I was born and raised in rural New England (the most beautiful place in the world) (I'm of course kidding) (am I?)
I tend to be more of a lurker, but I am here reading, listening, watching, thinking, and working on being more confident in contributing in my own way.
i'm derek, he/him. currently in central california and have lived in new york for a bit too
originally went through #music school up through #dma (lol i'd be surprised if that hashtag actually worked and referred to doctor of musical arts) studying #percussion with aspirations of being a "new music" percussionist but didn't stick the landing in music academia. i got a #math degree somewhere along the way and had been getting heavily into #computermusic and #creativecoding sorts of things working at a media lab during the dma so when covid, hit decided to go back to (online) grad school studying computer science. things i'm really into studying cs-wise are #ai/#ml things (more leaning on the ai-side but we'll see) and "soft-cs"/"extra-cs" sorta intersectional things like #hci and #education and starting to read about #computationalcreativity and other things. not sure where my cs studies will go yet but it'd be nice be able to research ai things more. also, i'm really into #foss / #linux sorta things.
other things i'm into are anime and manga (mostly iyashikei, mecha, and ikuhara things), video games, riichi mahjong, animals (mostly cats, sea otters and puffins), stars are cool, and also vast desolate expanses.
think my website better sums up things: derekxkwan.com/
✨#introduction ✨ Hello everyone! I'm Greg, and I'm a writer looking for a nice home and community. I’m mostly a #scifi writer (and reader/watcher) and have been working on flash fiction and poetry as of late, on my way to working up towards longer fiction.
Here’s a small sample of some recent #haiku, ranging from #fanfiction for #Cyberpunk2077 to random #photography moments. (At which I’m trying to get better, and marry it to my love of writing.)

Been on here a while but I guess I’ll do a fresh #introduction :
Hi, I’m Luna!
By day, I’m a graphics programmer in the UK games industry. By night, I’m a demoscener making procedural artworks with code. I’m trans, I love cats (though I don’t have any of my own), and I will always over-commit to the bit - including (but not limited to) buying fonts specifically for making typographically-accurate memes, and building entire websites for a quick gag.
Oh, and here’s some of my art:
Hi all, Roel he/him.
An artist and designer with an interest in computer networks, materiality of the internet, digital community infrastructure, DIY/DIWO approaches, FOSS culture.
You might know my work from the LowTech Mag's solar powered server project solar.lowtechmagazine.com
Currently pursuing a #PhD in Interaction and Participatory #Design at Malmö University. As part of that research I work together with actors in the cultural sector to co-design alternative social media infrastructures with/for them. These are mostly based on fediverse applications, so I am also interested in aspects of #federation #governance #contentmoderation and more generally how to transition to and improve alternatives together etc. This space is far from perfect and in some cases insufficient but we need to start somewhere??
I'm a founding member of varia.zone, and also part of lurk.org. With LURK we've been running a fediverse instance called post.lurk.org since 2018, for which I am happy to be one of the co-admins! As part of that I boost #introductions, calls and questions..
This is introduction is really long because post.lurk.org has a character limit of 1337
LOW←TECH MAGAZINE
Low-tech Magazine refuses to assume that every problem has a high-tech solution. A simple, sensible, but nevertheless controversial message; high-tech has become the idol of our society.LOW←TECH MAGAZINE
Quick #introduction: I'm Mars (she/her).
I'm a PhD researcher for CSIRO + software engineer for the University of Tasmania, where I make software that runs on big radio telescopes. My work is used to track space debris, planetary spacecraft, asteroids, solar weather, spectral line emissions, and more!
💻___📡~~~🛰
Side hustles in #SciComm, #SwiftLang and #GameDev. Big nerd for space fiction on any medium. Wife of @parisba ❤️
#introduction, because I've never made one...
Hi, I'm Lyrilith! A 30-something goth girl from Hamburg, Germany.
💜 🦇 💜
What I tend to post and boost:
- drawings
- music I listen to (post-punk, dark wave, industrial EBM, metal, anime,...)
- memes
- cool tech stuff (I sometimes don't quite understand)
- FOSS and design
- sometimes German things (Ja, Deutsch kommt schon mal vor, aber ich tendiere irgendwie immer zu Englisch wenn ich im Netz bin.)
Hello gamers.
I'm a 3D artist from Canada. I like to make a variety of stuff, like character renders & animations.
Would love to meet some other artists on here.

because I have so many new users coming #mastodonTips #mastodon
discovery/discoverability
1) in addition to a bio, consider also making an #introduction / #introduction post also check this tag to find people who are also new and their interests
2) communitywiki.org/trunk is a wonderful place to find people who are active. it is human moderated. if you decide to stick around and have the bandwidth to do so, consider joining a list to welcome others as well.

I guess I can do a #reintroduction #introduction #introductions
Hi! I'm Andrew! I run Retro.social.
I'm an SRE manager at a gaming company. I own a coffee shop, I run a makerspace, and I make toys.
I also do a #podcast called Expedition Sasquatch that releases infrequently and is super specifically funny. Like, I can't listen to a single episode without falling out of my chair laughing, but maybe you don't know any old southern men who want to hunt bigfoot professionally.
I run a peertube instance, which mostly gets music from my record label, and tv shows from the 50s.
If you know me from outside of the fediverse it's probably from my blog (ajroach42.com) which inexplicably gets featured on boingboing or the front page of that orange nightmare every once in a while. I did podcasts on floppydisks and a piece about how computing has gone wonky since circa 2012 or so.
I do media digitization and preservation, archiving 16mm film of TV shows and movies, and I write about that sometimes.
I have a tendency to do Big Long Posts. I won't apologize for that, Your instance should crush it down under a read more. If it doesn't, I will apologize for that.
I'm a #DIYMedia advocate. I strongly believe that we have to escape from our corporate media overlords, and fight back against them if we want to be free.
Uhhh... What else? I have Strong Opinions about things.
I post about #PD #publicDomain and especially #PDMusicList recently.
Here are some photos of things I've worked on recently.
~ajroach42.com – I'm Andrew. I write about the past and future of tech, music, media, culture, art, and activism. This is my blog.

Hi everyone, I'm Paul Czege. I make roleplaying and storytelling games. Sometimes I make board games to play with my ten-year-old son. If you know any of my games it's probably My Life with Master. Though someone shared one of my checklist NPCs to Reddit a few weeks ago:
reddit.com/r/rpg/comments/t7ew…
My current primary project is Traverser, a #solarpunk #ttrpg about...
I'm Tim. I'm a geek. I love systems, networks, and software. I started a thing called DynDNS.org a long time ago. I didn't get any of Oracle's money when they bought it. But I work for Google now so I can't complain too much. All opinions are my own.
I love the Boston Red Sox even though they often don't deserve it and MLB is ... terrible in so many ways.
I'm always open to answering questions about the world I llve in and things I've done, DNS, SRE, infosec... just ask!
Hi everyone. I'm Nate, I live in New Zealand, I'm a survivor of the actual 1980s, I try not to be evil (but it's hard in today's world where evil is baked into the architecture) and I post about whatever gets into my head and finds its way back out.
Sometimes that's 80s retrocomputing, sometimes it's weird and probably unsound ideas about decentralized programming languages, sometimes it's esoteric history.
I have a blog at natecull.org
systemic consultant for organizational development and design. I think that #cooperation, #commons and #self-organization in regional contexts is the only is the only way to get out of the climate crisis.
I cooperate with different people/orgs in the area of self-organization, was part of a sustainable housing project for about 6 years (#MietshäuserSyndikat) and have quite extensive professional record in #developmentcooperation, #energy topics, #climate policy and infrastructure.
#Introduction! I'm Schlink. I've worked as a social media editor for CNN and BuzzFeed News. (I'm actually looking for a new job rn...)
Linux and Neovim user. I like to write Rust and Python from time to time. (github.com/sts10/). Interested in passwords, privacy, etc.
I read a lot of books.
I have a physical disability that I almost never talk about, but probably should!
Sometimes I play go, but I handle losing poorly (working on that!)
Been on here since '17 if you have questions!
I've been on here since 2018, but dormant for quite a while. Since we're all reintroducing ourselves, I'm an associate professor at UMass Amherst and I study media distribution and, occasionally, dysfunction in the adtech industry.
I also co-edit a book series on the civic impacts of media distribution for MIT Press, so feel free to hit me up if you're working on a relevant project.
My #introduction:
I did two years of engineering school and two years of journalism. I'm a geek who loves to tell a story.
I make #comics, #illustrations & #paintings. I do a lot of #memoir work, kids books (#kidlit), and speculative #fantasy.
I've spent about 15 years in the world of #infosec (thank you, day job!) and I do a lot of writing and podcasting in this field. I'm not an expert but I am a nerd for #tech and #privacy.
Links are all in my profile if you want to learn more. I'm not gonna spam you.
This is not my first time on Mastodon but I'm trying to consolidate a bunch of my older profiles right here.

Okay, #introduction time!
Hi! I'm Kat! I write and draw a webcomic called Magnetic North, which is basically about trying to figure out what to do with yourself after high school and very specifically how to deal with needing an adult when you *are* the adult. I also do block printing!
You kind find said comic and all my prints here linktr.ee/runbyhugging
As I've had a few new followers, by way of #introduction:
- I'm a free and open source software developer
- I contribute to #gnome, typically in the core platform libraries
- I mostly toot about my History of the GNOME project podcast (every week, on Thursday) and about my #gundam plastic models
- I try to keep my software development ranting to the bird site, but it may end up spilling over here
Hello fellow humans (+machines)!!! Here's an #Introduction
I'm not-new to Mastodon but am a new sprout in scholar.social.
I'm a Global Southerner currently writing a thesis on Indigenous Women's #History.
I consider myself a go-between. As a historian, I'm a cultural mediator in-between past/present. Plus, I'm a translator and wikimedian. I edit scientific knowledge in academia outer-space and love to tackle meanings across languages.
Here I'm engaged in knowledge sharing and other funsies.
👋Hi everyone, I'm Ashley! I like to draw characters, make some animation and comics. Nice to meet you!
Here are some of my artworks
Hello world!
