a step-by-step guide about how to use this feature at:

➡️ fedi.tips/deleting-posts-autom…

The guide also answers lots of questions including why deletions sometimes get delayed, and whether auto-deletion stresses server resources.

Reminder that the original Metatext third party app is no longer being maintained, as its lead developer had to step back due to health issues.

However, there is a new version of Metatext run by different people called Feditext which is currently in public beta testing. You can follow the official Feditext account at:

➡️ @Feditext

If you would like to join the public beta testing, it's on Apple TestFlight. There are more instructions here:

The Fediverse's social reading platform BookWyrm lets you import your account data from Goodreads, LibraryThing, StoryGraph, OpenLibrary or Calibre. There are step by step instructions for how to do this here:

➡️ fedi.tips/importing-your-data-…

If you're wondering what the heck BookWyrm is, it's a Fediverse alternative to Amazon's Goodreads. There's an intro article here:

If you are using Mastodon on a computer, you can optionally use it entirely through your keyboard using "hotkeys". There is a complete list of these keyboard shortcuts here:

➡️ fedi.tips/using-mastodon-throu…

You can see this list at any time by pressing Shift + ? (or just ? on some keyboard layouts).

Some of the shortcuts only work with the advanced multicolumn mode (more info about it: fedi.tips/how-to-activate-mast…) but most shortcuts work with single column mode too.

#FediTips #Mastodon #Keyboards

There's a fun little browser extension called "StreetPass for Mastodon", which notices if websites you're browsing have official Fediverse accounts:

➡️ streetpass.social

When you check your StreetPass, it will show you a list of all the official accounts from the sites you've been browsing. It does this offline, your browsing data doesn't leave your machine, and the code is free open source.

Official accounts are detected by verification (more info: fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-a…).

#FediTips

Okay, this is possibly going to be controversial in some quarters, but it has to be said for the good of the Fediverse:

Mastodon.social is not a good way to join Mastodon. If you're already on mastodon.social, you might want to move your account to another server. I've done an article about this topic at:

➡️ fedi.tips/its-a-really-bad-ide…

If you want to move your account, there's a complete step-by-step guide to how to do it here:

Wow, apparently there is now a classifieds sales platform for the Fediverse called Flohmarkt ("flea market"). You can find out more at:

➡️ codeberg.org/flohmarkt/flohmar…

...and especially its wiki page at:

➡️ codeberg.org/flohmarkt/flohmar…

The wiki contains a list of existing servers, compatibility with other Fediverse platforms like Mastodon, and instructions for installation.

No official account yet but you can follow the lead developer at:

Do you ever stumble upon an old Excel file that's locked with a password and you can't remember what it is? This can be incredibly frustrating, especially if the file contains valuable data! 😩

In my latest video, I show you a surprisingly easy way to remove worksheet protection from any Excel file, even if you don't have the password! This trick is perfect for those times when you're locked out of your own information.

The best part? You don't need any fancy software to do it! Just a little bit of text editing will do the trick. 😉

(This might seem obvious to some but it has been asked, and it is 100% fine to ask! 👍 )

Hashtags are where you put a # in front of a word or phrase to indicate the topic you're posting about, which makes it easier for people to find your post. Lots of questions answered about hashtags here:

➡️ fedi.tips/what-are-hashtags-ho…

For hashtags with several words, put them together without spaces, with capital letters #LikeThisExample

You can follow hashtags too:

The Fediverse is deliberately spread out on thousands of independent servers running many types of software, which connect together to form a single social network.

But why is it like this? Why go to all this trouble? Wouldn't a single large server be easier?

Here is a complete list of reasons why it is very important for a social network to be spread out on many independent servers:

➡️ fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse…

(If I'm missing a reason, let me know in the replies!)

#FediTips #Fediverse

In case you missed it, you can use Mastodon's "Lists" feature to create themed mini-timelines with accounts you select. You can then hide these accounts from your main timeline if you want, so that it isn't so crowded.

➡️ fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists…

...and if you're on a computer, you can combine Lists with the "Advanced Web Interface" mode to have lots of themed timelines on a single screen:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-to-activate-mast…

You can pin as many Lists as you want, and also hashtags etc.

#FediTips

Have you heard the terms "Fediverse" or "Fedi" and wondered what they are?

I've done a little article that tries to explain what the Fediverse is, and how Mastodon is a part of it:

➡️ fedi.tips/what-is-mastodon-wha…

TL:DR - The Fediverse is a network of thousands of independent social media servers that communicate seamlessly using a common standard. Even totally different kinds of Fediverse server allow users to follow each other.

There's a new free open source Reddit-style platform for the Fediverse called PieFed. It's still fairly early in development, but you can try out a demo server at:

➡️ piefed.social

There's more info on its official website at:

➡️ join.piefed.social

You can follow the project at:

➡️ @piefedadmin

It's lightweight and written to make it easier for developers to contribute. (For any devs reading this, it's written in Python.)

Can't publish public when mentioning forum pages

@Friendica Support
Hi there,
not sure if this is a bug or just that I'm missing some idea/rule functionality.

#bugResearch

Platform Info: 2023.05 - stable | VIER | firefoxFriendica Version: 2023.05 - stable
Theme: VIER
Browser: firefox
Friendica Source: gitHub
PHP version: 8.1.2-1ubuntu2.14
SQL version: MySQL / MariaDB
memory_limit 256M
4 Core CPU, 8 GB Ram with 300GB NVME Disk

I didn't have a look at gitHub

Short bug description:When I try to publish publicly a post addressing two forum pages of this server, gimped and tutorial (tutorial is an account created with this profile), I get a restricted post and I don't understand why.

Details of the buggy behavior:I publish the post as public but it gets displayed as private, only visible for the forum page gimped that actually figures twice in the information card of the lock icon.
Also, I can't pin the post to my profile.

See image gif in screenshots spoiler

¿Possible to reproduce, if so how:This is the code of the post, it happens every time I try:
(somehow friendica alters the tags in this code)
#newHere #neuHier #hola

Gif scene of the movie "The Martian".

The lonely main actor is sitting on a stone on the inhabited planet he was left on alone.
A text reads:
"First day in the diaspora of the fediVerse .."

The astronaut is depicted how he opens the solar panels of his equipment, presses a big button on it and the hashtags #hola, #neuHier and #newHere appear.

In the last scene he sits again on his stone and the text: ".. wait .." is displayed.

In the first scene that reads the text about the first day in the fediVerse the probably oldest logo of the fediVerse is displayed at the bottom left of the scene. At the horizon on the right the actual logo of the the fediVerse rises behind the landscape.

In the last scene, while our hero is awaiting the outcome of his intent to make contact with the outside world, the old Federated Social Web logo appears in front of the sun.[/img]

Expected result:¿what should be the correct behavior?
¿what did you expect?
Being posted public, shared by the forum pages publicly and being able to pin it to my profile.

One of the most under-used features of Mastodon is audio. You can attach audio files to your posts, they can be in MP3, OGG, WAV, FLAC, AAC, M4A or 3GP formats. They can be any length, as long as the file size is under 40 megabytes (some servers may have even higher limits).

I've attached an example audio file to this post, you should be able to play it on most interfaces and apps.

There's an alternative version of Mastodon called "Mastodon Glitch Edition" (aka "glitch-soc" or just "Glitch"). Glitch is totally compatible with normal Mastodon, but adds experimental new features.

For example, Glitch instances let the admin alter the character limit, allow local posting, text formatting and lots of other stuff.

Many features in Glitch have eventually made their way into normal Mastodon after proving themselves stable and useful.

You can find out more at:

glitch-soc.github.io/docs/

If you run your own Mastodon instance you can switch to Glitch, and switch back again if you don't like it.

(You may be wondering how this post is so long? It's because FediTips is on an instance that uses Glitch, and the instance character limit has been extended to 1000.)

📰 New blog post: How to choose a Mastodon/Fediverse server nevillepark.ca/2023/07/01/how-…

Finally got this post out!

A lot of the servers I recommended in a previous post have since shat the bed, so instead I decided to write about what to look for in a fedi server, what to ask the admin, and some red flags.

#FediTips

You don't have to use Mastodon through an app!

Every server has its own website where you can log in and use all its features. The web interface is excellent, and it usually gets the latest features before the apps do.

Your server's website address will usually be the same as its name, for example the website for the server kind.social is at kind.social

The website works on both computers and phones. (If you're using the phone version, click # to see the search box.)

This is a brilliant release from the National Federation of the Blind about why they are scaling back #Twitter and how they have embraced the #Fediverse by coming to #Mastodon.
They truly understand the benefits and the culture here which promotes the engagement of #blind people. nfb.org/about-us/press-room/na…

Mastodon v4.1.0 got released today!
Some awesome additions that people have been after for a while now:
- Add support for importing/exporting server-wide domain blocks
- Ensure exact match is the first result in hashtag searches
- Add support for editing media description and focus point of already-sent posts
- Add listing of followed hashtags

And the list of fixes inbound with this version is monstrous.

This is great to see, but please keep in mind that your particular instance will need to be updated to this version so not all instances will update at the same time.

Some apps may also need to be updated in order to support these new features.

If you've been waiting for full-text #search on #Mastodon, please go to #TootFinder and sign in. The more the merrier.
tootfinder.ch/

Thanks to @buercher for building it.

It's opt-in, not opt-out. It respects Mastodon culture and doesn't index accounts that don't sign in.

That means the index might be small if we don't spread the word.

Direct Messages on Mastodon are probably one of the most confusing things for new users as they aren't really like messages on other platforms.

I have done my best to explain what they are in a few minutes for you all here. Check it out and let me know if it helps.
More tips still to come so stay tuned.

Please give it a #boost if you can to help spread the knowledge around the Fediverse. :ablobcatrave:

I love seeing all the new members joining the platform, but this does mean that with more people, you may feel the need to #mute or #block an account on #Mastodon. That is fine, your experience on this platform should be dictated by you and you alone.
So, I made this short guide to help you better navigate how to use this feature.

Please give it a #boost if you can to help spread the knowledge around the Fediverse.:ablobcatrave:

I still haven't run out of tips to share... :ablobcatcoffee:
Lists are a feature many are used to from the Bird Site, but they function differently here. They are a great tool for you to make your own custom timelines.

Check out this short guide video on what lists are as well as how to set them up for yourself.

Yet again, thanks for the #boosts and subs. I love the culture of sharing here. :comfymelt:

I shared a video earlier in this thread about how to #migrate your account to another server and ensuring your followers come along for the ride, but how do you move other data such as the people you follow, mute or block?
This video walks through this process step by step to make it as seamless for you as possible.

Yet again, thanks for all the boosts and extra thanks to those that subbed to my channel. :success:

Seeing a little too much #Caturday in your feed? Want to hide #spoilers for a TV Show until you see the episode?
#Filters are easy to set up and customise on #Mastodon. This short video walks through how to use them step by step to make it as easy as possible for you to manage your feeds.

As always, thanks in advance for the boosts, and a sub to my channel would mean a lot, I am aiming for 1000 subs. 😜👍

Another day, another video.
A lot of us already have a large #Twitter #Network and would love to be able to easily search #Mastodon for them to fill out our network here.
The #Fedifinder site helps make this a reality and it recently got some updates.
This video walks through the steps to #Migrate your network across in minutes.
As always, any boosts are appreciated to spread the word... And a sub would be lovely. 😜 #twittermigration #twitterexodus #youtube #feditips

Yet another short video to add to the list of guides.
This one covers how to make use of the Advanced Web Interface to really tailor your web experience for #Mastodon.

For those that are used to things like #tweetdeck or the app #tweeten on Windows, this will be very familiar to you. And best of all, it is built right into Mastodon natively.

As always, boosts are appreciated to get the message out to all the newcomers.

This seems to be becoming a habit of mine now as I begin to use Mastodon more and continue to learn more about it each day.

This one covers the options available to you when posting content such as Alt Text and Content Warnings but also talks about language settings and using filters to tidy up your timelines.

Any boosts will be greatly appreciated so we can help everyone get the most out of Mastodon.

OK, well this is getting far more interesting for me! 😎
Given the open nature of the #ActivityPub protocol, it is possible to pull in the Instagram alternative, Pixelfed, into your Mastodon Home Timeline.
This is great for those looking for an alternative to Instagram, but not wanting to use yet another app.

Here is another short video on how this works and how you can use it yourself!

Following on from this Initial Mastodon Guide, I have been seeing a lot of people asking for tips on how to find people and content to fill in their Home Timeline.
I decided to make a follow up video on how to best use search and also cover why sometimes you don't get the results you expect.

youtu.be/9cIbSPPszIE

Any boosts will be appreciated to help others improve their Mastodon experience.

For those that joined #Mastodon and grabbed the first server they could find, but would prefer to #migrate to a different one, I created a short guide on how to do this quickly and easily.
It also allows you to easily move any followers across to your new profile and leaves a redirection on your old profile for those that find it.😁👍

And be sure to check out the threaded replies for more tips. I will continue to add more. 👍🏼

A little known feature of #Mastodon is the ability to create your own personal notes about an account.
This is a great way to potentially remind yourself why you follow particular accounts (or just about any other reason you can think of).

Also, these notes are private. The account does not know what you have written down, nor the fact that you have even made these notes.

Please #boost to help spread the knowledge around your networks. ☺️

I've been looking for a good way of describinng comics in alt text and found a nice article about it written by a screen reader user

veroniiiica.com/2018/11/29/how…

I thought you might find it interesting!
It made me want to do a pinned post to describe how my recurring characters looks without having to repeat it in all images if it's not relevant, smart and convenient!
