My room number for the last two nights at #FOSDEM

After this breakfast at #FOSDEM nothing can go wrong.

OK, the folks at @videolan have the best company uniform at #FOSDEM! 😄

Truly one of the best hats ever --- and you can win one by spinning that wheel and getting lucky!

Day 2 of #FOSDEM begins! Come to our stand (K level 1, group C) and learn about how @DocLiberation is giving people back control over their data 💪

Hey #Fosdem! Jason is heading to the #Github Open Social event tonight at Scott’s Bar and Kitchen— and he has a limited quantity of these #Thunderbird stickers and T-shirts to give away!

Want one? Find him between 8pm and 10pm. He’s wearing a Thunderbird hoodie.

Packed room for #fosdem talk on the ICT Sector.

Before we get to the (possible) remedy, some taking stock:

* FOSS today doesn't compete with proprietary, it facilitates it
* Labour of FOSS developers is "increasingly dictated by firms"
* FOSS contributors often have precarious employment, are among the first to be cut (apparently?)

#fosdem

But hey ... does that mean that open source has 'won'? No, says Nolan. We still have largely no control over the majority of services + platforms that facilitate much of people's daily lives #fosdem

The period 2000-present characterised as "open source is everywhere". FOSS used in 92% of all apps. People from Microsoft are among the largest contributor group to open source #fosdem

Nolan sketches the period 1970s-2000s as one in which free software advocacy gets cast as communism or anarchism. Labels that one should resist? :think_mind_blown: #Fosdem2023 #fosdem

First point of attention: politics and economics of software are (inherently? intimately?) linked #fosdem #fosdem2023

Mike Nolan speaks on winners and losers in FOSS. What open source 'won'? #Fosdem2023 #fosdem

We are at #FOSDEM in the realtime lounge in the K building. Come say hi if you are around

When it comes to owning your data, @nextcloud is asking the important questions at #Fosdem.

@hub If you browse the #FOSDEM tag here on the Fediverse, you'll see lots of photos of very crowded spaces full of people not wearing masks at all. Once in a while, you might see someone wearing a mask, but it's rare.

Same for all the video streams so far.

I've heard from people who are there that they estimate >= 95% of the crowd aren't wearing masks.

And hallways and rooms are packed full.

😟

#FOSDEM is basically admitting they're a super spreader event.

There are many science-based things conferences can do. The Public Health Pledge (@phpledge) has badging principles with suggestions on how to help prevent people getting sick (at different levels, in various ways): phpledge.com/badging — but FOSDEM isn't doing these things. They could.

(Many of us attending in-person got FOSDEM flu in years past. But now COVID is in the mix)

Hoping that everyone stays well despite this. 🍀
