Inaccessible websites lose $6.9 billion a year to their accessible counterparts, yet digital inclusion remains under-addressed. We look at how brands can benefit from placing accessibility at the heart of their strategy.Matthew Keegan (Campaign Asia)
Going through the posts this morning, seeing lots of feature requests and questions about our priorities, I thought I would share what we are focused on and why we are making certain decisions.post.news
While many are praising him for his transparency, it reveals a major problem and hurdle with building accessible products. Not to mention the ableism in stating several times, the need to "let everyone in" while choosing not to make sure the application is accessible. Statements like "Our number one focus is letting in the 300K+ users on our waitlist" assume that none of those people have a disability and/or all use technology in the same way.

Here's post.news's founder Noam Bardin, declaring in the same breath "we are not focused on . . . accessibility" and "We want to do it all but first, let's get everyone in." In other words, "everyone" does not include people with disabilities. This kind of discrimination is not uncommon from tech companies, but it's a pretty unusual for a founder to state it this explicitly. #a11y must be an MVP expectation for digital startups.

Fascinating to think through #Mastodon & #Whiteness within this #TechPolicyPress #Podcast featuring @shengokai

I hand't thought of the RT as part of a call/response culture.
My main concern with the piece is that we cannot control whether or not Twitter implodes. Monopolies are inherently fragile & we know it is being run by a benevolent dictator.
Twitter had a good run. We have to adapt. That means building in better means to protect marginalized users. #a11y

Just found out that the open source Python library for converting webpages to PDF, Weasyprint, has recently added experimental support for creating tagged PDFs that conform with PDF/UA:

This is really exciting as there aren’t many open source options for doing this. I’m going to have a play and try creating an @eleventy plugin for this!

Would love thoughts on how to improve the #SVG social media icons here (aside from deleting the Twitter link) codepen.io/mgifford-the-typesc…
We really need to make it easier for people to control social media icons and style them to meet their site. This really should be easy, accessible and susainable.

As "#accessible" drag and drop (with accessible in quotes as I haven't personally verified the claims) is added to #React Aria and React Spectrum, I'm happy to see drag-and-drop get some #accessibility love at the framework level. However, I'm not convinced that aiming for parity always creates the most efficient, usable experiences in this area.
For many use cases, there are alternative approaches legitimately better suited to how people actually operate their devices, across various assistive technologies and input methods. For instance, dropdowns with type-ahead, offering more of an opportunity to browse before committing, rather than constantly navigating back and forth across drop zones which could be far apart.
The article highlights challenges in finding a preexisting holistic system, without delving into the possible reasons for that being the case until now. User feedback is also not a panacea; are you asking someone to evaluate whether they can use a thing? Or whether that thing is a good idea, and/or if a better thing could theoretically exist?

It looks like a lot of organizations are going to need to update their #SocialMedia icons, so I decided to put up a few which include #mastodon.
My goal is to produce #SVG images that respect dark mode, can be easily styled with CSS, and also allow either circle, square or no background.
I want to embed best practices of accessibility, and web sustainability in this.
So what can I do to improve these?
